Story time: I work in an Emergency Room, and one day a lady came in for her seizures, I remember this happened in 2020 when the pandemic had already started, so then this lady came in and was waiting in line to register, then get triaged, I was passing by the line and I remember her saying “help!” And I asked what was wrong. All I saw her was staring into nothing and slowly began to fall face first. My instinct was “she’s having a seizure” so then I quickly grabbed her from her arm and to slow down the falling process as the seizure started to get worser, her body began to loosen up more and got heavier. So, I put my forearm around the back of her neck and we both landed safely in the ground and she was saved from getting her head cracked open. Then convulsions came along till help arrived. I feel proud of myself that I least caught her mid air and she didn’t get hurt.

I got a HIV shot from a doctor and she didn’t say anything about the side affects and once she gave me the shots (15 minutes later because I panicked bc of the shot) and the shot was done. And I felt my stomach hurting and my head felt bloated idek if that was a thing. So I’m just sitting there and the doctor is like well bye I’m on break. And that was our cue to leave. Guess what? I got up and had a seizure my full body was shaking and vibrating and my eyes was going up. But I never fell but many people say they don’t remeber their seizure but I did because every part of my body was numb and I could feel my hand reaching for the doctor. My mom said I looked like a zombie to calm me down because it was my first seizure and there was this really rude nurse and she’s like “yOu cAnT hAvE wAteR lAy DoWn”. I know I needed to lay down but my throat absolutely dried up. Got home and didn’t have another one byeeeeee

If the person having a seizure has a bracelet or other identifier, check it. I have a couple of friends with epilepsy and both of them have wristbands that state to not call 911 unless they hit their head, are bleeding, or aren't breathing. In the US, an ambulance ride and trip to the ER can mean financial ruin. If somebody is used to seizures and isn't seriously hurt, just sit with them a moment and they should be fine.

Luckily I had no bad treatments during a seizure yet (get them every few years, sometimes only months). Only once a colleague apologized later for not stretching my arms and legs straight - they just didn't let him through. Most seem quite educated. And I'm so sorry for everyone who needed to witness these. Must look shocking! From my perspective I'm just suddenly dumb, a few flashes of ambulance and then I'm in some ER, not that exciting.

My cousin is also epileptic and I was taught how to care for him whenever he had an episode but he now has a monitor thing in his chest which helps control it and if metal is near it, it will mess with the monitor and isn't pretty. Had a coworker years ago who gave us a very comprehensive run down on how to help her if she had a seizure. Also put up a little sign in the breakroom with main point form notes. A couple of things she listed: "Do not put anything in my mouth, it'll choke me or break my teeth."* "When I come to, don't ask me what day it is, I regularly have trouble remembering that as it is!" "Do try to catch me. Falling hurts!" "Put something soft under my head." "Talk to me, I can hear you." *The putting something in the mouth thing is from an old belief that a seizing person would bite off their own tongue.

Thanks for mentioning that! This is an old misconception. If it's their first seizure, or it lasts longer than 5 minutes, or their 3rd seizure in a day, they need to be seen by medical. P.S. Not everyone gets an aura before a seizure. In 30 years, I've never been aware that I'm about to have a seizure. That is why I've been trying to get a service dog for the last 15 years because they are trained to sense those changes.

Apparently, One of the guys knew what it was I'm glad he was there to call out "SEIZURE SEIZURE" I was all the way in the back of the class and had to tell people to literally move out of my WAY my teacher was there told everyone to get out and move to the other class room. I stayed there with my sister until my parents and the ambulance came. And than when I come back to damn school, these rats are making fun of my sister. so, what I do is tell the principal cause I know if it was me confronting them I was gonna get in trouble and they were gonna be the ones in the hospital. I let my principal give them a long talk while I just sat there and smile like now you got a whole lecture for making fun my sister got what you deserve. I swear kids are so mean now.

I grew up with a handicapped sister that often has full-blown grand mal seizures and I was trained from a young age how to handle them. She's been hospitalized before from inhaling her own drool so the way we handled her seizures was to hold her with her head over our shoulder and let her drool run down our backs and just hold her securely until the shaking stops and we can safely lay her back down to recover. I got so in tune with her that if she started having a seizure in the middle of the night I would wake up out of a deep sleep dazed and confused with just a strange feeling that something was wrong and I needed to act and I usually caught it right as it started.

