The Tissot PRX took the watch world by storm when it was first released back in February and it was set to be THE sub $500 watch of 2021, offering Genta design and Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and Patek Philippe Nautilus wrist presence. When I reviewed it I absolutely loved it and I was taken aback by the amount of value it offered for $375. However, one of the biggest problems about the watch was that the seconds hand was misaligned. To make matters worse, it looked like it was a widespread issue amongst most PRXs.
However, someone commented on my first video that if they had bought the quartz PRX, they would remove the second hand. This made me think and I finally decided to remove the seconds hand myself!
In this video, I will take you through the tools needed to remove the seconds hand, how to use a hand removal tool, and finally how to actually remove the seconds hand so that you can fix this issue at home too! I will also go over what I think about the change and how it has affected the overall feel of the watch. Finally we will be taking a look at what it looks like in real life!

Now that the seconds hand is gone, would you buy the quartz version over the automatic??
@Wall2157

Absolutely. But I must admit that I am a little biased against the Powermatic 80 movement.
@thewatchidiot
@thewatchidiot 3 жыл бұрын
Ah yeah the Powermatic 80 is definitely not the perfect movement for sure given the inability to regulate it! What are some of the main negatives from your watchmaker point of view tho?
@Wall2157
@Wall2157 3 жыл бұрын
@@thewatchidiot As you have said, regulating this movement is a pain. If you look at the balance wheel itself, there are two little weights that have to be pushed or pulled to change the timekeeping rate. If you move one, you have to move the other and it is nowhere near as accurate as the traditional paddle system. Swatch claims that these movements are laser regulated and I am sure the machine that does that is beyond expensive, haha. Sadly, other Swatch brands like Hamilton and Certina use the same balance in their 80-hour movements. Beyond that, it seems to me Tissot is trying to cut costs with this movement. Many of its components are made of plastic and it is becoming more and more sensible to just replace the whole movement when servicing the watch. In my view, this defeats the purpose of having a mechanical movement in the first place.
@thewatchidiot
@thewatchidiot 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the insights! Yeah I can definitely see how regulating this movement is more tedious the way you described it. I guess it makes for a movement that is cheaper to produce since it requires less tooling/has less parts? I actually didn't think of the disposability aspect of the plastic parts of these movements but it's a very interesting point for sure. That is sad to hear that they'll most likely just be thrown away considering that one of the beauties of a mechanical movement is that it can be used and restored for generations! Not to mention extra waste, however marginal in the grand scheme of things, is never going to be a good thing for the environment 😕
@martintanz9098
@martintanz9098 2 жыл бұрын
@@Wall2157 that is an excellent point, and flies in the face of why watch enthusiasts fetishize mechanical movements. I had this epiphany a few years ago and for this reason, I am more receptive to quartz again. I will probably never part with my vintage watches, and will do what is needed to keep them running. And I don't have any watches with the powermatic movement. All of mine are ETA 2824 or 2892 movements.

As an apprentice watchmaker, I think you did a great job. The technique for opening casebacks takes a while to get the hang of, so don't sweat the scratch as it is easy to buff out. I would advise you to buy some hand levers and dial protectors if you plan to do work like this in the future. The Presto tool you used to remove the seconds hand is better if you want to take all of the hands off at once. Levers give you a little more control, in my opinion. The dial protectors will, of course, prevent any scratches on the hands and the dial. Also, keep everything on the table for a little more stability. Regardless, fantastic work, my friend. Removing the seconds hand elevates this watch big time. If I get one of these, I may remove it even if it is lined up with the markers. You are the best, brother. Keep doing your thing! -Branyon

Thank you so much Branyon that means a lot to me! And that is so incredibly cool that you're an apprentice watchmaker!!! Yeah I wish I had used the pry tool the first time around but I learned from my mistake loool. What would be the easiest way to get the case back back to all of its radially brushed goodness? Ah ok I'll look into the hand levers for sure and yeah after using my tool I can definitely see how it would work better when removing all the hands. and yeah dial protectors would be awesome to get as well! Thanks once again and yeah I am still surprised at how much of a change that one little seconds hand could make for the PRX! Definitely looking forward to taking in the relaxed experience. And I completely agree now that I've seen it without the hands I think its an upgrade even if everything was lined up nicely. The next mod I've got my eyes on is making one of my gshocks or my citizen promaster diver oil filled! It just looks so unbelievably cool and I cant buy the Sinn UX anytime soon😂 Take care brother!
@Wall2157
@Wall2157 3 жыл бұрын
@@thewatchidiot If you have a watchmaker nearby who does buffing and polishing, they could buff the caseback in no time. If you want to do it yourself, you could buy some ultra-fine sandpaper and brush it in a circular motion applying very light pressure. Absolutely. Tissot should take notes haha. The hand set on the PRX becomes far more elegant without the seconds hand. Man, I cannot wait to see your oil-filled mods. Those are super cool! Which G-Shock are you planning to mod like that?
@thewatchidiot
@thewatchidiot 3 жыл бұрын
Ah ok yeah I think I might try and make a ring the size of the case back so that I can rotate the case back evenly within it. Hopefully it'll result in a clean finish! I think I'll start with a 2000 grit sandpaper and work down to make sure I don't make the brushing deeper than it already is. Yeah I'm thinking of doing it on my base dw5600e! I got it for $25 so I'll feel a bit more comfortable with messing something up there and then I'll move onto the citizen! Time to brush up on my KZfaq research 😂

