CLASSICS ARE BETTER

3 жыл бұрын

On this episode of Classics Are Better I am installing a one piece TMI fiberglass headliner in my '67 Camaro. All their one piece headliners install pretty much the same way, so hopefully this can help be a rough guide to some of yall thinking about going this route as well.
I will say that it took forever to do it alone, so give yourself PLENTY of time. The instructions recommend having at least two people, which after fighting this thing all afternoon, I am inclined to agree the more hands the better getting it installed.
Overall I think that it came out great. The A pillars didn't fit well, and need some further massaging, but I think all in all it looks pretty good, much better than the nothing I started with!
***UPDATE*** So I found the solution to the sun visors not fitting. You need to get TMI brand sun visors. Even though I had bought '67 Camaro Sun Visors from a reputable company, they were a different brand, and were too long as seen in the video. Just got my TMI visors delivered and they clipped right in with out any issues.

@@CLASSICSAREBETTER some of their Chargers only charge pairs of batteries and my Headlights use 3 so I have many extras to allow me to wait to charge until 6 are dead. Haven't put my TMI headliner in yet but I did try to mock up the A-pillar covers and just like you said they are horrible! Don't even come close to fitting right. Not sure what I'm gonna do at this point but they aren't going to work as is. I'll either try to modify the TMI covers and then recover them or see if the stock ones will work with the headliner.

Hey thank you for watching Jose, I don't currently have one for carpet, but from personal experience, lay the carpet out in the sun awhile to dewrinkle, spray some adhesive on the back, but give a few min before pressing it down to get tacky, then use a mallet or something like that to help rub the carpet down flat in your car/truck.

Did you use the wind lace at the front and rear, from video it looks like vinyl just wrapped over fiberglass.
@CLASSICSAREBETTER

I used the wind lace along the top of the door & rear quarter windows to basically pinch the headliner to the metal pinch weld of the roof. Far as along the front windshield and rear windshield, it is just the headliner itself, no wind lace.

Hey man. Great video. Chose to go this route because of it. Out of curiosity what pieces did you need to secure the headliner? I got that the rear view mirror bracket, and sun visor bracket's hold the front up. You got the dome light holding the center. You have the windlace holding in the fabric on the sides. But is there anything holding up the back end? And is anything else missing to hold it up that i didn't mention already? Thanks

I'm currently trying to install mine and I've a couple questions. On the windlace did you tuck the fiberglass and the black vinyl or was it just the vinyl? Mine seems to short on both side to tuck the fiber. Also the front and the back of the old headline had a molding did you install those because it seems the TMI curves up and I see no way of putting that molding back on unless I cut a bunch of fiber off and pull away the vinyl. You also mentioned having more head room, how did you get it tight against the roof? I've much less head room and mine doesn't seem to fit tight against the roof. I feel like it's made for a different car it fits so bad all round. Any info on this would be appreciated.
@CLASSICSAREBETTER
@CLASSICSAREBETTER 5 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! In my case on the windlace, once I had it all in place, I trimmed the vinyl to fit better as I went, mine had a lot of overhang on the sides, making sure not to cut too much. I removed the old moldings from the front and back and just installed the headliner as it came, seemed to fit just fine with out them on my car. Mine does fit pretty tight to the ceiling, did you add a dome light? That zipped mine up a bit. Worst case you got a wonky mold from the factory or it warped in shipping, might need to call TMI. Take a lot of pictures to prove your point before you cut up anything.

Hey thanks for the detailed video, but I have a critical question: you removed the metal strips that surrounded the back glass and front windshield, is that because they are not needed with this one piece? If not needed, how is the windlace attached on the back glass area? TiA.
@CLASSICSAREBETTER
@CLASSICSAREBETTER 9 ай бұрын
Those metal strips only work with the original bows headliner ( I believe), the TMI headliner is held up by the rear view mirror screw and visor mounts up front, windlace on the sides, and the rear is held up with the rear side sail panels. Thank you for watching!

Honestly can't answer that, I have never put a factory headliner in a 67 Camaro, but I would assume that the bows and stretching the fabric etc it would just be another added headache to battle above your head lol. This would have been a lot easier with 2-3 ppl.

Question about the front and rear metal frames. It appears your not putting the windlace back on the front and rear of the headliner (just the sides) correct? Because you wouldn’t be able to put it on without those metal frames in place. Correct?
@CLASSICSAREBETTER
@CLASSICSAREBETTER 9 ай бұрын
Yes I only used a windlace on the the sides. The front and rear fits pretty flush on mine, the screwing in the rear view mirror is what attaches the front and the rear sail panels hold up the back. I don't think your fingers would have room to use that front or rear windlace due to the glass being in the way. My headliner is still in great shape, I will say that it lasts, thought the A Pillars still suck lol.

One more question. Did you glue the headliner to the underside of the headliner with some headliner adhesive? And if so, did you glue the sides or just the front and back? My question is regarding the sides. Wondering if tucking it is enough or would it look tighter to glue above the sail panels?
