Well known to watch enthusiasts as the "value proposition" watch, the Tissot Gentleman does indeed offer a fantastic array of features at a great price including great looks, an 80hr power reserve, and silicon balance spring. I do really enjoy this watch and always recommend it when people ask me for ideas on what their first Swiss automatic watch should be. However, it does have one arguably major and rather ironic issue for watch enthusiasts.
Where I bought my watch:
www.anrdoezrs.net/click-10065...
JS usually has the best prices and still include their own warranty on watches they sell as well despite being a grey market dealer. I feel that the savings offered from JS simply are too good to pass up.

I don’t think they look alike enough for the Tissot to be considered a knockoff. They may be similar in genre, but I think the Gentleman has a more distinct look and is even nicer than the rolex
@TheTimelyFocus
@TheTimelyFocus 2 жыл бұрын
That may be true and there are certainly a lot of subtle differences (haha, or maybe not so subtle depending on how much one studies watches). In particular I much prefer the constant hour markers on the Tissot as opposed to the doubled up markers at 3,6, and 9 on the OP. Plus, you get a display caseback on the Tissot! Haha, rather funny since the Rolex has a much better movement so it would make more sense to want to admire it but then again Rolex basically never makes display casebacks. There is a lot to love about Rolex but it is hard to argue against the amazing value of the Tissot! I appreciate your comment!

I have two "Gentleman" in my collection (silver and black) and I never would think, they look like an Oyster Perpetual. They have different cases, hands and backs and a date window and butterfly clasp which both are not available with the Oyster. I love them ! Great video with very good informations about the history of Tissot. (I'm no native english speaker. Apologies for my english)

Excellent appreciation video. Tissot is a class act. I do have the silver dial version of this and appreciate it enormously; sure there is a bit of a similarity, but when your name is Tissot, or, for that matter, Longines (they have a similar model), I think you can raise a credible point about diversity and inspiration without getting into knockoff territory. Great watch, great vid; stay safe and good luck with grad school.

Thank you Peter! I am so glad you enjoyed it. Oh no question. Tissot has so much history and quality going for it that I am surprised they are not more well known here in America. Yes, I think I may have been a bit too harsh in my video and can totally get behind what you say about the Gentleman having legitimate inspiration from within Tissots own history. I think the success of the OP line definitely inspired Tissot to bring back its own watches of the same style in the form of the Gentleman but that does not mean it is actually a knock of. Thank you for the input! I always appreciate hearing well thought out comments like yours!

Great Review. While watching the Review, I was also thinking that the watch looks very similar to Rolex watches. Then pleasantly surprised that you confirmed the same feeling at the end. If we are getting similar level of accuracy, then yes Tissot has nailed it. Also the silicium model is antimagnetic. Summing up , Tissot offers the highest quality for the money and makes such watches accessible to masses. This was indeed one of the visions of the founding fathers of the company. Kudos Tissot.

I own the Tissot Gentleman and I love it. Very high quality, beautiful dial, and accurate. The only reason I’d want a Rolex is for these exact traits and if the Gentleman offers the same for much less, why would I spend the extra money? I’m not concerned with resell value or the prestige of owning a Rolex. I simply want a watch that looks and performs great. So in the end, the comparison doesn’t bother me in the least. Loved your review and Tissot history. Looking forward to more videos.

Great video Phil!, Tissot is arguably best “Swiss mechanical Watch” for almost every watch enthusiasts, Yeah we do have Seiko & other micro bands out there , but if someone wants that Swiss&good brand history (value) this is probably the best, and the fact that as you mentioned it does resemble like Rolex OP , or Omega aqua terra, end of the day it’s just a vague comparison (&that’s Ok) but hey most of the moderately priced watches do tend to copy similar designs of higher end watches like Rolex,blancpain,omega,AP, this happens in every industry you know, anyway great watch great insight phil! Stay safe!

The similarity to Rolex is a non-issue for me as I buy watches for me, not for what others think. Also, for a fraction of the price, you get so much value (as you mentioned) plus a date-just-esque date window. My Tissot Gent (blue variant with crosshairs) arrives tomorrow after much research and soul searching coming to terms with what budget range I’m in. I have a few nice pieces in the slightly higher range, but the 1k +/- is where I can sit comfortably. Anyway, Great review. Very fair. Subbed.👍🏼

Excellent review, Phil. I do think you're being a little harsh re the similarities to the OP. There are a lot of watches with this "look," and there is only so much differentiation possible. It's a lovely watch and hope you continue to enjoy it as such. Congratulations on starting grad school; it won't be long before you're going upmarket and writing about Audemars, Patek, and Vacheron, lol.

