Hello Niki. It's good to pay attention to small differences. You have good observation skills! I'm American, so I use punctuation that is standard in the U.S. In American English we use periods after abbreviated titles: Dr., Mr., Mrs., Ms, Prof., Rev., etc.
@Englishwithjennifer11 жыл бұрын
Hello. I'll be posting a new lesson very soon! :) Thank you for watching. Regards!
@Englishwithjennifer11 жыл бұрын
Yes, some don't use periods after the titles, but using the periods after those abbreviations is pretty much standard in the U.S. I use Mrs. before my last name, but if people use Ms. that's okay with me. Thank you for watching.

"Ma'am" might be more common as an everyday form of address in the U.S. You might visit someone like Mister Duncan here on KZfaq to ask about "madam" (the full form). Duncan is from the U.K.

You're welcome. Just be careful. I was mostly thinking of a spoken context when I explained these titles. For letter writing, there are other rules. Also, you need to remember to make use of "Dear," as in: Dear Mr. Dwivedi: Dear Atul, Dear Sir or Madam: Dear Customers: Regards!

Hello Marcelo! 1. I don't think a doctor would correct you here in the U.S. Both "sir" and "doctor" are titles that show respect. It's certainly more common and appropriate to address a doctor as "doctor," but that doesn't mean that "sir" is rude. A lawyer is address as Mr., Mrs., Ms., or Miss in the U.S. 2. Rev. Jesse Jackson actually did make the headlines (again) about a week ago, but it was just an example. As long as everyone understands the meaning of the abbreviation, I'm happy. :)

Yes, but that's not usually done when we address someone in everyday conversation. You'd see that pattern in written form, for example, on an envelope with the person's name and full address. Also, you can hear that pattern in a formal announcement, for instance, when announcing an award or a presenter: "...and now, ladies and gentlemen, I give you Mr. Michael Jordan." Regards!

With family, you use their titles: Uncle John, Aunt Sue. Some families are more formal and use these titles: Mother, Father, Grandfather, Grandmother. A lot of families use more familiar forms: Mom, Dad, Grandpa, Grandma. Among siblings, first names are used. Regards!

Hello. 1. No, it wouldn't be polite to ask the woman directly if she's married or not (unless you're trying to flirt with her!). 2. Using "mister" alone can be informal or more typical of a child. "Hey, mister! Watch where you're driving!" To be polite, address a male stranger as "sir." 3. Young children might address a woman named Ann as "Miss Ann" or "Ms. Ann," depending on what she prefers. "Mrs." is usually limited to last names: Mrs. Davis. 4. "Lady" can be a description, but not a title.

Hello! You can use MA'AM alone for a grown woman of any age. MA'AM isn't only for elderly women. Don't use MA'AM with a last name. "Excuse me, ma'am. Would you like some help?" "Thank you, ma'am. Have a nice day." MISS is only for young women. However, it's nice to be called MISS even at my age and even though I'm married. MA'AM sometimes makes me feel old! Does that make sense?

Well, yes."Miss" could be for a divorced woman, I suppose, since she's not married. It's the personal choice of the woman. She might indicate Ms. or Miss on documents. Some divorced women change their name back to their maiden name. Others keep their married name. Kind regards!

Well, I should explain that "Lady" wouldn't be a title for a common woman (a regular citizen of the U.S. or other country). We don't have royalty or nobility here, so we have no kings, queens, lords, dukes, duchesses, or ladies.

There's a simple hierarchy of definition in names in the English Speaking World. First Name: Primary Individual Name Middle Name: Secondary Individual Name Last Name: Family Name The first name refers to the person, the last name refers to a group of related people. You talk to Individual people, not anonymous people to which only the family and gender is known. Don't use honorifics.

I didn't include some of the informal, familiar practices of using last names to address friends, buddies, etc. It's a bit more common among young men.