Sounds and symptoms of seizures ❤ 1. Scream 2.fall to ground 3. Vibration and foaming at mouth! 4. After a while they'll wake up and not know what happened or how to act! They'll forget how to walk and forget a lot of knowledge! Please remind them of things and tell them you are there for them! It will help and they'll most likely just need to take a nap❤ These seizures are grandmal seizures! Pedimal seizures are the blank stare ones that don't do much. I know this because I'm most likely to have them and my family has it! PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD do NOT call an ambulance!!!! They are really expensive and NOT needed! The E.R. is really busy. Seizures can be taken care of by a normal person. All you have to do is put the person on their side and keep them in a safe area when they wake up have them safely sit in a safe area and wait for their memory to come back make sure they safely get to where they need to go and then let them be or monitor them depending on how long it's been since the seizure.

Would it be similar to the feeling you get before fainting? Sometimes I can feel it coming so I try to protect/prepare myself for it until I fall. It's a bit similar to feeling of dread but also like your body is dragging down and everything going a thousand kilometers per second It's so strange!

I really appreciate this one. When I was a kid I used to have a little neighbor that suffered from seizures. I can't remember the specific type but half her body stops working and she just kind of stops where she is and does the staring off thing or she'll kind of wonder without really being lucid. I remember finding her in the road at our complex like that one time and I sort of just helped guide her back home. Her mother was the one who explained the type of seizures she would have and how they effected her and was super grateful I brought her home. She was so kind. I remember her taking time to assure me that her daughter would be fine and that I did well to bring her home in that state. She'd been at the playground and was walking home when it happened. It really stuck with me. You never know who you might be able to help through information or simply just being kind.

When he was done I would pet him and try to calm him and reassure him and then once he was not disoriented carry him to the water so he could drink if he wanted to. People with epilepsy often have "auras" or other symptoms that, over time they can identify and know it means they are about to have a seizure. For my husband, he sudden gets extremely hot, nauseous, and angry, and any and all light sources will suddenly seem extremely bright and disorienting for him. When all those happen at the same time, we know to get him laying down so he doesnt get hurt. He'll usually have a seizure within moments after he sits or lays down.

My mom always crys and apologizes profusely after she comes to, it's part of the disorientation she goes through. I was on my phone when my mom came home. I have her a hug and all of a sudden my vision came back. I woke up against the wall and my mom told me I just dropped on the floor and was out for about 10 seconds. I didn’t remember anything besides giving her a hug. I don’t know if it was because I was excited to see her or because there was a lot of blood going to my head but an incident like that hasn’t happened since so I think that be a one time thing.

Absense seizures are critical to identify as if you have more of them they can develop into worse seizure types. I had them since birth basically but they were so hard to recognize and describe. I also had gelastic and dacristic seizures (laughing/crying) seizures as well. Eventually I started losing consciousness for longer periods of time. One time I fully left my house and walked about a half mile from home barefoot before coming to, another time I was removing my nail polish and took a huge swig of nail polish remover during one. Eventually my family started to notice very odd behavior when it got worse. Usually repetitive movements like scratching or lip smacking and being unresponsive but I never got treatment for these seizures until I eventually had a grand mal. I was a moody teen so they thought I just wasn't paying attention. Now I have so many different seizure types from being unmedicated for so many years it's very hard to treat. Look up videos of people with absence seizures to know the signs. It is extremely hard for the person experiencing them to explain what they are feeling. I thought everyone felt that way.

Omg that's absolutely horrible, im so sorry!! Ive also had absense seizures since birth, and it took st least 10 years before I got diagnosed cuz everyone also thought it was just me being a weird kid, and ignored it. We only went to the doctor when I started talking about how I noticed having these weird moments where I was losing time, which also was a sign of it getting worse from the long time going untreated. But compared to ur scenario, I now feel a lot more grateful that they listened to me and got me treated. I hope things eventually get easier, with how fast things are developing nowadays, who knows what treatments will be available in the future 😊

In my opinion, myoclonic seizures are the worst because you remain conscious and retain your memory while you are simultaneously not able to control your limbs. And then being told by your doctor that it is probably your diet until you have a full grand mal seizure in the middle of the night in front of your mom and scaring her half to death (figuratively) and then waiting for six hours for the neurologist to arrive to the hospital to diagnose you with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy. 🙃

EPILEPSY ISNT A JOKE. not only can it kill us in a plit second and there's nothing we can do to stop it but also if we dont die we will wake up from the seizure WISHING we did die because of the horrible side effects.
