One of the questions we get asked the most is "what should I start with when raising pigs"? Today we talk about the options you have when deciding to start with Kunekune pigs. The biggest thing we ask people is "what are your goals". This will help determine how many and whether to get males, females, or barrows. Most people say they want a breeding pair but that can be a mistake. Follow along today to see what we recommend when you decide to start with pigs!

We welcomed 2 kunekune gilts to our little homestead, half-sisters, and they are such a joy! The girls will help me turnover soil for a garden and be our little pasture pets (🤞🏻really hoping they'll help clear some low brush for us too). Eventually, one day, I would like to breed them but they're 7&8mo old so not anytime soon.

We got a couple of unregistered females from a neighbor. looking to get at least one boar and a barrow sometime in the future. The females are going on 4 months (Feb) old so we've got a little time. However, you've given me something to think about with regards to possibly getting two boars. Thanks for everything you do. Your channel is VERY informative and entertaining! 💜

There’s two channels I watch that they both have a breeding pair that won’t breed. Keeping it Dutch, and Sow the Land. There’s something about the Kunekune’s that when they’re living with an opposite sex roommate they don’t notice when the female goes into heat. I’ve seen this several times over in real life and online. Great tip video. I think 2 males and two females would be a fantastic start for us personally.

Thanks for sharing lessons you’ve learned. We’ve added some KuneKunes, Oberhasli dairy goats (highly recommend), and a few turkeys since we started watching your videos. (We already had chickens.) Thanks again!

We added 2 young does and 1 doe in Milk. This helped us get started as she was already trained to the stanchion, and we knew her milk production ability (about a gallon/day at peak). Also, I would recommend sampling the does milk before buying. (Or at least the breeds milk) We added a buck this past fall so we will hopefully have spring kids from all the does, Lord willing. We are hoping to try making our own cheddar cheese. It’s all an experiment, but we’re having fun. Thanks for the inspiration!

We really like them. They are quiet, docile, good milk producers, and were easily trained to our electric fence, and respect it (even when we lost power for a few days). Even the buck in rut was docile, smelly but docile. :)

Great added content. We watched your other videos on 6 Tips when getting KuneKune pigs. We got 4 shortly afterwards (2 gilts and 2 boars). They were only about 6 weeks though. I thought it was a bit early for them to be weaned, but they adjusted just fine. You covered how early the gilts can be bred. How early can the boars breed? We didn't really have things planned out. We are learning and making adjustments as we go. It all seems to be working out so far and I am starting to plan things better now. We also have Nigerian Dwarf goats and bred 3 of the does. We will be expecting our first farm babies the end of February. I have learned a lot from watching your videos. There aren't many out there that are in depth about KuneKune pigs. There's a ton about dairy goats. Keep up the good work.

I was also wondering..... How do you keep the pigs from eating the chicken feed when housed together?
@KCFarms
@KCFarms Жыл бұрын
Thanks for following along! Boars will breed early as well just depends on if they can mount the females. When we have pigs and chickens together we put the chicken feed in the coops

@KC Farms Thank you for your response. Can boars breed if their testicles haven't dropped? With putting the feeders in the coop, the pigs don't try to climb the ramp? We currently have an A-frame coop, and the pigs and goats can fit through the door. We have our dual-purpose Barred Rocks, and they free-range our property. I am thinking about building some portable coops similar to what you have and getting meat birds to keep with the pigs and goats.

Good advice. We intended to start with 4 but ended up with 6 (pig math is real, folks!). We're expecting our first litter the beginning of March! Did you settle on a name yet for Cindy? 😂

It’s very similar to chicken math. We are going over the names but haven’t decided yet on “Cindy” 😂

How about getting 2-3 female pigs and taking them to a stud boar, if you wanted to breed? I just wondered if that would be an option? Thanks

@KCFarms Жыл бұрын
You could do that if you could find a farm for that. Most people don’t do that due to bio-security and other safety reasons
