Life too short for long KZfaq videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
In this episode we discuss and demonstrate the things you need to think about when putting together your first pedalboard. It’s the really basic stuff like choice of board, potential layout, fixing pedals to the board, power, cabling and so on. We try to keep it as entry-level as possible, but if you want something more involved, check out our big board build videos!

A quick thought on attaching velcro or dual lock tape on the bottom of Boss pedals. If you unscrew the base plate, you can turn it over and screw it back on with the inner surface facing out. Then you can put your velcro on without any trouble.

As an electrical engineer, I think it would be good to explain why a daisy chain power supply is not a good choice. Even if you have an amazingly clean, well-built supply, the problem occurs when the pedals are wired in parallel (daisy chained). Each pedal will generate some amount of electrical noise... some more than others. So the clean power is compromised immediately, and other pedals then get noise on their input power. Isolated just means each pedal gets a separate run that has regulation, filter caps, etc. in a star topology. Dan's absolutely right, avoid the daisy chain style. It's not a diss on any manufacturer, nor being an audio snob; it's just electrical wisdom. Cheers!

My first pedal board was the top of a school desk that I found in a dumpster, cut to the size and shape of a “replacement” SKB soft case I got for cheep. My dad jerry-rigged me some power distribution using a single Dunlop power supply I had, a piece of circuitboard he had lying around in the garage, and a bunch of wires and connectors. Essentially an over engineered and unsightly daisychain which we literally screwed to the board. I wish I had pictures of that thing, but alas, these were the days before cell phone cameras... The pedals, I believe, were a Crybaby, a Boss Mega Distortion, a Boss Bass Overdrive (cool sounds to be had with a guitar), PH3 Phaser, BF2 Flanger, and a DD5 Delay, with a QuikTune tuner which only tuned to standard tuning. I was so proud of that monstrosity...

Always found it useful to have a multimeter on hand, too. Continuity for testing cables and isolation of power supply grounds - before you start jamming ;) - and DC voltage for double checking correct voltage and polarity. Not necessarily expensive and cuts out exposing pedals to inevitable goofs.

Fulfilling what I would assume is an ever-increasing need for your audience, as you draw in more and inevitably (and brilliantly) more inexperience peddlers. One great trick is to use the pedalboard tape but DON'T take off the paper backing and glue the tape to the pedal. Instead, cut the small squares, poke a hole in the tape then use the pedal base screws through the holes. Then you don't have the glue stuck on an expensive pedal or have to worry about those rubber bottoms. Just poke a small hole, not one large enough that the scree head easily pulls through

After using modeling for ever (started out with a Behringer V-Amp and ending that with my GT-100) I finally found all these great pedal shows like yours and am now setting out to actually build a pedal board. This show is so perfect timing, I can hardly believe it just popped up in my KZfaq feed. Your show is among a small handful with the best tones and audio quality! You guys are awesome!

Here's my tip... buy a Keeley D & M drive: 1) two pedals in one 2) switch the order of the Boost & Drive sides with a flick of a switch 3) less patch cables 4) less power cables 5) smaller footprint than two standard-size pedals 6) wide-range of great sounds 7) if needed, flexible routing system using TRS cables (which kind of negates point #3 above, but if you need it it's available)

Thanks so much for this video guys. I’ve got my first few pedals together now and I’ve started to look at pedal board options. Seeing both your approaches to putting together a basic board has been really helpful. Watching huge board builds with loop switchers and midi controllers is definitely inspiring and shows the potential with guitar effects, but it was also so inspiring to see you both pull some great tones with only a few pedals at your feet.

Pedals are like an ideal gas; they expand to fit the available space. Whatever free space you think you have on your board now will disappear in fairly short order. Great video guys, wish you'd done it 15 years ago when I was building my first pedalboard.

That was fun. Been there and done that many times over the last 30 years, and still it is fun to watch you guys and see how similar my thought process is to this. Dan the Snouse sounded awesome and you have me looking at a memory man now, oh dear.. Mick i’m off to try my Tubescreamer before my Bluesbreaker for a change and now have to take another look at the foxgear As a Lefty, yes have certainly encountered the ‘right to left’ cable run issue.. these days i just use a right angle plug on the input side and loop it under the front of the pedaltrain and out the other side, i am sure there is a more expensive solution to this, but hey this works for me...

The other benefit to putting the hook side of velcro on the bottom of the pedal is that the hook side collects dust, pet hair, lint and other muck a lot more than the loop side. Having it on the bottom of the pedals keeps the board cleaner as a whole.

When you two play together it’s truly special. I found myself reaching for my guitar and playing along. If your goal was to inspire others to play more it certainly worked with me. One question. My black magic zen drive has a level and gain the seem to interact with each other differently than a normal drive pedal. For me to get the “right” sound I find the overall level being way above unity. I’ve mitigated this with a boost for when I don’t have the zen drive active. This leaves me feeling like I am tap dancing. What other ways are there to address the differences without making me adjust the levels on the pedal? Thanks for another great show.

Around the 5:20 mark I both laughed and cried when Mick mentioned his need for two overdrive pedals and a delay. This was me 3 years ago, when I picked up guitar again after many years of not playing at all. Why oh why then have I just recently needed to upgrade my pedalboard to something which now takes up half the floor space in what I laughingly refer to as my “home office”, and why do I now own 10 dirt pedals and 3 delay pedals?????!!!! It’s all because of you MIck and Dan, it’s all your fault! What have you done to me? On a serious note, some great points here. I can’t emphasise enough how much having a pedalboard, proper isolated power supplies, good cables etc. has changed my approach towards playing. As someone who only pursues guitar as a hobby, I often have limited time for playing and having everything set up ready to just power up, plug in and play has really enabled those precious moments with the instrument to be moments of creative fun, rather than repeated moments wasted setting things up and then losing interest and becoming despondent. Thank you guys, keep up the great work.
