Great Job. You make it look so easy. I have 3 Norelco Razors so at some time I probably will be replacing the batteries. Thanks for all the information & it was a really quality video. People really don't realize how difficult it is to make a good video that is focused correctly & clear & easy to see all the details. Thanks again. Sincerely, JAMES.

I think it is very important for safety reasons that you don’t give the wrong information about batteries as they don’t all use the same charger and if an unsuspecting novice on your advice would put it the wrong battery you can make the things go booooom. Another thing I noticed was the way you put the screws back in there holes by straight away turning them clockwise and by doing so you can damage the thread in the soft plastic. ( called stripping the thread ) These screws are “ self tappers and if not put in their proper groove can render your hole useless . My advise “ insert screw in hole, insert screwdriver into screw , turn anti clockwise and put slight pressure on screwdriver until you hear a slight “ click “ which means the screw is in the groove of the tread and now go clockwise and tighten screw !

Excellent video, good quality and smart placement of shaver. Easy to follow. I think I will give it a try. Mine is a Phillips Philishave wet model (pre Aqua touch), at least 15+ years old, so doesn't owe me anything. The battery life is 2-3 shaves, and replaced the blades once so no complaints. Just in case, I bought a new model (on sale) ,but will keep the old shaver as a spare for travel.

Appreciated your detail. All looks same as my 8240XL except my battery is Lithium Ion 3.7Vdc 750 mAh . I liked the demo of the solder sucker. Wish I had one; but, I opted for the less expensive (will seldom use) solder wick. My battery tabs do not match length or width so will need to trim both. My less expensive (older model) Reflex Plus 6617X uses the 1.2Vdc Ni-MH battery, but, your instructions came in handy for both shavers. Note: I removed the battery w/o noting the polarity. Your mention of polarity answered the remaining question I had before finishing my battery install. Thank You

Thanks, Tom. I have a System 7000 shaver that I am refurbishing. It is a little different in assembly detail, but your video worked for me. It was not too technically difficult at all. I appreciate your time in making the video. The Li cell is standard in my model, and I am pretty sure that your original (at 4.0 Vdc) was actually Li also, and the charger should be Li specific also (for safe operation); but, I can only be certain where my own unit is concerned. No matter though, the process was still good and applies. Thanks again! Steve M

Very well done. I accidentally dropped mine in 2012, and broke the part that flexes and holds the blades in place. My girlfriend replaced it with a cheaper one from Sam's Club, which only works when the charging cable is disconnected. I'm very happy with my current razor, but I definitely miss my XL. I recently tore it apart to repurpose, and make a personal fan for my daughter. The unit works as well as the day I bought it, but now it has a new reason for living. My XL is easily the best I've ever owned. Thank you for this video.

Good video, very helpful. It was easy to take apart. Unfortunately the tabs on the new suggested battery were ore than twice as thick than the original and a bear to trim down. Also, on my 3000, I had to unsolder the two small wires so I had access to the battery tabs. Unfortunately, the solder sucker did not want to draw out all the solder from the tiny holes. I had to poke the wires into the holes while holding them in small pliers in one hand, solder gun in the other. A minute and a half to take it apart, hour and a half messing with the battery and wires, a minute to put it back together. Just a tiny bit tedious! Haha! It’s good to have a hobby. I’m not a fan of all the planned obsolescence these days.

I've had an 8150XL for nearly 17 years, regularly shaving 5 or 6 times a week for the last 10 years, and the battery is just now starting to lose charge noticeably faster. Based on the budget you describe I'm leaning towards full replacement when it drops off too much. I've already replaced the blades once along the way

I have had the same one as you for what I think is about 20-22 years now. Not sure when I got it exactly. After using it pretty much 7 days a week for all that time, the battery low light is flashing half way through the 1st shave off the charger. I have also only changed the blades once. This video was great but I don't own a soldering iron so I think I'll just get a new one. It has served me well. Time to upgrade.

