According to Cameron, the tending vessel said the sub was trying to drop ballast (emergency surfacing) when communication and the locator beacon were lost. The transponder had a separate pressure container and battery, and apparently was destroyed in the violent implosion. At the same time, Cameron learned Monday, undersea sonar picked up the implosion but couldn't locate it. The coast guard was told too, but since they couldn't locate it, they hoped it was unrelated and searched as if they didn't believe it was gone.

Perhaps a bit of son of billionaire, does what billionaire asks? This sort of tragedy happens in many areas of life, it's just not everyday people are crushed to nothing instantly 10,000 leagues under the sea. Life is short in the scheme of things. We are lucky to even have an existence on this planet to even bother to explore it with the technology we have developed in 100 odd years. It's amazing really. Good on those who do this stuff I guess or we'd have no reason to advance .

The hull of the Titan submersible was made of carbon fiber. It was never capable of reaching even 10,000 ft in depth without critical problems. The fact that most Navy submarines cannot go beyond 4,000 ft should tell you everything you need to know. James Cameron designed his Deepsea Challenger sub out of special syntactic foam, it weighs 11.8 tons, it has 12 thrusters, and Cameron tested it on his own at a depth of 36,000 ft (11,000 meters). I believe his design was also certified. Science should always come before fun prior to taking dangerous adventures.

Is it "true" journalism, or is it narrated infotainment? I wouldn't confuse journalism with piecing together sound bites of other agencies work, adding scripted narration and graphics and turning it into a slick multimedia segment "journalism". I don't think people really care about the foundations of journalism anymore, just show me something visually entertaining that follows what I want to believe in my head. James Cameron, the Academy Award-winning director of the 1997 film “Titanic” who famously visited the wreckage site dozens of times, appeared on ABC News shortly after news broke of the submersible’s apparent implosion to offer a critical take on OceanGate’s safety protocols. “Deep submergence diving is a mature art,” Cameron said, noting that similar vessels have been rigorously pressure tested due to the threat of implosion. “Many people in the community were very concerned about this sub. And a number of the top players in the deep submergence engineering community even wrote letters to the company saying that what they were doing was too experimental to carry passengers.” “I’m struck by the similarity of the Titanic disaster itself, where the captain was repeatedly warned about ice ahead of his ship, and yet he steamed at full speed into an ice field on a moonless night,” Cameron continued. “For a very similar tragedy where warnings went unheeded, to take place at the same exact site… I think is just astonishing. It’s really quite surreal."
