TMNT: Shredder's Revenge - Gnarly No Death Clear (Splinter / Arcade Mode)

TMNT Shredder's Revenge is finally out! This is a brand new beat 'em up developed by Tribute Games, which was heavily inspired by Konami's classic arcade games, and the early 90s era of the series. I grew up on this stuff, so it's nostalgic seeing all of the references to the cartoon, movies, and games. They packed so much into it, that they ended up with a run time of nearly 2 hours, making this one of the longest beat 'em ups I've ever played. That'll be somewhat polarizing, but I don't mind the length, personally.
Gnarly is the name for this game's hard mode. The normal difficulty is very easy to clear, and while Gnarly seemingly had very minor adjustments, it's quite a bit more difficult. From what I can tell they basically make you take twice as much damage, and bosses have twice as much health. I think some enemies also move faster or can be more aggressive, but I'm not really sure tbh. Still, you get 1UPs every 200 points, so you've got a lot of breathing room for mistakes.
Splinter is really strong. I'm not sure if he has higher DPS than Raph, since his attacks are slow, but he hits like a truck. The third and fourth attack in his combo do extra damage, and his running attack does 3 points of damage - the highest in the game. His supers aren't that great, but they get the job done.
So I managed to clear the game without dying. The biggest roadblock was Captain Zorax, but he's not a problem once you understand how he works. I was overthinking it until now by trying to be super aggressive, but all you need to do is go on for a combo, back off to avoid his punch, move down/up to dodge his gunfire (he shoots 3 times at first, then 6 times when he's below 50% health), and go back in for another combo. You should also make sure you have a super ready for his stampede. When he does that, the first dino he sends seems to be straight at you, so most of the time you can move to the top or bottom of the screen and get a quick taunt in. You'll want that super to instantly kill the dino that stays behind. And that's all you really need to do, he's not too dangerous if you play safe and reach him with most of your health (to keep the extra pizza for backup).
Chrome Dome is still pretty dangerous. You need to keep track of the timing for when he's going to punch you, otherwise one good smack could lead to the end of your no death run. I also think it might be safer to just clear out all the Foot soldiers and hit the barrel when he drops down, instead of tossing one of them at the screen. That leaves you open for a moment, so you have to be really careful about doing that.
The rest of the game isn't that hard once you understand what to do. I gotta admit though, I thought I was dead after I got hit on the statue, then took some more dumb hits on Super Shredder. That was too close for comfort.
PS. There's a cut right after Leatherhead. I had to go to the bathroom and just let it run for a bit, I think I edited it together pretty cleanly though. Just pointing it out if anyone sees it and wonders why it's there.
Anyway, this is a great game and I'll be playing it a lot more. If you're a fan of the classic turtles, you have to play this. It was made for you!

Splinter DPS is likely higher than Raphael. Against common enemies it doesn't matter much, but when you're fighting bosses you don't get to complete your combo very often; Splinter's third attack doing so much more damage (as well as his dash) means that both his opener and where you generally end combos before dodging end up doing way more damage at a more consistent rate. But still, it's nice to see someone else digging really deeply into this game. Now, do a no-death clear without taunting once. ;)

This game could really benefit from: A block and parry system with unique counterattacks for every character - like blocking takes reduced damage, parrying (blocking with timing) enables counterattack follow up with unique properties like a dash slash for Leo, sai one inch punch for Ralph with knock back and wall bounce, bow staff slam that bounces into air launch, nunchuck counter combo (like a command throw in fighting games) for Mikey that staggers enemies for combo follow ups… etc. just make combat more rewarding a deep. Super move cancels and super move properties like suction, stagger, etc. really help the characters have unique play styles… besides forward, AoE, and Air specials… More enemy depth or multi hit enemies in more difficult stages and for higher level bosses… find a way to make the game have more of a challenge and some depth. Limited taunting…. Arcade should be the real challenge. Meaning give us all 3 super bars, reduce taunt exploit (add items that fill your taunt chi, and make parry’s fill your taunt chi bar or whatever…) taunt is kinda an exploit that could be more nuanced… Add this with more unique attack sets for all the characters like more interesting basic combos… and the game is perfect. This game is right there, the characters all feel too similar in play style minus the three stats…