I also have this model of Norelco shaver. Worked fine for almost ten years, and then one day it just quit. It would only run if the charging cord was plugged in. I suspected that the battery had went kaput, so I disassembled it to see if the battery could be replaced. Like you, I found that it was a simple operation to replace the battery. Ironically, the date code printed on the PCB was 06-05-17, which was oddly close to the actual date the shaver quit working. First, I thought that the microcontroller was programmed to kill the shaver on or around that date, forcing you to purchase another one. But since replacing the battery fixed it, that might not be the case. Unless removing the power reset the controller?

It appears that your new battery was a rechargeable Lithium Ion battery (new battery in video was CR14500) NiCd battery voltages are 1.2Vdc not 3.7Vdc, Also it is not an "ordinary" AA battery as you stated in the video.. You should more accurately describe the parts used in your videos. Yes some Norelco shavers use a NiCd battery, usually a pair. Others seem to use the Li-ion rechargeable.

It's frightening how many people liked this video and just about everything he said was wrong. I cringed at "3.7v nicad." yikes. The color of the cell, the voltage, "14500" all screamed lithium ion.
@JoeRodge
@JoeRodge 4 жыл бұрын
M 40: Just about everything you said was also wrong. Depending on the chemistry the nominal voltage varies. So some charge up to 4.2, 4.3, 4.35, 4.4. Also, neither of those cells were protected. The PCB is on the shaver circuit board. You did get the cut off voltage of about 3.2V right though. But it wouldn't surprise me if it went even lower before cutting off.

The battery you used is a lithium battery, not a Nickel Cadmium. You did replace the battery with the correct battery however you are explaining the battery incorrectly. The battery you used is a ICR14500 which means: ICR - Lithium Cobalt Oxide 14500 - Standard AA size (14mm diameter and 50mm length of cell) Hope this helps anyone else.

I am thinking about upgrading to 2500 mah NiMh low self discharged battery and three new generic brand razor heads cost $1.69 each($5.07 total one set) on my dad's 7110 then same on my 7310 (originally both use 1.2V NiMh batteries) but not sure about which side is positive and which is negative, any suggestions on that? Will a regular AA rechargeable battery work? I can tell the positive side easily.
@tmc200527
@tmc200527 8 жыл бұрын
+TheYoungBoaty There could be a a charge on the new batteries that you can measure with a volt meter to determine the polarity. A regular AA rechargeable will not have solder tabs on it and it's difficult to solder to it without damaging it.

By some (or may be most) shavers one should not try to "unsold" the accu contacts, 'cause the printed-circuit board would "go phut" irreparably! You should just carefully cut ("break") contacts from the accu body!

The soldering job was very sloppy, and I think he got lucky. After he removed the original battery, he should have used the Ohmmeter function of that Fluke meter to check for continuity between the battery soldering pads and the adjacent pads. The spacing between the adjacent soldering pads on this board is very tight, and the original soldering is done in a way that tightly controls the amount of solder that gets picked up by the pad. This guy bent the pads over nearly on top of a couple of adjacent pads and then applied solder to the opposite side of the hole. That isn't the ideal way to do this, and after he did that, he didn't check to make certain that he hadn't created any wrong solder bridges. Sloppy and lucky.

Same with Tech companies if the LCD broken buy new phone. I am thankful to EU that they continuous to impose new laws regarding chargers etc. i hope they make laws for -easy to change/upgrade parts. -a common charger, currently Apple's fast charger doesn't fast charge other products and vice versa -a common power plug across the whole world currently every country have their own plug type. -easy to change/upgrade parts. -mobile with atleast 20,000 mah batteries :)... I will write this to EU, i hope they will listen to us.

I'm pretty sure those models use Ni-MH battery and not Ni-Cad

Just one comment. That is not a NiCad cell. It's a Lithium Ion cell.

My Norelco 3D doesn't even have visible screws to disassemble it. When the battery quits charging you have to throw the whole thing away. That's $100 wasted.

There seems to be a couple of videos on youtube discussing how to disassemble that shaver but they seem to have purposely made it difficult to take apart. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hL2IYMtll9alj2g.html

So heads ~$20 and battery ~$10 and entire package (including the razor itself) ~$30 ? So Norelco essentially gives out the razor for free when you buy as a package? But why toss out a perfectly good razor with a good motor? Good economic sense, bad environmental sense. Would be nice if it was solder-less, usually batteries just snap in and out.
