A short episode to demonstrate bowl lathering. This was made in response to some conversation I've had recently with a viewer. I hope this helps because sometimes showing is better than typing when it comes to these sorts of things. If anyone wants to see anything else that they are curious about, contact me and I'll be happy to help.

I have really improved my bowl lathering, I used to use 1/2 tsp of shave soap for a 3-pass shave. Now I use 5/32 tsp for the same 3-pass shave. It helps that I use the Supply Marble Lathering Bowl which is a lathering machine. After I whip up the lather I continue to work it on my face to increase the volume. I use Highland Springs "Havana Vieja" and I am extremely pleased with the results. Excellent glide and post-shave feel.

I prefer bowl lathering. Then, really working the lather into the whiskers and skin. It seems that the time spent working the good ingredients we're paying for into the skin, instead of rushing through a lathering, gives me the best result. Also enjoy smelling a terrific soap too! BTW, I watched how much water I typically added to my soaps, and found half an ounce was about right each time. Now, I use a cool little shot glass half filled to add as I mix. Seems to work for me consistently. Great work as always Rudd. Please keep 'em coming!

Your idea for consistent water addition through the use of pre-measurement is ingenuous! Thanks for taking the time to share. I am glad the video was helpful for you and that you've found your preference and a good routine that works for you.

I usually scrape out a pea-sized amount of un-bloomed soap, spread it through the bottom of a barely textured plastic salsa bowl and start the lathering process with a barely damp synthetic brush (a 26mm or larger knot is best). With some soaps it may be pasty at first, but throughout the process periodically extract any lather that accumulates within the knot, spread it through the bottom of the bowl, add a little water, then re-work it until it either needs extracted and re-worked again (with additional water) or has accumulated into a volume (and thickness) of lather suitable for your needs. This process also works with flakes of triple milled shaving soap. At some point I may get an additional cheap, plastic salsa bowl and work a cheap shaving cream (like Derby, which is very easy to lather), but briefly microwave this lather and apply it to my beard to soften it for an easier shave. It's hardly the thorough beard prep one receives when visiting Farzad's Barber Shop in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, but it's a bit easier. He initially applies warm, moisturizing cream, multiple hot towels and a warm lather from a machine, before applying a lather he creates in a bowl. Search out 'Full Shave Tutorial by Farzad at Farzad's Barber Shop'. The barbers at 'Schorem Haarsnijder en Barbier' (aka 'The Scumbag Barbers of Rotterdam') are big fans of him and use his videos when training new barbers.

Don't you kinda feel like it's an extra step? I tried bowl lathering when I first started and I got really tired of loading the brush from the soap from it's own bowl, working lather from another bowl, then applying to my face. I felt like I also got better results because I was able to feel the lather develop on my face which I really don't get in a bowl. Good demonstration on how things should be done though. When I first started, knowing how much water to add was really a problem.
@dendj55
@dendj55 8 жыл бұрын
+Remington Lewis Yes, I feel like bowl lathering is an extra step and there is really no benefit for doing it. That said, I respect the folks who so and hence why I wanted to show how I would bowl lather, should that be my only option.

Iv heard that a lot about water to quick. I have never had an issue dumping water in.. If that was the case then Marco method would make. Tacky glue 😂😂😂 some things just don't make sense and people go with it... That or u added to much water..although.. If u do a lot of water u my need to lather for a while to get it all broke in.. But I have never had an issue