Thank you so much Pete! I really appreciate your kind words and insight. I was just at my local AD checking out some JLC, Patek, and Omega dress watches. It is crazy how similar some of those are (definitely cannot responsibly afford any of those right now, but it is still fun to look). Looking online it seems as though Vacheron and A. Lange also make dress watches that look super similar. Rolex seems to be the most different with a fluted bezel on their Cellini. Considering those are some of the most well respected and oldest brands in the industry, I see your point regarding having only so much latitude to work within for a certain style of watch. In light of this, I would agree with you that I came off a little too harsh on the Tissot Gentleman. It is a great watch that does what it is intended to do very well!

Thank you sir! I really appreciate the input. I will keep that in mind for my upcoming videos and be sure to include even more watch shots. I definitely get that. In the gentleman’s defense, I really enjoy the watch. It draws on Tissot’s own history even if it does look a heck of a lot like the OP. Some commenters here have pointed out that there is only so much latitude a brand has when designing a watch in this style. Even the hallowed Patek, VC, and JLC make some watches that looks remarkably like each other (I would say even more than this Gentleman resembles the OP). Just some thoughts

Glad you enjoyed the video Nicholas! Thank you! I understand the indecision. Went through the same thing myself. I of course did go ahead with the purchase and am still glad I own it since it is such a great watch especially considering the price point. Another way to look at it is to consider that owning the Tissot will allow you to enjoy a great timepiece while you wait to save up for and work with your local AD to actually get the Rolex OP since it will likely take over a year for them to be able to get one for you (assuming that is something you want). During that time, having the Tissot will allow you to be sure you actually like this style and want to follow through with the Rolex purchase when one becomes available. Overall, I still think the positives (including that Tissot does have some historical legitimacy in saying the Gentleman was inspired by a previous design of theirs) out weight the negatives of this watch but that is a personal decision and if it really bothers you a lot that it is so similar to the Rolex, well I would probably find another watch to look into. Hope this helps and enjoy your horological journey Nicholas!

Nice review, thanks, Phil. Love your enthusiasm... however I disagree about it being similar to an OP and find it difficult to see how anyone could possibly consider it a 'knock off'.T he handset is nowhere near the same, there are no 'double' indices on the Tissot, it has a date window. Great watch with great specs for a fraction of the cost of a grossly overpiced, horrendously overrated, overhyped, unobtainable R...x (they say a fool and his money are easily or soon parted applies) . The only downside for me is the polished centre links on the bracelet (this IS a bit Rolexesque, unfortunately). Tissot would have been better IMHO to leave the whole bracelet brushed (the brushing is outstanding!). I have just purchased the green dial variant, it's not what you would call a bright 'sunburst' dial-it's a little more understated. I swapped out the bracelet (which was actually not as annoyingly tacky with the polished centrelinks as I initially thought) for a green leather strap......which looks amazing. At least I have two options (as is usual with most bracelets, taking them off can be challenging). Mine is running +1 second/day (16 hours on wrist/8 hours dial up overnight) . I also have a Tissot Ballade Chronometer , two Hamiltons, two Midos and a Certina DS1 with the same base Powermatic 80 movement. ALL are running well within COSC limits.
@TheTimelyFocus
@TheTimelyFocus 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Graham! That is true, the Gentleman and the OP are not exactly the same but I do feel that there are enough similarities to make them at least comparable to a mash between the OP and DJ. Probably a smooth bezel DJ on the oyster bracelet would have been a better comparison. Good point on the huge price difference. I do wonder what the margins are on both watches. That said, I would be willing to bet that Rolexes margins are not nearly as high as most people would guess given they make basically every part of their watches in house as opposed to many other brands that outsource a big portion of their components to Asia (mainly China and Malaysia). PCLs are something I am rather undecided on. I generally like how they look but they do make scratches more apparent so that is definitely a downside. Putting the green dial gentleman on a green leather strap sounds like a stellar combination. Very impressive that all your watches are running so well but I suppose that is a testament to the huge improvement that has been made as of late and the great engineering that Swatch is doing. I appreciate your input. Thank you sir!

It was obviously a successful and popular roll-out as they're doing versions with the cross-hatch on the dial and the green colour too. I think they must be phasing out the PR100, its closest predecessor in looks. Although that one has a COSC -chronometer version. I guess if the Gentleman comes with a chronometer option in the future, you know it's going to be a stayer in the Tissot range.
@TheTimelyFocus
@TheTimelyFocus 2 жыл бұрын
That is a good point John! I had not thought of it as a competitor to the PR100 either. True, certifying the Gentleman as a Chronometer would definitely imply a desire to cement the watch as a mainstay in the Tissot range. Well said John!