Nah you know what it needs, a indication that the boss is gonna attack. Why is Rocksteady and Metalhead so damn hard!!!? They hit you before you can even walk away after a combo. And that damn Truck on the bridge

You’d be making it teenage mutant streets of rage lol I think that sounds cool but one thing to keep in mind is that most people they’re targeting with this game just remember the arcade and having fun with their friends I’m all for more options I play fighting games SR feels like the next step after TIT a little different but real similar from enemy placement to types of attacks hopefully they do another game or expansion. I notice story mode says complete season and each level is an episode maybe there will be lost episodes or new seasons. I’d love to have a survival mode were you just fight waves of foot and friends. I think the buddy moves would be cooler if they worked like simpsons arcade or activated when to people did supers very close to eachother. I haven’t played a 6 players brawler since X-men on ps3 definitely scratches that turtle itch and has a feel so distinct just like the old days I’d love more moves more intricate combat but at the same time I love the zaniness and fun of the arcade. It’s so different than everything else that’s out Rn they’re really bringing the fun and wxcitement with this one. I hope shredder or Batman will be playable. They just did a Batman Turtles crossover movie that would be pretty dope some side content a quick story a couple characters maybe batgirl and Damien. Way longer of a response than I planned on my bad. Great play iconoclast I haven’t gotten past the second stage on Gnarly and that was playing online too everyone seems scared of gnarly lml

Another idea...if certain bosses have remarks and stuff that are character specific, and character specific remarks. E.G. Splinter vs. the Rat King, Leonardo Vs. Tempestra, Donatello vs. Metalhead)

I love to see more combo routes and more ways to juggle your opponents with different kinds of attacks like sor4, which really set the standard for attack combo freedom for years to come! Updates and new additions will surely make a great game even better!!

One really overlooked benefit of Splinter is his Super Flying Attack actually doesn't move him. It's basically a rapid series of projectiles, a trait that he shares with only one other character; Karai. This makes Splinter actually really good at busting bosses while safely staying out of melee range - you can see that with Groundchuck and Dirtbag in this video. Coupled with his sheer reach, which is roughly equivalent to Casey Jones and third behind Donny and Casey, he's an incredibly safe fighter if you monitor your spacing and compensate for his slow movement speed. Then you discover he hits like a runaway freight train, and Foot Clan just evaporate under his attacks. Splinter's other attacks also tend to have unusual properties. For instance, his running attack not only deals a ton of damage, but also brings him to a dead halt almost on a dime. The fourth attack of his normal combo has a huge hitbox, way bigger than it seems - you can hit enemies with it that are in no contact with Splinter's body. He also has a shorter hitbox than most other characters, making dodging projectiles like Rocksteady's energy-shotgun and Groundchuck's horn missiles easier. The first time I ever beat Krang and Super Shredder solo without taking damage, it was on Splinter. Excellent playthrough - really shows off what Splinter can do. he might not be the fastest thing around, but if you know how to use his reach to compensate for his speed, he will definitely show you why *he's* the Master here.

@@jamaaelmariano3242 No, Splinter adopted them after they fell into the sewer, and they all got mutated after they were all exposed to mutagen. Also, instead of having been an ordinary rat who was the pet of Master Hamato Yoshi, Splinter WAS Yoshi.

Both, I think. I found in my own experience the game felt easier with Splinter and he was the second character I played with.

Splinter is good, but it's mostly from being more familiar with the stages and boss strategies. I think I'd have an easier time with April, Casey or Raph now.

Enemies do a lot more damage on Gnarly compared to normal, and bosses have more health. I think both are 2x, not sure though.

In addition from what I heard from someone on Discord is that bosses move more faster and they are more aggressive after you inflicted a certain amount of damage to them.
