According to history this event did happen. The priest's name was Thomas Byles and he had multiple opportunities to board a lifeboat and save himself but chose to stay behind so that others may be saved from damnation.

He was also not the only priest that died comforting the doomed passengers. Father Josef Peruschitz and Father Juozas Montvila did the same thing. They also refused lifeboats in order to comfort the ones who could not escape. Being Catholic myself, it is not unusual for a priest to do that. Many priests have died saving the lives of others.

The shot of the Priest reciting the word to those terrified people and not missing a beat even when the boat lists always get me. Because I know if I was on the titanic unable to get off, I would be one of the people clutching onto him, taking comfort in the word of the Lord before the end. The fact he was there to give that comfort is an amazing image.

The priest at 00:14 onwards is Father Thomas Byles. He was on deck, praying his Breviary when the Titanic hit the iceberg. He twice refused to enter the lifeboats, helped get 3rd Class passengers on deck and into boats. The deck survivors said he went about the deck, saying rosaries, reciting other prayers with passengers and crews. For the crowd of 100 that gathered around him, he granted Absolution. His case for canonization is LONG overdue... especially in light of current bishops who administer the chrismation of Confirmation with cotton balls.

One of the bravest things you can do is tend to others while you yourself face certain death. He could have devoted his time to trying to escape or think of his loved ones. He used his fleeting time on this Earth to comfort others instead, and his mere presence with them in their dying moments must have meant something (perhaps even to irreligious people; to not be alone in death is a comforting thought).

It’s heartbreaking when Rose looks at Helga. You see more context for this in the deleted scenes. While Rose and Jack were first meeting and falling in love on the Titanic, Jack’s friend Fabrizio and Helga were doing the exact same right next to them. Bonding even though neither of them spoke each other’s native languages, getting to know each other through broken English, right next to Rose and Jack. But in the end, with the ship sinking, Helga is forced to stay behind by her danger-ignorant family while Fabrizio goes to a lifeboat. Unlike Rose, Fabrizio couldn’t jump back to stay behind. Unlike Jack, Helga is left to watch him go. Rose and Jack have each other, but Helga is alone, facing the danger without _her_ new love she met on the Titanic.

0:18 such a powerful scene to see Father Byles quoting Revelations chapter 21 and comforting the victims while sacrificing his body and holding on to them until the very end. I am not a religious man but in this very moment of desperation I can understand why one would be comforted by this prayer and holding onto their faith knowing that death is moments away. 21:3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. 21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain, for the former things are passed away.

This line shouldn’t have been in there. When I watched this movie for the first time, I noticed it before the line was spoken, the poetic irony of the very spot where they first met also being the last place they stand on the ship. No dialogue needed to point it out. Sometimes, a film is better with fewer words.

A true man of God. He spends his last moments preparing the gates for the ones praying with him. So they may meet their maker. I realized dying on the Titanic or any boat is possibly the worst way to go. You have time to escape, but nowhere to go and once you are in the Ocean is when the torture actually starts, you can either drown or freeze to death in the dark all alone. Any type of crash whether, plane, car, train. You're likely dead on impact or severely injured.

In real life there was no moonlight when all this happened (it was added in the movie for the benefit of the viewing audience). Imagine being pulled down with the ship, people screaming all around you, the piercing cold waters of the Atlantic... all in pitch black darkness.

The passage from Revelation was chosen to reflect the sad and apocalyptic sinking of Titanic. The ship was a microcosm of the world, all walks of life. The sinking of Titanic was the end of the world because it shook up everything that people thought they knew.

I appreciate Cameron putting in a brief scene with what is probably Fr Byles, there were actually 3 Catholic priests aboard. They were giving General Absolution which would have been in Latin & the basics of Absolution in Latin understood by most Catholic passengers. It was witnessed that there was a recitation of the Rosary led by Fr Byles once all lifeboats departed, most likely also in Latin for the many different nationalities aboard.