Do you think this watch is too small for an 8" wrist? What do you think of the Tissot gent XL classic (42mm) and swissmatic (43mm)? I like the dial finish much more on this powermatic, but id love any recommendations on similar watches in bigger dial sizes.
@TheTimelyFocus
@TheTimelyFocus 2 жыл бұрын
Not at all. The watch will look smaller than on my 6.75” wrists but that will give it a really classic and somewhat vintage look. Try one on though if you can since in the end how you feel about it is what matters most. The Swissmatic looks cool and has short lugs so even though it is on the larger side will still wear really well. However, take a good long look at the Tissot Luxury Powermatic 80. Wow what an incredible value it is at the current grey market prices of under $300. I have bought a few as gifts and rather wish I bought on for myself instead of the Gentleman. Yes the Gentleman has a slightly better movement (more anti-magnetic), water resistance (50m vs 100m), and great applied hour markers, but I am not sure those warrant nearly double the price. If I were you, I would go with the Luxury Powermatic 80 and never look back regarding this category/price range of watches. Hope this helps!

Thank you Bill! Yeah I get that. I have been wanting a Rolex Milgauss Z Blue for quite a while now and am just waiting for the AD to get one in and give me the option to buy it. Pretty amazing how Rolex is able to maintain such demand. They do make a great product though. Is Rolex better than others from the competition like Omega, Grand Seiko, IWC, etc.? Maybe in some ways but luckily they are not pricing them as if they are markedly better. Most of them are right in the ballpark of these aforementioned brands for comparable products. It is only on the secondary market that many Rolex models are hyped and sold for sometimes many multiples of original retail price.

My embryonic watch collection consists of a Hamilton Field watch (Day/Date automatic, H70505733) and this Tissot, both of which I genuinely love. I am a humble public schoolteacher and am limiting myself to about $1000 a timepiece, so my grail watch, a brand new Rolex 41mm Oyster Perpetual, is well out of my price range for the foreseeable future. Having said that, I totally agree that when I can afford -- and find -- a Rolex OP, I am definitely getting one and retiring (reselling) my Tissot. But until then, I am thoroughly satisfied with my Tissot Gentleman Powermatic 80 w/ a blue dial, it's a beautiful thing.

I understand that some watch lovers don't like homage watches. I personally don't mind it at all. Tissot is a great brand and AFFORDABLE. Just remember that most people cannot afford Rolex prices, and even if you can, you can't find one in stores. My personal collection system is made of 5 watches. The everyday watch, the diver, the chrono, the dress, and the flieger. Tissot has some many great affordable watches, that you can make a full collection just with Tissots. So we would have the Gentleman, the Seastar, the Heritage 1948, the Visodate, and the flieger is the only one missing,... But you can fill up that spot with something interesting from their vast catalogue. Great brand!

It also looks like an Omega aqua tera, and plenty other watches on the market. Look at the Swatch group alone, all the brands have a classic looking design like that. I'd be interesting to compare Tissot gentelmen, a longines conquest, a aqua terra and for the sake of it a oyster perpetual since they all look soo similar, and put up your thoughts if the more expensive watches worth the difference of the value. You can even take a tudor black bay 36/41 In consideration 😎 Looking forward to hear your thoughts. I'm a watch enthusiast but to me the Tissot it's a no brainer, and as I'm getting older I'm struggling to see why we paying top dollar for omega and rolex. Is it worthy? Hhmm.... What do you get for all of that money a part from a NAME?
@TheTimelyFocus
@TheTimelyFocus 2 жыл бұрын
That is a good point Johnny. The overall design and especially the hour markers are rather similar to the Omega AT. Maybe that is one reason I really liked it. I am hoping to pick up an AT in the near future and I will certainly put together a comparison between those watches. The Rolex OP might be a bit hard to source seeing as those have been in quite high demand for the past few years but I will see what I can do. Great idea! Excellent question. As one eclipses the 3k mark, more and more tech is realized. For example, something that the Rolex OP and Omega AT both have which the others do not, is a screw down crown and nearly completely anti-magnetic movements. These are super nice features for everyday wear pieces. The Tissot Gentleman is a particular good value given it has great looks and 100m water resistance and a silicon balance spring which helps it to have relatively high levels of magnetic resistance. Part of me wonders how much it can actually cost to cut some threads and use anti-magnetic components for the mainspring. However, Omega and Rolex do put a lot of work into research and engineering new movement tech which eventually works its way into cheaper models. There will always be a higher level of craftsmanship, detail, and tight tolerances that is expected on the higher end models as well. The question is how noticeable are these differences and are you willing to pay for them. Thanks for the comment! You bring up some great points and ideas!

