Loving the old stories. I remember years ago I went to Donington to help out my mate Scott Ferguson who had moved down from Glasgow and he was racing a TZ350 and doing well in the Marlborough Clubman's series. This meeting was a full blown national though and Niall was there as was Donnie McCleod. I arrived on my GP100 with Allspeed race pipe and the head gasket decided to blow on the way up. Scott was friends with one of the mechanics (can't remember if he was Niall's or Donnie's) but his name was Hamish and he basically whipped the head and barrel off my bike, lapped the surfaces with some paste and a sheet of glass, bolted it all back together and said "that should get you home but go steady and get the jets done or you might blow it up..." On the way home I was flying on what we call the Shardlow straight with an indicated 85mph! I used to get 65 before. I was so well happy until all of a sudden there was a little "Pop" and all power was lost. I had to push the bike home (11 miles) and it turned out I'd put a nice little hole through the top of the piston! Eee, them were the days!!! 😉

Love the new format. The old man will have so many stories back in the day. I remember seeing him at Donnington when the GP riders did a grass track stint they put on, in the campsite on Saturday night. It was wild in there that night. I can remember a police helicopter hovering above, that was until a bunch of Italians let some rockets off and they exploded on the helicopter. The police and fire engines were all lined up outside but wouldn’t come in. It was carnage everywhere. Hire cars and bikes flying about in the dark, cars rolled on their side, bikes driving straight over tents. My friend had a 250 crosser, going flat out in 5th, in the dark. No lights and 3 people on it. When I first got there, mid afternoon on the Saturday, some lad had gone to the Porta a Loo and his mates rocked it over. He crawled out covered in blue and other liquid. We all thought what have we done, then we got pissed and it carried on until daylight. One of the best nights I have had, but totally reckless. Keep those old stories coming, it was a fun time before corporate responsibility was invented.

I’ve been a huge fan of Mac senior since way back when. I got my eager hands on a signed copy of his autobiography when it came out, and have read it cover to cover multiple times. He came across as an ordinary guy: the most modest of all the ‘superstar racer’ from all the biographies I read. (Not a real welder). He made a younger me believe anything was possible. When we moved to NZ and cleared out nearly everything, Nialls precious book came with us. I was so excited to finally get an incite into the man behind the legend through Taylor’s ‘Mac Chat. Needless to say it is now in a box to go to a charity shop! 😆

I did two seasons in the scottish post Classic championship a few years ago, it was the wettest two years I ever had on a bike. ha ha. I only rarely saw the next corner through the clouds. Great stuff guys.
