Tire Inflator and Chuck Repair

Fixing a leaking air chuck on a tire inflator and looking at how this ingenious device works.
This is an old dual foot chuck tire inflator, but the same fix works on ball end style chucks as well. Over time, the rubber sealing grommets inside these tire chucks wears out. Luckily, it's easy to replace these grommets and restore them to like new condition. Sure, they can be discarded and replaced. But what's better than preventing adding something to a landfill by using another thing that was also destined for a landfill to repair the first thing by repurposing the second thing?
With the single ended ball foot checks, you can often get by with flipping the existing grommet over to make use of the less worn inside face. However, if the rubber is worn too far, cracked or torn, replacement is the best option. Sure you can replace the whole chuck, but that requires either a trip to the hardware store for a new part plus the time to remove it from the air hose or quick connect and then clean up seal the threads and reinstall the new part and then check for leaks.

The Milton replacement washers (Milton 500-6 Dual Head Air Chuck Washers) seem to work for just about any common chuck or air gauge. There are two types of washers that are used for the common Schrader valves - one type that presents a flat surface to the valve and one that is .25" that surrounds the air valve. The flat washer type takes a lot of pressure by hand to make a seal while the second type of .25" makes a great seal and takes less pressure by hand to use. Common thread for air valves is (external thread) .302 inch x 32 threads per inch.

Good information on the replacement part number. I figured there must be something like that available, but the washers I had on hand seemed to do the job.

I took one apart a while back and it must have had a spring in it. Shit went everywhere. I air up truck tires and I like a chuck that will grip the stem and not leak much so I can gauge the other tires while it airs up. New chucks don't work well after 3 months or so. I work at a landfill so I air up 2 or 3 tires a day.

Mine had the double head, like yours. After MANY years, it started leaking while filling. I almost just went and bought a new one from Oreilly's for $7 dollars, but then realized I might be able to just SWITCH the two rubber washers. I never use the one on the inside, so it was cheap and almost TOO easy!!! Thanks for taking the time to show there ARE other options to tossing!!

Thanks for the video... I had the fittings come out and I didn't know how to assemble it back. Thanks to your video I was able to piece it together and save some money. Also, well demonstrated and explained.. I have a good understanding how the fitting works..thanks

I have a Merline, Quality Harbor Freight unit like Milton's, similar to what you show except that the pressure gauge is in line and just above the lever value. It sometimes leaks thru the back part of the valve. You' given me all the information I need to fix it. Great video and Thank You! 🤠🤠🤓

Yes, I always try to hang onto parts like this that look like they may be useful in the future. It is so satisfying when you finally stumble upon the repair that needs those parts that have been stashed away for years. It's even nicer that these rubber washers originally were causing a problem in a product we were making for sale. By removing the washers we made our product work better and then to find out they are handy for repairs is a bonus.

Good video, thanks. A friend who used to own a tire shop tells me the tire people have air chucks that can inflate tires with the core out. I have not seen one. But I found an air blow gun even with just the metal tip will do a bang up job of getting the air in to seat tires.
@The4Crawler
@The4Crawler 3 жыл бұрын
I think all you need to do is take a closed type ball foot chuck and simply remove the pin inside, leaving the rubber grommet in place. Then that will work w/o a valve core in place. I think I'll set up a 2nd ball foot chuck like that and keep in my bag of air fittings I keep in my truck. Good tip with the blow gun, I think I have one with the screw-in rubber tip.

Bought a few new Milton style sir chucks (not real Milton) for my motorcycles. Added a 1/4npt 45 degree street elbows to clear the brake rotors. When I tried them air wouldn't go into the tire. I found the center pins in the new chucks are shorter and press the valve core enough. Works a little if I push very hard. Tried the new rubber seal in an old leaky chuck but it didn't fit. Too thick. Those seals look like faucet washers but are a softer rubber.

@The4Crawler Жыл бұрын
Yes, Schrader valves and chucks are a bit finicky. They look to be all the same, but there are minor differences, like you found with the center pin, that make one type of chuck not work with a specific valve.

But if you open up that euro end, it uses a different size (and white) washer. I'm having trouble finding the right size to get my inflator chuck to stop leaking.

I've never looked for repair parts for that style chuck as I've not had any issues with the one I use. You might try flipping that washer over. I've had good luck with that trick extending the life of other tire vale chucks. Or, if it's a threaded chuck, it should be possible to replace. We have 1/4" NPT female threaded chucks available.

I HAVE tools - having worked in gas and vacuum systems servicing. Just need to know - is there a fix for my valve stems to seal against the pump nozzle? Could I simply put a rubber gasket around the stem threads to effect a seal?
@The4Crawler
@The4Crawler Жыл бұрын
Easy fix is to just remove the rubber washer inside the pump chuck and reverse it. This will work as long as that rubber washer isn't too worn or hasn't already been flipped. What happens is the valve stem end wears into the face of the washer and at some point, it won't seal anymore. If it's too far gone, then replace that rubber washer like I did in this video. We do have replacement washers if you can't find any locally.

Hello sir! Excuse me, where can i find solenoid valve for Breville barista express online? I live in sweden! Thank you.
@The4Crawler
@The4Crawler 3 жыл бұрын
Likely you need the 220V solenoids. Depends on what exactly you need. If just the black electrical coil, then there are lots of Olab brand solenoids on eBay. All the coils are interchangeable. If you need the valve itself, see if you can get the p/n off the valve body and try to find that. If you can't find a 220V version, get another voltage and then just swap coils. You can also try searching for the Breville p/n and see what turns up. eReplacementparts.com has the part diagrams, but all their listings show parts on back order as do many of the other parts suppliers on-line. Apparently there is some sort of bug going around making everybody stay home and not do their jobs :)

Yes, I imagine if you could find one the right size. The old hardware store I used to go to had parts like that in a big rack of drawers, so you could go down the sizes until you found just what you needed. Unfortunately, they closed up shop about 7 years ago. Nowadays, all those sorts of parts are sold in bagged assortments and it's hard to check if any match the washer you need to replace.