This is my first time thanking someone on youtube. I really liked the design of the silver PRX and looked forward to purchasing the automatic version. When they released it, I was very disappointed. I did not like the gold bezel, or the waffle dial. So I thought the PRX was not for me. Until I saw your video. I have enjoyed two handed quartz models in the past and this is a great solution. I actually contacted Tissot to see if they could do it since I also learned from watching your video, that I would easily mess it up if I did it myself. Thanks again since I am a huge fan of the silver quartz PRX. The brushed dial and gold hands and a more matching date wheel is much better than the power 80 version

Thanks so much, I'm glad I was able to help out! I totally get what you're saying bc I like the silver quartz version much more than the auto version since it doesnt have the gold bezel and it has that awesome vertically brushed dial which isnt seen very often. its just a better overall package Has Tissot said anything regarding your request yet? And at the very least you could get a local watchmaker to remove the hand for you to make sure its done perfectly. I really do think that the silver dial and gold hands would look especiialy good as a two hander bc it has that extra touch of dressiness about it! Either way, if you get a chance, let me know what you end up doing

I've got the Tissot PRX quartz watch and I actually removed the seconds hand for a more relaxed feel. It's made a big difference and taken away the headache. The watch feels so much better now! But it's a bit disappointing that a watch costing over £250/$320 doesn't have a properly aligned second hand 😅 There are plenty of other brands out there offering well-aligned second hands for a much more affordable price
@jensdono5576

I also think it's a shame that Tissot can't manage to align the second hand properly. After all, it's not a completely cheap watch. But to amputate the second hand because of that, I really would never have thought of it. Without the second hand, this watch is missing something.

Nice mod, really does look nice. Just a note, when you set the minute hand, make sure to go past the position you want to set a little bit, then back up the minute hand (counter clockwise) to the position you want. Otherwise, if you set it directly to the position you want and activate, you may experience a slight lag before the minute hand actually starts moving. If you back it into position, the minute hand will make full contact with the minute mechanist and will start moving the moment you close the crown. This seems to be a common trait with this ETA quartz movement.

Thinner, cheaper, and less potential for complaints are definitely good things for them to have 😂 Yeah definitely give it a go with the mondaine! I love my PRX, I got it as soon as they were released and had to wait since they were sold out immediately. When I got it out of the box the first time I saw the misaligned second hand and was disappointed that a Swiss Made watch could miss every marker where as my cheap Casio beaters and my Citizens and Seiko's hit every marker. I figure I'll wait until mine needs the battery replaced and then I'll either remove the second hand like you did, or attempt to realign it (I have the press, the movement holder, and the hand puller and a hand press). I'm sure it doesn't bother some people but as a watch enthusiast who waited with anticipation for this watch, it's a let down. Honestly though, I can't see how so many of these stainless steel PRX watches are misaligned. It's as if a monkey installed the hand set. You'd think a Swiss watch company with heritage back to 1853 would have better attention to detail. I've seen videos of the new gold PRX and it looks like the second hand is aligned better so I may add one of those to my collection as well.

Honestly and to be fair this is just not the way. Remove seconds hand yes, reattach at exactly 12 oclock and put battery in, if still off remove and readjust position again by the necessary margin, might need 2 or 3 goes. You need to be very careful but correcting this is really not a big deal.

Well, it is your watch so you do what you want. IMO, I would just lived with a quartz seconds hand that doesn't quite hit the markers. A very common issue with quartz watches that in no way affects the function of the watch, except, maybe for super precise stop watch timing in which case you probably would be using a chronograph or stopwatch anyway. Nonetheless, a seconds hand still has a function, maybe timing something less than a minute to within a second or two, which you can't do if you remove the seconds hand. Finally, you might void the warranty with your little DIY, and if you sell it, you need to find someone who is ok buying your little homemade mod.
@thewatchidiot
@thewatchidiot 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah all the points you made are absolutely true! However the PRX for me was always going to be a watch that i only wore on occasion when I just feel like wearing it so I felt better about fiddling around with it and I dont need it rely on it for anything. Also I just really wanted to try this process out lol so it happened to make for an interesting video too!
