The main issue I had to work through with economy picking was keeping the note rhythm even crossing strings. Usually the consecutive stroke would be played too soon. Now economy picking is my default method. Do you do a slight amount of pick slanting when moving to adjacent strings? One mental thing that tripped me up was emphasizing the wrong note which was clunking up my economy picking. For example: for a group of 9 consecutive 16th notes in 4/4 with 3 on B string, 3 on G and 3 on D. If i play in groups of 3, emphasizing the 1st, 4th and 7th notes it would not be smooth. If i instead emphasize the notes properly on the downbeats it was perfect. A lot of times with phrases you economy pick there are an odd number of notes per string. What's your v-pick of choice? I've been using small lite pointy for years. Love them

I have the same issue. I'm an strict alternate picker. I'm trying to learn economy to help get through really fast passages (typically Petrucci kinda 16th note triplets (or sextuplets) 140bpm which is insane for me). But I'm have this rhythm problem when crossing, the consecutive stroke goes too fast and I get a weird shuffle feel. I cannot use your mental exercise as the passage is in triplets, so the emphasis is on every 3 beats. Do you have a good advice on that? Or a youtube video the atacks this issue? Thanks...

@@igordbc I would recommend experimenting with putting a little more pressure on the first string with the pick leading into the second. This will delay the pick moving off of the string just slightly. Eventually you'll find the right amount of pressure to keep it even. You can try this in combination with pick slanting. If you slant too much toward the next string, the pick will come off the first string faster. This is what I experimented with and it has worked out so far. There may be a good video out there explaining and maybe David can give some advice! As always start slow until it's fluid and then increase the tempo

The whole economy/alternate picking choices has become automatic for me. In general, pick in the direction of the string (i.e. economy pick) when you can. When you can't, inside alternate pick. Outside alternate pick wide string skips and line patterns where only the lowest note of the line is played on one string as in C-D-E-F-E-D-C. Heck, use legato and hybrid plucks with 2 and 3.

This is a good lesson. It's always surprising that no matter how good you get, new picking patterns are always awkward. I was learning the solo for Black Betty the other day, and it's easy but it's sixteenth notes at 120bpm, and has a lot of 4th intervals. So it's just different than the typical blues based patterns that are so common. It's easy to play slow, but at full speed I kept getting hung up. I had to keep trying different picking patterns until I found one that worked. I always end up using economy picking, because I don't have a choice at anything over about sixteenth notes at 100bpm. But even with economy picking, I still have to make some picking choices. I've been trying to get to the point where I can alternate pick anything. That has the advantage of never having to make a picking choice. But I like to down pick on downbeats, because it helps me keep better time. So lately I've been trying to get in the habit of ghost picking hammer ons and pulls offs. Otherwise you end up flip flopping your your downbeats and back beats.. Basically, what I'm saying is, it's always nice to see someone else struggling with picking. I always feel like I waste so much time on it. But it took me a long time to realize the your picking hand is the hard part of becoming a great guitar player. We all spend so much time on our fretting hand in our early guitar career, that it can come as a shock when you one day realize it's your picking hand that is holding you back.

Great lesson! I haven't been watching some of the simplest thing that can speed me up like just starting with the correct direction on my first note. Im using the A minor 7 and by just picking up on the first note I've picked up speed!

Do you ever use a metronome to practice? I've been told it's a useful way to help resist the temptation to speed up too soon.

hey David great lesson !! i find it more difficult to do it Descending From thick string to thin strings then Ascending... Do you have any tips for that ?

Check the angle of your pick. Angle up ever so slightly to go from thin to thick strings and down slightly to go from thick to thin especially with consecutive sweeps.

I'd focus on how much pick is catching the string and try to make it as shallow as possible. Having a pointy pick helps a lot, try to get it so that just the very tip is plucking the string. Also, the thing that helped me a LOT when learning sweep picking technique in general is 'pick planting': kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bbCDdtB6p-DFkok.html absolutely transformed my playing overnight. Thanks to Rick Graham for that little gem.
