After having both my childrens being seen more or less immediately in the er, once with like half of medical staff at once in the room, I'm happy to wait my turn. Me being treated later means someone else is having a worse day than I am, and I do not want to trade places.

Or sadly they just plain forgot. That is the worst thing to happen. I was in the ER having a acute appendicitis. Went in at 530am. Didn't get operated on until 7pm. Was behind a emergency C section. But apparently I was forgotten about because my brother asked a doctor for an update on how much longer and when he did and they clarified them my room, he told me their faces went pale and asked him in a worried voice "he's still there?" My brother went yep. Shortly after that I was brought in to get operated on. Shit happens. But man please dont tell me after the fact that "we got it just in time" (before it explodes) when you forgot about the patient. I found out later in recovery that they forgot about me.

Right? I encountered a Karen who went to the ER with a HEAD COLD, on a Money of all days, and expected to be seen before everyone else because she was pregnant. And there I was in unimaginable pain with what I didn't know yet was a burst ovarian cyst, patiently waiting my several hours for a bed. How rude of me to be before her.

My sister briefly worked in the ER(now shes in post surgery recovery) and she always tells me that you do not want to be the person that gets rushed to the back when you first get to the ER. If you are it's because you are dying. Be grateful the health care professional who assessed you says you can wait.
@oliverr6925 Жыл бұрын
take note that the health care professional can be wrong. it is not always a virtue that you're not being rushed back, but a death sentence. look up Allison Holthoff, or at some of the other comments in this thread.

My husband went to the ER a week after major surgery with a high fever. They came in and took some blood and a little bit later about 8 people literally RAN into his room and started working furiously. Turns out he had sepsis and was within hours of dying if he hadn't been brought in. NO waiting on that trip! That was a fast ER trip! They transported him by ambulance to the ER where he sat in a hallway for 6 and 1/2 hours till they did a shift change and there was a woman who asked my father why he was there and if he was okay (he looked pale) she checked his oxygen levels after him telling her what happened and why he was there... she immediately got upset with her staff and got him into a room as quickly as possible. (I've been visually impaired since birth basically and have had routine eye tests, an eye surgery when I was 8 and many appointments and stuff when I was younger bc I had a wonky eye so had we been living in America the amount we'd have to pay in medical bills would be astronomical) It's a slap in the fucking face for them

My stepfather once was complaining of intense leg pain 3 days after a surgery on his nose. Like could barely walk on it, when my niece accidentally hit his leg with a very soft and light stuffed animal, the noise he made scared the crap out of her. (Literally she was still in diapers at the time :P) He tried toughing it out until my mom made him go to the hospital, he bitched the entire way there and the place was packed. He just wanted to go home and not wait for hours. They were brought in immediately. My mother didn't have the heart to tell him that when you go into a packed emergency room and get taken back within 5 minutes of signing in, its because your life is in immediate danger. That kind heartedness ended the moment he was discharged and mom laid into him HARD about how the blood clot in his leg could have literally killed him had it moved towards his heart and to not question her when she says he needs to go to the er. She worked as an intake specialist, getting the patients information etc. She'd seen so many real emergencies and non emergencies... ever since we defer to her judgement when we think we need to but don't want to go and spend all day.

My ex husband, an er dr, died because he didn’t get to the er fast enough! He was always prone to nosebleeds, not a big problem, but this time he was on blood thinners and so the bleeding wouldn’t stop. He bled out before he made it to the hospital. @Yoakleoakle The problem isn’t that people are uninsured (doctors and nurses get paid either way) but because they have no where else to go people come to ER with non life threatening problems that could be handled at a normal doctor’s office. The ER that I worked at (as a janitor) was constantly understaffed and overworked even with just the life threatening emergencies. I understand what he said sounded harsh and I understand that people can’t always pay for a normal doctor, but please know that the health care workers (or at least the ones I worked with) want to help everyone but the care for patients who are in critical care take up large amounts of people and supplies. This means that there may be only one nurse to care for 5-10+ non emergency patients by themselves while the others are trying to save someone who has been stabbed multiple times making it incredibly stressful for everyone involved including the patients who have to wait hours just to see a nurse. I hope this helps 🙂