Thanks for the response. I am a watch geek too but I suppose fortunately I got to see a lot of different watches growing up. The choices you mentioned were all stellar by the way I’ve owned an V&C and a JLC and a Piaget which the Paige at the Tim’s was highly regarded but not quite V&C but I found it to be the most accurate mechanical I’ve ever seen much less owned! So that is the extent of my high end or top shelf watches besides a no date Rolex Sub if you want to consider that but I don’t really. But again it sounds like your eye is on some of the best love to see what you get on KZfaq. Thanks thom

I have one and the power reserve is no where near 80 hours. It's honestly closer to 48 hours max. Not sure if I have a bad one or not. I haven't actually timed it, Maybe I'll do that.
@TheTimelyFocus
@TheTimelyFocus 2 жыл бұрын
I would try and time it to see. One thing to keep in mind is that if you live a relatively sedentary lifestyle/do not move your arm much, the rotor likely will not be able to spin around enough to build up a full wind on the mainspring. Thus, unless you walk around or move your arm a lot, most watches when worn will float somewhere around 50-70% of their max power reserve. If you really want to see the true max power reserve of your watch, give it 30 or so winds of the crown after you take it off for the day to make sure it is fully wound (might not require 30 winds but it never hurts to overwind automatic watches since they have a clutch mechanism to make overwinding impossible. You should be able to feel when this happens) . Tissot generally makes really good watches so I would be surprised if your watch were not able to reach into the upper 70 hours range or even beyond 80 hours. I have tested mine a few times and it is always 80 plus or minus a few hours. However, if I do not wind it after taking it off and have spent a few days working on my computer without moving around very much, then the power reserve is usually around the 50 hour range. Hope this helps! Let me know if you end up testing the PR

@TheTimelyFocus 2 жыл бұрын
I like the Green PRX! Very cool watch. I have not seen one in person yet but from what I can tell it looks like a great watch as well! The 18k gentleman however is not for me. Personally I am rather averse to any two tone models. I want either solid gold or no gold at all (excluding of course hands, markers, etc). Plus, in the case of Tissot, I would like to see a more highly finished movement to complement the gold. Of course this is quite feelings based so feel free to blow off my thoughts, but an 18k gold two tone Tissot feels rather like buying a bunch of Ferrari body panels and putting them on a Ford Focus ST. However, if Tissot pulled out all the stops and made a really high end watch to compete with GS, Omega, Rolex, Patek, etc at a lower price like Ford did with their GT, that would be fantastic

I own the blue dial Gentleman and a Rolex OP 41mm. The Powermatic 80's anti-magnetic silicone hair spring helps separate it from other similar watches in this genre of "everyday/every situation" wearability, including the Rolex Oyster Perpetual. Some may scoff at that statement but if you know...you know. Comparing them in quality, the Rolex stands alone in my opinion. But that shouldn't have you counting out the merits of the Tissot Gentleman Powermatic 80 Silicium or the brand as a whole, as they too stand alone.
@TheTimelyFocus
@TheTimelyFocus Жыл бұрын
That is a great point. Yes, Tissot does a really good job and including an antimagnetic hairspring is a very valuable quality on any watch. I do wonder if in fact the Tissot hairsprings are actually paramagnetic like the Rolex Parachrom Bleu hairsprings. Haha, I suppose we could find out by leaving both on strong magnets and seeing if either were affected. Anecdotally, I do work around a lot of strong magnetic fields and neither my Rolex watches nor my Tissots have been affected negatively in any perceptible way. I expect Omega would fair the same but it would be fun to test more seriously

Yes it is very similar. That is actually a main reason for which I appreciate my Tissot Luxury Automatic more - it is a unique design that does not in any way feel like it is trying to be something else. Great question. These Tissot movements are based upon the venerable ETA 2824-2 and now the Powermatic 80 movements are some of the most popular in production so support for it will be easy to find for decades to come. I have no doubt that Tissot with one of these movements could last many decades with proper maintenance. Rolex has proven to make some of the most robust watches out there and should easily last generations assuming proper care and maintenance as well. I have met many elderly gentleman who have been wearing the same Rolex for over 50 years and their watches still look great and work perfectly. That always impresses me. They both have the same movement which is great but the Gentleman does have double the water resistance at 100m as opposed to 50m. Other than that it really just comes down to which you like the looks/style of better and or which you can find the better deal on. I think either would be a great choice!

@@harshalmankar4710 another great question. With consistent maintenance (movement cleaning, lubrication, and seal replacement) every decade or so, I would imagine these watches could easily last 50 years. The movement is based on the ETA 2824 which has already been around for about 50 years and is extremely popular so sourcing parts and watchmakers who can work on it should never be an issue. Might cost up to a couple hundred bucks to have serviced ever decade by Swatch but you could likely also find independent watchmakers who could maintain it for you just as well for less.
