Thanks Toni. I’ve never been a granny square fan because it brings back my memories of my grandmothers toilet paper and tissue holders-everything in her house was a granny square. 😂 As much as I loved my grandmother the overwhelming amount of granny squares was crazy. HOWEVER I love the new modern looking squares. They’re textured and so versatile. Definitely will try these!!! Thanks!!!

Those new modern looking squares are NOT granny squares, they are just simply squares.
@lovealwaysmom

@stonytina5177 Correct me if I'm wrong. (Kindly) I believe they're called granny squares because how they are constructed.
@stonytina5177
@stonytina5177 7 ай бұрын
@@lovealwaysmom Granny squares (but also rectangles and other shapes) all use the so-called granny-shell which consists of 3 double crochets (US terms) IN BETWEEN two granny shells of the previous row (please note: NOT into other stitches but in between other shells). They used to call this pattern by a different name in the late 19th century (IIRC it was something like "open dc pattern", and I don't think anyone knows for sure who introduced the term granny square. Personally, I think (no proof for this) they came up with that name because a granny shell project is so easy and simple that even (half)blind and demented grannies still can make them. No intricate patterns, no fancy stitches, just granny shells. If a pattern uses anything else than granny shells, then IMO it's no longer a granny something. It has become a "regular stitches" project. I don't think that a pattern should be called granny square simply because it is made flat and in rounds. For example, Sophie's Universe is made flat and in rounds but it is definitely not a granny square. Also, one can make granny shell projects that are not in rounds but in rows.

Omg omg omg. Your magic ring technique is genius! I'm teaching some middle schoolers crochet and they've all been struggling with this but I think your method is going to help SO much. Thank you for sharing!
@AngiesHooks
@AngiesHooks 7 ай бұрын
It's not a traditional magic ring. It's a "magic" slot knot... Magic ring has an actual ring, then you lay-in the tail before making your slip knot and first row... different technique. Also the chain 2 (for US sc or ch3 for US dc) and cluster the rest of the stitches in the first chain... again different technique. Not magic ring. It's a personal preference thing, but magic rings are hard for mins to understand without knowledge of laying-in yarn techniques

I've halfheartedly tried to crochet in the past - I can knit but for some reason I find crochet difficult to wrap my head around, but recently I've been slowly going through your beginner crochet tutorials and they've been a huge help. I'm still struggling a bit, but I'm doing much better than my previous attempts! Thank you for these videos. Hopefully I can try the ones in this video soon!

Hi, Toni! Would you consider maybe doing a little short explaining why it matters which way we turn our work and how to do it correctly? I've heard it's important (something about which side the yarn ends up on?) but am never sure if I'm doing it the "right" way. (And is it different for in the round vs. flat?) As always, loved this video, you're a great teacher!

Maybe even a longer video on little things that might not seem important but matter in crochet - for the advanced beginner level maybe? I think a lot of us don't know what we don't know that we're doing wrong...

Hi Toni❤, I loved this video and all the granny’s. I am a big lover of granny squares. I recently came back to crocheting after many years away. This time I’m so into it. I’m amazed at all the stitches I learned already. And I pretty well mastered the regular granny square. I was never able to get even close to a granny square so I’m thrilled. I’m in awe of the never ending granny squares. It mind boggling 😂. I like the corner to corner but have been afraid of it. You made me feel like I CAN DO IT! So I’m going to give it a shot. Thank you Toni for all your enthusiasm and fun tutorials. 🧶🧶🧶

I recently started a granny square blanket. Decided on the solid granny to minimize holes + maximize colour. I like to see the options for turning after each round. My squares end up relatively flat and square without turning ... perhaps because I crochet loosely. Many thanks for sharing your methods!

I have to admit, I've never really been a fan of granny squares -even though it was the first pattern I learned. Maybe it was all the potholders, or the red and white vest my great-aunt made me for christmas one year (I swear, it was probably the originator of the ugly-Christmas-sweater rage). However, recently, I've seen some really lovely granny square afghan patterns that have really caught my eye! So I here I am needing a tutorial on how to do the granny square again. Thanks, Toni! My goodness, Toni! I love that saying, "I played Yarn Chicken and lost." That is such a witty and apt description of what has happened to me, too! Being fairly new to intentional projects, I began what I thought was an easy, stash-busting project: A shawl. My inexperience in this became obvious when my shawl was ALMOST complete and the ombre/verigated/paterned yarn I had been using ran out. I had started with what I thought was a huge cake of yarn - not REALLY knowing how much of it had been used and not having the wrapper with it to even have a clue as to what potential brand/color it was led me on a wild goose chase of Epic proportions! Come to find out the most likely yarn was an out of stock/discontinued color scheme, so I had some decisions to make with that! Learned quite a bit from that... And now I know WHY all the crafters before me (who passed their yarn stashed to me) had so many partial skeins left in their stashes! They always bought MORE than they needed for a project. LOL So here I am, likely making beaucoup kelidescopes of Granny Squares to bust through the variety of yarns in this combined stash. Thanks so much for making this tutorial!

I love the different variations on the granny square motif. However I hate joining them. With a small project it is not so bad. But if it is a large project with lots of smaller squares I would rather not. If I am designing a project that uses squares I tend to do 8" or better. Especially if I am crocheting them together. Sewing is much quicker but sometimes the join just calls for crochet. Making the squares is quick and easy. Putting it all together is what takes the most time🤗.

You are the BEST, I'm currently binging your whole catalog and mentally cataloging what I want to make of yours! Two questions maybe you (or someone here can help me with): 1. Does a turning chain only count as a stitch when it is specifically said that it does and 2. When you say a project takes X number of skeins/balls/etc, does that include yarn for swatching? So if something says it takes one ball, do you really need two if you want to do a gauge swatch? Thank you!

Hey Toni, these are fantastic! I am curious as to why you don’t do a chain two or three as your first dc? I love the way yours look, so it’s not a different esthetic, but most other gs patterns I’ve seen use the two or three chain as the 1st dc…anyway, love your videos! Keep them coming, please!

Never turned my work at end of round for squares and never had it look like a vortex. Don’t like the effect that putting the backside on the front every alternating row. You can definitely see the difference between the rows. Especially on the solid square. The front and back of stitches look different.
