I had a friend that was going to wear clothes that you would wear to a night club to a job interview, I, out of love and friendship told her it would not be appropriate and suggested a white blouse with black or blue pants, she told me it was her interview and she could wear what she wanted, only after her own sister told her the same advice that I gave her did she realize I was right, sometimes it is not the school system that failed you but your own rebellious attitude. How can you criticize someone who simply said, “look your best.” She didn’t say you had to wear designer clothes and appear in full makeup. Just look presentable. We have to overcome so many stereotypes that lead to discrimination. We don’t have to dress and act like one.

The whole problem with this newer generation of blacks is that they can 't even RECOGNIZE when an elder gives excellent advice from a place of LOVE. Everything today is labeled a judgement so that people do not have to be held accountable for poor or even immoral actions.

Someone on IG said it so perfectly, she said, “Dress how you want to be addressed.” There is such power in femininity. If only some women understood that.

It's sad that you have to talk to adults like they're children.

A bonnet is meant to be worn when going to bed, not outside. That’s just being lazy and we all know it. You can wear a scarf and tie it up nicely if you don’t want to do your hair, but I guess that’s too much work for some people.

This is what happens when Respect isn’t taught at home. Our elders are wise, and can see what the younger folks can’t!

I truly understood what Mo was saying. She was absolutely correct!! I’m old school, we were taught how to look presentable at all times. Hats off to Mo!

She told the truth, PERIOD, all the ones that was offended probably go out in places that way.

Perhaps this is someone’s first time hearing this message that “we” were taught. My first year teaching, I had a beautiful black baby in my 2nd grade class. His skin was everything with a smile to match. He was soooo bad! I would get onto him hourly for disrupting class and fighting. One day I decided to get eye level with him and talk to him like a grown up, questioning him and etc. I asked several questions. But the simplest question I asked was, “Do you know right from wrong?” He answered honestly and said, “No.” Digging deeper, I learned that his parents weren’t much older than he was. Digging even deeper, I learned that he had two loving grandmothers. This is where my real expertise came in because I was a grandmother’s baby. I took a chance and called both grandmothers. We sat at the kidney table, me sitting across he and his two grandmothers on each side of him. We talked, prayed, cried, hugged, made a plan and then had another meeting with his parents. Yes, I had to fail him, but on the last day of school, he thanked me like a little man who had gained a foundation of what is right and wrong. You have to meet people where they are. The Bible says the elders should teach the young women. Monique used her platform like she was supposed to. It’s up to each individual to accept or deny her words of wisdom. If you’re given an opportunity to help one person, do so. Love and courage speaks truth regardless of the backlash; being a coward is a sin too. Perhaps, Monique helped one sheep find her way because no one took the time to show her.

My lady would never leave the house with a funky-ass bonnet on! She represents me as I represent her in these streets!

The fact that people are mad at Monique for saying have pride shows u how fucced up this world is.. This is ridiculous

All the women talking shit about her message, were wearing a bonnet when they wrote those messages to Auntie Nicky. So, you know they were big mad...😂😂😂. They couldn't hear the message because they were too busy taking it personal. I tell people all the time..."I tell you the truth because I love you...if I didn't love you, I wouldn't tell you anything. Like Auntie Mo said...people are so used to being mistreated and mishandled, that they don't recognize real love when they see it. 💯

This is the straight truth. When I embraced the counsel of my seniors and the constructive critique of my teachers, my life radically changed. I am from the "hood", as some would derogatorily describe my community. I have never had a father, was born into multi-generational poverty and experienced a slew of other family dysfunctions and addictions. But I overcame all failure when I acted on the positive disruptive wisdom of people who challenged me to transcend my circumstances. Now, I am reaping the intellectual, spiritual, and economical rewards for embracing the counsel that at the time, I DID NOT want to hear. The truth will transform you when you want to grow.

The bottom line is that people these days don’t know how to receive constructive criticism or what to with it, nor do they know what to do with genuine love and kindness...

My mom, “God rest her soul” would get up and get dressed every single day. She was a house wife, didn’t work outside the home, but she would get up get dressed, do her hair, and make her face up every single day. My grandma was a classy woman. She taught me to always look my best whether dressed up or casual. I'm not classy like she was, but I look like somebody when I leave my house. And my daughters too. They are 18 and 20 and they agree with Monique.

I had a Coach tell me “When you leave the house, look like money, look like success”. Meaning put yourself together because you never know who you may meet when your out and about. Don’t limit your opportunities because you are not prepared due to poor presentation of self.

I am so glad for my mother I am 31 years old and I have the “old school” mentality. I wear my own hair, nails and dress for the occasion because of all of the stereotypes placed on black women and ESPECIALLY because I have a son and I am NOT married, the other day my son had a pediatrician appointment & his father tried to go with Air Force ones on I told him no sir that’s not appropriate for the doctors office my son will be represented well at ALL times. He didn’t understand what I was saying until I had a mature conversation with him after the visit. I was raised to be a lady. Every girl will grow up to be a woman very few will be a lady.

Monique said what Big MaMa, Granma, Aunties, Papas, Grandaddy used to say when we had a village. This is when we respected our elders and actually listened to their wise words. The world can change, but we shouldn’t let it change our Foundations! Our village more than any is very much needed. I believe in minding my business, but not to the extent where someone can be hurt physically, spiritually, emotionally and economically. I have been standing with Monique and will continue to do so.
