I'm back, and I'd like to talk about BSRTs and if/when you should consider getting one.

Gilbert V Do they pay or reimburse? Also do they have a contractual stipulation? Like two years of work upon completion?

DrBr0b0tnik hmm. I believe they both pay and reimburse. I'd talk to HR about it but our incentives are top notch.

Gilbert V That's pretty good. My wife's cousin works for a Dignity hospital and loves it. She was trying to recruit us lol. The only problem is they only had PRN positions at the moment, so its hard to justify moving my family for no guaranteed hours and no benefits. Ill keep an eye out for FT openings.

I believe you have to start of PRN before transitioning to full time with Dignity. However, they will give you a pretty good amount of hours and a whopping hourly rate with no benefits/PTO.

I definitely think we should move towards a BSRT in the future but there needs to be either a grandfathering or grace period for those that only have an AS.

Breathe Easy Agreed. A grace will be very important, and grandfathering is a must to not handicap your existing workforce.

Hey friend. Thank you for your support on passing the boards. Yes, I’m going through the same situation with my licensing. It’s between the NBRC and Florida licensing. Ugh!!!! I feel like I’m the monkey in the middle. As for the bachelor degree, I would say go for it. I’m starting my first class in August. Back to school I go again. 🤦🏾‍♀️ 🙄

It's really irritating when companies post for jobs externally (probably because they're required to) when they knew all along they were just going to hire the internal candidate. I'm starting a 2 year RT program this fall and I'm pretty sure there's no 4 year program offered in my state right now. Not sure how they can realistically mandate 4 year RT programs. Is everyone to go to school online?

I agree about job postings. I mean, usually they;re posted to some sort of intranet for the facility before they get approved for external posting. Again its alright though, there will be more to come. As for 4 year programs, it won't be a harsh transition. That is, they won't just one day say you have to go out of state or whatever to get the degree. I think the online degree completion programs will almost alway exist for those who attend 2 year programs, much like they do now for RN to BSN programs. If projections show future growth for the career field, eventually you will see an proliferation of Brick and Mortar BSRT programs, and perhaps even ABSRT (accelerated) programs as the market dictates, again much like BSNs have now.

How can people find out about where their state stands with that?... I've tried googling it and if course everyone is all for getting a b.a in anything but I want to know for sure.

Olive La Bruja You'd get your best answer from your state chapter for respiratory care. Mine here in Arizona is the AZSRC (AZ Society of Respiratory Care). Next would be your state licencing body. For us in AZ, no requirement for bachelor's, however we're one of a handful of states that won't issue a new license unless you're a RRT.
