We get many inquiries to rebore, rerifle, and rechamber a rifle barrel. In light of the many inquiries that we receive, requesting the impractical and impossible, it is obviously there is a lot of confusion of what can and cannot be done in this process.
Randy explains what is possible and not possible as well as what is done to get the job done properly.

It is in many cases depending on the barrel. If it's a rare barrel or something then it might make sense. But set up and machining time plus shipping both ways... It can get expensive very quick...

The process works good on rifles that are expensive to rebarrel, rifles with odd contours and odd finishes.Old lever guns, rifles with iron plated stainless barrels or machined integral sight ribs are good candidates. Just remember that you won't be able to chamber a cartridge that is radically different from the current chambering, the feed mechanism and barrel contour dictate the limitations.

I would probably just opt for a new barrel. Although it is funny how a person can develop an attachment to a barrel. My 22/250 was shot out & it took months for me to accept it. I kept saying, “oh no, I will get it shooting tight again, I just need to re-work the load” Finally I had a fresh barrel put on & then I said, “oh that barrel will never be as good as the old one” well guess what ? It’s even better. A good barrel is like an old reliable hound. You just can’t bear to part with em.

I’ve not been talking to people much on Facebook I had open heart surgery triple bypass back in October the 10th and I still ain’t got my strength back I probably won’t from now on. I set and loaded counting the pistol rounds over a 1000 rounds everything from my 9mm up to my 300 Winchester magnum rifle. That was before the bypass surgery. I’ve loaded a few 243 rounds just to have something to do. I’ve got enough ammo I shouldn’t need anymore the rest of my life. I don’t shoot that much anymore to so I’m set up now. Some people just can’t handle the process it takes to load up rounds or work on guns.

Thanks for the information. It may sound unusual but could you therefore re-bore, re-rifle, and re-chamber a .243 to .303 British?. Based on your video I assume this is possible. The rifle in question is a single shot break barrel gun.

@timjohnson2731
@timjohnson2731 Жыл бұрын
The short answer is yes. But why would you want to? They are essentially the same thing. I'm not a Creedmoor guy but the components and ammo are much more attainable than the 260.

Actually, the short answer is no. The case dimensions don't allow it. Thanks for watching.
@timjohnson2731
@timjohnson2731 Жыл бұрын
@The Real Gunsmith I should have been more thorough. You can do it, but you have to "set the barrel back" in order to do it. It's not as simple as just running the reamer in the existing chamber.
@lylewalters909
@lylewalters909 Жыл бұрын
@@timjohnson2731 I reload and I am not a fan of the 6.5 creedmoor. In my opinion the 260 is just as capable if not more and I prefer a faster bullet. The 6.5 creedmoor is fine but again my opinion it's slow. I like a lighter faster cartridge and the 260 is perfect for what I use it for.

Hello: You have been doing this far longer than me so I truly respect you and your knowledge . I enjoy hearing the truth about the issues in the firearms business. I have never had to humanely kill a big game animal over 275 yds. I learned how to stalk as a young lady. Calibre of choice for deer, pig and black bear 3006 180 gr. Nosler partitions. Elk and moose 338 win mag. Nosler partitions. For me it was cheaper to buy a rifle than reborn one but that was my choice. Thanks again.

Any ways it is way cheaper to purchase a new barrel and have it fit by a competent gunsmith. You are much more likely to get the outcome you desire and have more money in your pocket. It only makes sense to rebore, rechamber and re-rifle if it is a collectable and it's value would be grossly diminished by a modern rebarrel. I looked into the idea of a rebore, rechamber, re-rifle 20 years ago and they would not do military barrels, barrels with high nickel content and a long list of other things. It made no sense to me at that point!
@TheRealGunsmith
@TheRealGunsmith Жыл бұрын
If you use a cheap barrel it is, but not if you rebarrel using a quality barrel, such as the ones I recommend. Hart is tops. And yes, there are barrels that can't be rebored, so the only option is rebarrel. Thanks for watching.

This is cheaper and works great. Clients are given the options, and many opt for reboring, rerifling and rechambering. A lot is based on cost, but for many they have a rifle they aren't using that much and want to try something else. This is cost effective way to achieve that. Thanks for watching.

not entirely unusual to do so on drillings. 22 savage to 7x57R is most common there. on bolt actions of various kinds, a new quality barrel is probably smarter, unless the profile of the barrel is very important for some reason or there is value in the rifle like a holland&holland, cheap remingtons or similar scrap metal, not sure if the job is worth it
@TheRealGunsmith
@TheRealGunsmith Жыл бұрын
It is often cheaper, especially since I won't rebarrel with cheap barrels. Top recommendation is Hart for stainless, Douglas Premium Air Gauge for blued chrome-moly. Clients are give the option either way and price. Their call after being given all of the options. Thanks for watching.
