Rewatching your video Grace. I'm going to do one for my mother and I'm planning on doing a tutorial. The first time I heard of this was on this video a long time ago, I think she is ready for this now. I'm from Spain and I don't think that these twiddle muff are very well known here. Thank you again! Happy New year 2023! 🤗💕

I'm so glad I came across this. The woman who was like a second mother to me growing up has dementia. She made so many things for me over the years from Barbie clothes to baby clothes for my kids, and I'm going to make a Twiddle Muff for her. I haven't seen her in almost 3 years now, but the last time I saw her she was pretty bad. She has 2 sons, so she doesn't have a daughter to help her out. She lives in her house alone and her sons don't live less than an hour away. I'm 4 1/2 hours away, but now I have something that I can do for her. Thank you so very much!

Oh how wonderful!! I really hope it helps her. That is so sweet of your to do - I really think she will love it. Most enjoy playing with the different things on the Twiddle Muff. I've had several ask me to do a tutorial on how to make one, so I plan on doing a full tutorial before long. You've probably crocheted and knitted enough to know how to make a tube and then just put different items on it. Have fun with it - it really is fun to make them!! You are so welcome!! 💖

Thank you Randi - it was really sad. Isaac sent me a text at 11:30 pm letting me know his mom was gone, with crying faces - I didn't sleep much that night. He is such a good kid - I think of him as a grandson. I hope a twiddle muff would help your grandmother out - I might try a twiddle blanket too, but I think I like the twiddle muffs the best, as they can even wear it on one arm and twiddle with the things, or lay it in their lap. I know it's hard watching your loved one suffer

@@gbmaltese We're all still learning! I've seen similar "fidget blankets" that people sewed rather than crocheted, which contain buttons, ties, fabric of different texture, etc., for the same purpose. Anything like that helps with the nervous energy and high stress of dementia. No matter what skills we have, we can make something like this. Best wishes.

This is such a wonderful video! I'd like to make some one day for one of our local nursing homes. We have two here, a fancy one for wealthy people, and a government one for everyone else. So I'd probably take it to the not so fancy one. Since they probably have a bigger need for items like that.

Thank you Ella!!! I hope you are able to make some!!! I know that the one I take mine too is always so excited to receive the twiddle muffs. I asked if they take donations of shawls, lapghans and other things also, and they said they do. There are so many residents in there that have no one come and visit them, and this makes me so sad. And you are right, the government one could definitely use anything that you make!!

This is a great tutorial! I'm doing this as an idea for a University assignment for community engagement, getting the community together to make muffs for aged care facilities in the local community. You mentioned about the dangers of how buttons can still always be pulled off by people, I'd provide them to the facility with advice that they should be used under supervision, as I am sure they would anyway during activity time 😊

That's a great idea!! I would love to see more and more nursing homes be able to share these with their patients. I use braided fishing line to sew my beads on - it's really tough to break that stuff! I'm pretty sure they supervise them during activity time too 😊💖

Yes, autistic children like the stimulus of texture though I'm not sure about the sound of the crinkle paper. If the crinkle paper were done like a pompom (cat toy) and attached so they could touch it, the sound might be fine. I wouldn't use the metal ring for a child, but you could sew/crochet the curly caterpillars right into the inside and outside of the muff. You could use the cute octopi as toys. if you did the muff from fabric or quilting, you could use sewn Velcro to have lots of soft things to attach/remove but a crochet muff is just too much yarn for Velcro! Another texture/feel is stretchy. You can attach or make the curly caterpillars with an elastic or stretchy yarn and either attach it so they can pull but it bounces back or attach it closely so they can get a more rubbery tug without the big bounce back. Just so long as nothing can fall/break off and into mouths! I noticed plastic eyes on the octopi and wondered, but figure they are safety eyes. God Bless you.💟

These can also be made as flat mats if they don't want to put their hands inside a muff. I taught school for 34 years, and I wish I had known about these before. I've been retired for 2 years now, and I had some kids who were very anxious - I think these might have been good for them to fiddle with when feeling uptight. Good luck on trying it!! You are very welcome - I hope it will help!! -Grace

A fun tip I use is to thread beads on the yarn before you start and slide one up the yarn when you yarn over every once in awhile. I'm making some of these for neurology patients in the hospital. Mainly because my husband is a nurse on that floor and I have an insider. He actually asked me to crochet some because his patients often are confused and pull out their IVs. Then sometimes they have to be restrained because they really need the IVs and that's no fun for anyone.
@gbmaltese
@gbmaltese 4 жыл бұрын
I have done it that way also - so many ways to crochet!! I have started using braided fishing line now to attach the beads - I feel like this will be safer in keeping the beads from falling off. I think that's fantastic what you are doing!! I live in a small town, so we have a very small hospital, but it might help with people with IVs!! Do you make your Twiddle Muffs large like this one, or do you make yours more of a wrist size, where it can be worn on one arm? I love to hear how other people incorporate their Twiddle Muffs!!

I have never seen anyone make a video with a pattern as yet. Here is a link to a kindle book I purchased a few years ago, but have never used it: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BB359BR/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 If you don't want to crochet a tube, you can also crochet a recatangle and sew the longer sides together to make a tube. I just use whatever stitches I feel like making and add different types of things that can be fiddled with. I have an outer and inner tube so that the things I add to the outside won't scratch anyone's hands where it was attached on the inside (I hope this makes sense).
