Never quit short story: Dad had a brain tumor when I was 10 - went to a nursing home. My Mom killed herself when I was 11. Dad died 6 months later. I'm 48 now with a 15 yr old daughter. Served in the Old Guard from 1997 - 2000. Much respect!

This will probably sound goofy, but I had no clue how bad brain tumors were until I had one at 22 when my daughter just turned 4. I shouldn't say I didn't know how bad they are, but didn't know a whole lot about them. I thought it was something that only happened to older people with cancer. Mine was the size of a golf ball and was lodged between my optic nerve and my pituitary gland. I started getting really nasty nose bleeds during PT and getting super clumsy and uncoordinated, then numb tingles on the entire left side of my body. The doctor initially sent me to get lab work and to the allergy specialist and she said that there was no sign of it being related to allergy, and I was sent to an eye doctor who saw my optic nerve looked odd on my left eye. Literally walking out of the doctors office I collapsed into a seizure and hit the corner of my head on the curb in the parking lot. When I came to in the hospital I was In so much pain and freaking out so bad because my arms and ankles were strapped to keep me from falling out of the bed with the extreme seizures I was having. Within 20 minutes of waking up to a room full of nurses and doctors, I was almost immediately informed that my Marine Corps career was basically over and then was informed of the brain tumor. I have never been so crushed in my entire life like I was then. I absolutely truly loved the Marine Corps (believe it or not) every single bit of it and I was preparing myself to go as far as I can with it. I just couldn't accept that this was happening to me, I was in the best shape, every part of my life was planned and dedicated to my career and I just kept thinking "this can't be happening to me, they must be wrong, I'm not even old so how is this happening? I'm screwed, this can't be happening to me". I was told that I would lose function of the left side of my body and eventually won't be able to use my left side at all, and I wouldn't be able to have children and that I would be fully dependent on a wheelchair at some point in the next few years. Well, after months of being in the ICU at the university of Cincinnati hospital after they removed the tumor, I have a daughter and a son now, I worked my body back up to being able to jog and then full run and then playing sports again with my son now. I let myself sink so incredibly far down into depression for a while and allowed myself to become addicted to the pain medication and that led to even worse stronger things that involved needles (I'm sure you get the point). I let things get so bad and neglected my marriage, my role as a father and just got so extremely sick that I went from a healthy 6ft 210lbs Marine to a 140lbs heroin addict within a two year period. I'm very embarrassed that I let things take me out like that. I thought I was invincible for such a long time and never expected for anything to happen to me like that. I'm now at a point where I'm completely free of my addictions and run daily and am continuing to lift weights and eating healthy again. Although I'm not the young devil dog that I used to be, I'm not the useless lump of clay that so many doctors told me I would be. I currently live just outside of Cincinnati, directly on the Ohio River where I grew up, on the Kentucky side lol. I saved my marriage and have been with my wife for almost 20 years, my children are doing outstanding in school, my daughter is 16 and my son is 8 and they are both jammed full of the competitive genes that I had and are full of the fire, gasoline and vinegar that pushed me through some extremely dark times and some of the worst things are things that I can't speak about on here, lol. Now I spend a lot of time volunteering at the veterans hospital in Cincinnati and try to spend as much time as I can helping my brothers and sisters who need an ear to listen to them and I help the families the best I can. Most importantly though, I continue my relationship with Jesus, which I always have had. I credit him in everything I do because of everything he has done for me and continues to do for me, my family and the strangers who I have never met but still consider my brothers and sisters. I know that a lot of people tune out as soon as someone starts to speak about God, so I just wanted to plant a seed in the mind of people who haven't considered a relationship with him. He exists whether you believe in him or not, speak to him and give yourself a chance. Sorry for the long comment, everyone. Be safe out there, remember that there are people and a God who love you and all you have to do is accept it. I love my brothers and sisters and that means every single one of the people who will read this. I pray for every one of you. Semper fi

Never quit story (recently) I'm a nursing assistant at a hospital, walked in, assignment board; 32 patients and I was by myself. Call lights, bed alarms, vitals, baths, ambulataing patients, bathroom, 1 to 1 feeding 3 meals for feeding, turning patients, patient requests, nursing orders, doctor orders, no bathroom, no water, no break, charting, hustling and grinding, pure fucking chaos for 12 hours. Went home, completely wrecked. Woke up the next morning and did it all over again. Never quit

We shoot, scoot, and communicate--literally. We've been on range and tactical training for months now. Two years ago, I had to lean against the wall and slide myself to my desk. This is one of the best podcasts I have ever seen/listened to. Huge fan of your show as well as Shawn’s. I did a some tours in OIF and was medically retired in 2013 after 11 years in. I dealt with a lot of the issues you talk about on here. Depression, anxiety, never getting solid sleep no matter what I tried, drinking entirely too much, not knowing what to do next, etc.. I tried talking to a therapist on a couple of different occasions and immediately got frustrated with the process. I finally hit rock bottom last year and ended up self-admitting into the local VA hospital’s psych ward after realizing where the inevitable end to the path I was taking would be and recognizing that I could not steer myself away from that destruction alone. I am about a year and a half removed from that hospitalization and have been attending individual and group therapy regularly since. It’s a hard road, especially for somebody with this type of background where weakness was never an option and anything perceived as weakness fell into that same category. Unfortunately the mental health stigma attached to veterans nowadays does nothing but perpetuate these problems. I was fortunate enough to find a therapist within the VA who I finally feel takes a vested interest in finding solutions and not just dosing with medications. Unfortunately I know that’s not always the case. This type of advocacy and even just speaking openly about these kind of issues is so powerful. It opens that door for those who may not be able to overcome that stigma otherwise. Props to you guys for the work on the show as well as the work you guys talk about outside of it.