I guess? Actively dying could be translated to "in a state where homeostasis is being directly disrupted and death is imminent" So if you want to make the statement of "inactively dying" then sure... I guess you could say that it is the standard state of less imminent casualties because everyone eventually loses homeostasis at different rates depending on the scenario. It goes into triage at that stage, which was the point of the statement in the first place. Let's say you have three patients. A stubbed toe, a guy with an evisceration, and a cardiac arrest. While the man with the evisceration is likely "dying" he isn't dying as fast as the already dead guy. Obviously stubbed toe guy is your last priority. @@kr7.00 I guess now I'm feeling brave enough to share my embarrassing ER story. Years ago here in Canada, I had a pilonidal cyst which is a cyst that grows near your tailbone basically in the crack of your bum and it abcessed so I was out new years eve celebrating and by that point it was large enough that it affected how I was walking. Fast forward another day and I end up going to the ER around 9 or 10 pm on January 1st with my mom. After waiting for some 5 hours in the waiting room (I couldn't even sit for obvious reasons so I had to stand), I go inside, wait another hour or so and then they tell me there's no anesthesiologist and its like 3-4 am. So they get a bunch of deer in the headlights looking residency students to use me as a guinea pig. The best they could do for me was local freezing to numb the pain. They proceeded to stab me near the tail bone 3 or 4 times with these giant needles. At this point, I was screaming at the top of my lungs, it literally felt like I was shanked 4 times. Worst pain of my life. And since the abcess is 3 dimensional and pushing out from all sides, the 'anesthetic' didn't do anything except for the skin. So they cut a little slit and then start trying to push the puss out of this golf ball sized and imagine a pimple that size and a grown man pushing his thumbs down on to it with his entire body weight, the pain was horrific. These clowns had no idea what they were doing and the more I screamed in agony, the less sure they seemed of anything. At one point they just gave up trying to reassure me and calm me down as far as the pain went and just said aite fuck it. Anyway, they patch me up with a bit of gauze and hightail it the fuck outta there. My mom said she could hear me screaming through 2 sets of doors waiting outside of the patient area of the hospital wing. Then for the next week, I had to have a nurse come everyday to fill this hole with gauze and you can imagine how it feels getting cloth shoved into an open wound but all in all it wasn't that bad considering this time around, I had painkillers unlike at the ER. My first nurse was this super nice African lady, she guided me through the whole thing. My second nurse was this gigantic Iranian wrestler with huge cauliflower ears, he looked like a bodybuilder. I was expecting to have to hide my reactions to the pain but he was really understanding too 😂 What a life eh?

Mind you I sort of understood cause there was already 4 ambulances there, but it not like I asked to be there ya know. . . at least 6-8 nurses got to have fun trying to find my vein and getting to use a special machine to help.

Wow a nurse asked the suicidal kid to just go home. If you would got home and killed yourself that would’ve been fucking awful. I was raped as a baby so I’m pretty Messed up... I won’t even go to the hospital anymore because they are just terrible. I’d rather die at home. One nurse said to just get it right and stop bothering them...

Amen. I work at a hospital and was in our ER once because my colleagues dragged me in with a suspicion of a stroke or something similar. I’ve been there for almost 10 hours altogether. Turned out I was not dying lol. I was ashamed to be there and wasting their time and also grateful that they checked if my symptoms could mean anything dangerous. If you’re in an ER and your symptoms are not life threatening, shut up and just wait.

I've been to the er twice this year, and both times I've been perfectly fine with waiting! Mainly because I knew I wasn't on deaths door, and because I have a lot of family members who are nurses, and I know they have enough to deal with! The longer you wait, the luckier you are! It's when you get rushed back that you should worry!

Had to go to the ER once last year a few days before Christmas. It was because we had seen my doctor for suspicions about diabetes. My blood sugar was around 800-900 I can’t remember. Either way they were surprised I wasn’t in a coma.

That happened to my brother he had gone to our regular doctor cause he hadn’t been feeling well and they took his blood sugar and told him to get to the hospital as fast as possible because his blood sugar was like 600-700

I don’t know if anyone else from England is here but our idea of a long wait in the ER (accident and emergency to us) is VASTLY different to the US. Generally people wait upwards of three hours to be seen. The a and e I was at last month had an estimated wait of twelve hours for new patients 😱

Been to the ER soooo many times because my kid's system likes making even tiny respiratory illnesses croupy - even at almost 8 - and she needs to breathe. Be kind to your ER people!!!

I have to go to the ER even when it’s not an “emergency” because I live in America and have no insurance

You are not the only one. There are hundreds of thousands of people without insurance who have no choice but to use the ER as a GP. Don't feel bad. It's difficult in this country right now. People don't know it but lots of people are having huge problems getting bry right now. I hope you get insurance soon. ❤️

There are about 30 million other Americans who do the same. It's an interesting phenomenon to study actually. Just those 30 million uninsured Americans cost taxpayers more than it would to implement a single payer system.
