Great video and great point! makes so much sense. I came up with this idea a couple of days ago when I was practicing soothsayer triplets. I narrowed it down to the core exercise that is basically 1 lick. first finger on high e say 5th fret, then ur pinky and ring finger on 8 7 on b string. and you grind the shit out of it by starting with up stroke and down stroke on ur 1st finger with alternate picking. After that my pinky and ring finger coordination AND my ability to move between strings with alternate picking skyrocketed within 20 min. of practicing. hope it makes sense;) Hope one day I become as fluent at guitar as you are

Dude you need to check Rick Graham out. He will show you economy picking does exist. Used in very advanced licks which can allow you to play these notes extremely fast and efficient.

I used to do economy picking naturally and was really good at it until a friend told me I need to do alternate picking only or I will be hurting my playing in the future. so, trying to learn alternate only, I ruined my technique. I hate alternate picking.

Great lesson and excercise. But - i am sorry, part of it is going right over my head. When you demonstrate the 2 down stoke/2 up stroke on the E and B strings, I am with you. Once you 'add the notes' you loose me because there is only one stroke per sting yet I hear 2 notes per string. I slowed down the video, i see your picking hand doing what it supposed too but i cant see where the other notes fit in. Am I crazy? Everyone else here seems to get it lol

I had the same problem. So I slowed it right down to half speed. Start with up stroke on E string at 10th fret (third finger). Sweep up to B string at 8th fret(first finger). Then place third finger on B string at 10th fret . Pick with down stroke and sweep to E string with index finger at 8th fret. repeat 10 million times.. as Clause would say..Hah hah

When I read the title I thought this woukd be totally wrong... But you are right. Even economy picking is so natural, nobody needs to teach you. It's strict alternate picking that is unnatural while surely people mastering it will have benefits in some scenarios. These people then do sweep picking as a totally different thing to strict alternate. Everything I do is economy picking... except the first stroke, that usually will be down. But no matter is up or down, the next one and forward will be under economy picking rules (well, there is only one rule).

Well, I call it economy picking, and I love it. But it has a negative side effect. If you play in pentatonic, you will need to fall back to alternate picking which feels uncomfortable then, therefore: even if you do econony picking, you need to practice alternate picking. Otherwise you will try to avoid alternate picking and that will be a limitation of your sound.

If you play a 2 note per string pentatonic, economy picking and alternate picking can be the same thing as there are never two consecutive up or downstrokes. I don't see the issue. The only way in which they can be different if you decide to do the outside rather than inside version of alternate picking where you string hop every time you switch strings.

@@steveozone4910 Yes Gambale plays sweeping pentatonics 3 notes on one string and 1 note on the next - repeat. I'm 99% alternate picking myself because I could never get the rhythm/timing right when sweeping. I'll have to give it another go.

Sorry, but you play exactly the same. There is only one rule in economy picking: your stroke is in the direction from the current pick position to the string you are going to pick. Always. And that has nothing to do what notes are you playing or even if they are computer random generated notes. Note thay when you play on one string up and down it's still economy picking (of course someone that plays strict alternate will go also up and down on one string).

I think economy should be understood as "not strict alternate picking". You can either stick to the rythmic up/down or you go for efficiency.

If they are all the same thing, how come I can pick scale lines fast and really smoothly. But when I want to play an arpeggio with sweep picking, I cannot do it? Because they are different techniques. Learning one doesn't give you the ability to do the other. Hence, we need different terms for them. You seem to be confused about your own guitar playing.

With sweeping the problem is the left hand, the right hand would not take time to get ready if you anyway economy pick well. The problem is muting/rolling/position shifting etc the left hand techniques that come in the way when you do 1 note per string stuff

You said it yourself-- sweep picking is nothing more than moving from one string to another with two consecutive down strokes or two consecutive up strokes. Therefore, sweep picking DOES exist. Sweep picking, economy picking and directional picking are simply names for the very same thing-- they are synonymous. And they do, in fact, exist. Having said this, I think you're a brilliant player and teacher. Keep up the good work...

They cannot be the same because you can be really good at playing scales but really bad at playing arpeggios. This means you are using different techniques to play them. And that means you need to practice each in isolation. And that justifies labeling them with different names. Because if you all throw them together, things get confusing because you will be using the same term for two different things.

@@stevedrake360 No, not really. Because scales you play with 3 notes per string. Arpeggios with 1 or 2. Alternate picking arpeggios doesn't make sense. Sweep picking is really very very different from economy or alternate picking. So much so that you can absolutely not pick more than 1 note per string. Which means you have to hammer on or pull off the second note in certain arpeggios.

@@Prometheus4096 Not all scales are played with 3 notes per string. Many positions are 2 notes per string, including the minor and major pentatonic scales in the first position. Even one of the major scale positions is 2 notes per string on the low E and B strings. I agree with you that it doesn't make sense to play arpeggios with alternate picking. But sweep picking is a form of economy picking.

1 pick stroke per string = sweep picking >1 pick stroke per string = economy picking The main source of confusion is people that started using term "2 string sweep" to make themselves sound clever/different, even though it was just an "economy picking" move.

The title is wrong.. must be "there is not such thing as sweep picking", because sweep picking is just economy picking. That is what he explains in the video.