This broadcast was awesome. I love the joking around but also love the seriousness and reality of everything you guys talked about. I know for me being a part of the military never leaves you. I still wear my boots and some mornings it takes a minute for my mind to register and put everything together. And then there is the sleepless nights where all you think about is what you're missing out on, and how no matter what you do you can't go back. Almost makes you feel worthless and with no purpose. I think it's the sense of pride that is instilled into us, it kinda feels like it's taken when you're not in anymore. But I enjoyed it brothers, MUCH respect I know you've been through much more than me.

Thank you, Brothers !!! Thank you for talking about some of the feelings that I have gone through, and still go through at times. The podcast took that turn where it went from joking and laughing, to a more serious tone, and that clicked with me. Even though I wasn't SOF, just a boring (but, PROUD) Infantryman, I connected with what Shawn was talking about. Again, THANK YOU, for the humor, and purposeful, content of your podcasts. They always seem to help me up when I am feeling down...whether due to my petty health issues, or just dealing with the constant fight against depression that combat veterans sometimes allow to seep into our lives. Keep up the great work, Brothers !

Excellent video on transitioning from the military it does come quick. I’d have to bet that at least 90% of people wait until its to late. It definitely took me a months to not feel like a piece of crap after I got out but with help of my old Chief my life did get better all it takes is sometimes someone to help you out and yes ask for help. Thank you guys from a vet for keeping all of us here in the states safe while you guys were a out there away from home and in harms way.

Just recently found out about this podcast, watched some of the 10-15 minute clip videos and instantly thought this looked cool, sat down and chilled out and just zoned out and listened and man this has gotta be one of the better podcasts I've ever watched/listened too, perfect blend of down right hilarious anecdotes and serious sentiments, you guys fuckin' rock and the things you were saying about everyone having their own struggles and listening to Shawn explain how he overcame his were a real kick start for me to start to try and sort my own shit out. This is how you gain a subscriber, keep on doing what ya do and I'm sure this channel and podcast will go HUGE.

Great show boys and always getting topics discussed that most people don't want to speak about, but to heal and to grow we have to talk. Even as courageous and brave as Shawn is, he couldnt say the words when he was talking about the low point that caused him to reach out. I am sure he grew from this show! Thank you for paying it forward.

Not sure if this will reach you guys but I really appreciate all you do. Shawn's story resonated hard with me in terms of substance abuse and that dark path it usually takes you down. Finding out you have more in common with badass operators from across the pond then you think, really drives home that there is such a unity in personal struggles. Thanks Shawn for opening up you just made my pathway a little clearer. Peace!

Navigation of VA takes so much persistence. Shawn is an excellent teacher - I realized that before I even saw this. I’ve watched several videos he has done. You all are the best. I cannot say how much I admire all of you. Pray for all the young men coming back with neurological damage in whatever form. They are already suffering and ready to blow, and navigating the VA would push anyone into despair.

I live with ptsd, anxiety and depression, I don't sleep well, can't turn the brain off. I don't get nightmares, but I don't stop thinking. Thank you for this show and teaching me ways to get through this.

I've listened to 2 episodes of The Shawn Ryan show, and I said to myself, I want somebody to interview Shawn. Boom I found this. Absolutely awesome. I've been workin' for a cruise ship company for 13 yrs with limited internet. Normally I can't just sit around and watch youtube...I'm at sea. Because of covid19. I'm "staying at home." It's an excellent opportunity to hear y'all and learn. "I'm a sponge..." yeah, me too. If I see someone and they know something I wanna know, I soak it up. How cool to listen to Marcus interact too. Your book has been so inspirational to me. I'd like tyo see Marcus on The Shawn Ryan show. Thank you for your Service and for sharing your stories.

One of the things I learned even before my transition out of the military was that you have to live life now, not wait to do something until later. I watched my father and father-in-law wait until they were retired at 65 to start doing the things they wanted to do and they both lost to cancer within a couple years. My wife and I immediately booked a trip to go see the great wall of China and we have continued to go on adventures ever since. It forced us to re-prioritize how we looked at life. In doing so we found we embrace challenges verses fear them. You guys rock, keep doing it! so glad I found this channel. Definitely a loyal fan! **Molan Labe

The VA part sums up my experience. I spent 2.5 years in Iraq (mostly Ramadi) on various deployments in a marine infantry unit. It took 3 years for me to get help from the VA. I remember scheduling appointments with this older representative guy at the VA that was supposed to help me with some of the paperwork and he blew me off 3 different times when we set up appointments. I had to drive an hour each time to go see this guy and waited for hours and kept trying to call him and nothing. I didn't get anything done until getting my local congressman involved. Even then, it took another 9 months before I got any real help from the VA.
