To change or not to change a rusty rifle barrel. That is the question.

Sometimes the enemy of good is "Better"
Iron sights, barrel harmonics and old eyes make me wonder if changing the barrel is a good idea. What do you think?

My Geezer tale for today is that the 1 and only time I shot that same model rifle we used surplus WW II ammo as well with similar results. It belongs to a buddy and it was an sobering experience because I couldn't help but admire the men who lugged those things around through the muck of a European war

Sir the Denver M1 ball ammo is corrosive, along with Utah, Eu Claire, and Des Monies. Make sure you clean your rifle after shooting.

I would try and develop a better load with experimentation. The barrel may bet pitted but shows promise. If you should decide to replace the barrel I would search for an original new GI barrel, they can still be found.

You are right Sarco has them. Nice to know. It looks like they come with the front sight base installed as well. Dont know how much reaming needs to be done. Thanks www.sarcoinc.com/1903a3-springfield-barrel-2-groove-gi/

@@ToadleyBrowne hopefully no reaming will be needed. I had a 1903 springfield and an old friend of mine had a 03-A3 barrel (new) laying around in he shop for years and we screwed it on my action and torqued it. The headspace was perfect. Ken

Nicely presented baseline evaluation of the rifle, Toad! I’m on-board for finding one that needs the rehab - I think that one should survive as-is, being that it’s serviceable. I find myself contemplating the same decision with several milsurps. I find the most satisfaction cleaning up the basket cases or previously sporterized samples.

Working on them is half the fun. The 1903 in the earlier video was sporterized as well. It was fun returning it to its original form. With the exception of the C stock. I am looking for another one darn it:)

My vote is to keep it the old barrel. It showed some potential with the hand loads. My question would 1) enough copper fouling help fill in the pitting to smooth it out? 2) I also wonder if running some of the abrasive bullets that are used to help speed up the break in process would help smooth out the bore? Either way I think it’s a sweet mil surp
@ToadleyBrowne
@ToadleyBrowne 3 жыл бұрын
The second group @ 4:00 minutes in was a tease. The bore was clean and the group at 4 minutes was shot after 5 shot group to dial gun in. I believe that fouling would help until it becomes excessive so the window of when good turns bad is not known. The fire lapping bullets have always interested me but have not tried them. Think the gun may shoot better than I do and you are right about it being a sweet gun. Thanks for your comment.

I'm in the new barrel side of the argument. I personally would love to see what a new barrel will do for the old 03-A3. I have had very good success with IMR4064 and IMR4895 in my 03-A3. The 4064 seems to favor heavier bullet weights.

If you plan on using the rifle in competitive service rifle competitions by all means change the barrel, and hopefully the groups would improve, but that it is not a guaranteed result. As a more of a nostalgic range rifle with the occasional trip to the range, leave it the way it is. I would if I owned it give it the good shooter seal of approval. And as you commented hand loads with premium Sierra or Hornady projectiles is the game changer in any rifle.

Toad, contact our friend Big Scott, he put some good money into a new barrel on his and didn't get what ever groups he was hoping for. I'm still using a "better" muzzle loader I got cheap because the bore looked horrible from neglect, but it shoots great.

You could make a rusty flintlock shoot. You are the best all around shooter I know and that is no BS. Regarding the 03 A3 I have to say it was the hardest barrel I have ever removed and at this time my barrel swaps are at around 20. Still waiting for the Covid barrel from cmp just for a project to keep me busy. The gun shot great for (2) five shot groups. After that the SD's were so high it would drop a shot at 100 yards off a 10 inch target with hand loads. Hope you and J are doing well. Thanks for the note:)

My 2 cents, absolutely do not change the barrel. First you already have a ton of accurate rifles. Second the stock shape, bedding, and trigger do not support a new match grade barrel. Clean up the crown, keep the bore clean, then shoot it by holding it tightly into your shoulder. Try a sling in combo with your bags. My guess is the 2 flyers in a 5 shot group with 3 touching is coming from position (hold) not a bad bore. Experiment with seating depth, try 180-190 grain bullets to get more meat closer to the lands in the throat. Enjoy this rifle for what it is.

Just loaded some more to try again. I was happy and sad about that group. Since I just shot away I had no idea of the order until I got back to edit the video. That was definitely shooter influenced error. Hard bolt lift didn't help twisting the gun in the bags. I will try a sling. Obsessing over each gun I own is always enjoyable. You are very smart. Thanks for the comment.:)
