If there is one hero that powers encumbers freedom and wonder it has to e Spider-Man.
There is a common phrase that goes "makes you feel like......."
we as gamers and escapists, want for that feeling. a experience that allows you to let go and become someone else.
I want to take a look at the history and innovations of the last 2 decades and what I want to use that allows me to escape and allows me to feel like Spider-Man.

"Makes you feel like Spider-Man" to me has real meaning, especially in terms of PS4 game.. "Feel like Spider-Man" - Is when you hear police scanners tell you there's a crime nearby and you just can't ignore it even if you were going on a story mission or to pick up a backpack. In any game I would say "Fuck that, I don't want to do the side activities yet", but not in Spider-Man "Feel like Spider-Man" is when you swing through the city freely, without any fear of smashing into a wall - it's not supposed to be a challenge, it supposed to be freedom. "Feel like Spider-Man" is to feel weight of your every action. Anytime throughout the missions I thought "If I fail, people would die", even if I knew I could always replay the mission

Holy shit I thought I was just weird for feeling like that about the crimes lol. I’m the exact same way, even if I’m on my way to do something else and I kinda don’t wanna stop I can’t bring myself to just ignore it simply because it’s the right thing to do

Another awesome video, I didn't realise how many Spiderman games there have been but it's fascinating to see all the different ideas each one introced over the years. I have played bits of the Insomniac game at a friend's house and there is something so exhilarating about swinging around in it, I think it's one of the few times that the physics of a game has been my favourite part. Also I was not prepared for you to open by talking about the animated series, that was one hell of a nostalgia bomb. I used to watch that show all the time with my brother, it was my introduction to Spiderman and is still one of my favourite interpretations of the character.

My biggest issue with the Insomniac games is that the "Experience" they banked so hard on, was either never present or REALLY inconsistent Also a KEY point MOST people forget when writing Spidey in this century is THE EDGE. Spider-Man was a character made out of ANGER from how the world had treated him. I never related to Spiderman because he had money problems...it was cause he TRIES just like EVERYONE ELSE...he wakes up and TRIES even with all his problems. But writers have forgotten the internal struggle of the orphan boy who was forced into the role of a man when his uncle died

True, which is a detail I really like in the Ultimate Spider-Man game. There, Peter is always complaining about how he could be living a normal life, or how he has to solve all these problems with next to no gratitude. To be honest, I think it's the perfect Spider-Man game

I think the whole feeling like spider man thing started when people started feeling like batman in arkham asylum, it was probably said before but when asylum came out people couldn’t say anything else about it and that continued on and then that went over to spider man. It’s like when people say it’s the dark souls of some genre

While the element of escapism has undoubtedly been a part of Spider-Man for a long time, I don't think it's ever really been the core of the character. For me, the core has always been the sense of responsibility, the way that Peter Parker often feels like he's carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders, and the hard-earned lesson that doing the right thing often demands making sacrifices, but it's worth doing anyways because it makes the world better. I understand that this may be a contentious opinion, but I don't think there's ever been a Spider-Man game that fully succeeded at capturing that core in a way that only a video game could (or at least, none that I've ever played). Most Spider-Man games are designed to focus primarily, or even exclusively, on the escapist elements of the character, while sanding away any element that might make the game less "fun" in the conventional sense. How many Spider-Man games have had cutscenes or dialogue *implying* that Peter Parker is having money problems, or is running late for something, or is worried about disappointing the people he cares about, (or worse, glosses over the existence of these things entirely) only for those concerns to be completely artificial because they don't exist in the actual gameplay at all? Probably most of them, I'd wager. In other words, most Spider-Man games are designed to give the player great power, but virtually no responsibility. Which is why I am (in theory at least) not totally opposed to the idea that TASM2 introduced of there being actual consequences for ignoring crimes, even if that game's execution of the idea left a lot to be desired. I'm not saying Spider-Man games need to be designed like Pathologic or anything, where it's a constant slog of abject misery filled to the brim with Sophie's choices. The element of escapism to Spider-Man doesn't need to go away. But I feel like integrating the core of responsibility into the gameplay, and not just the story, has the potential to create a far richer and more thematically resonant game, and imo it would definitely make the player feel a hell of a lot more like Spider-Man.

-When I played spiderman 2 in the Ps2 and failed a mission where people drowed(Which happened to 10 year old me a lot) I usually had a drepresed swing to the the empire state, contemplated the city before jumping to go to pratolling again. -I ignored a crime once in Spiderman Ps4. For some reason I read the social media in game and felt really bad for the person I ignored, so since them I don't ignore any crime
@EnvyOmicron
@EnvyOmicron Жыл бұрын
@@areacua95 When I play Spider-Man games, I always try to roleplay as Spider-Man by stopping every crime I see, because that's what I think the character would do. But the fact that in most games you can just ignore these crimes and nothing much really happens always felt super weird to me. Spider-Man's whole origin story was about how ignoring just a single random thief cost him the life of his uncle, and how the overwhelming guilt of his not intervening motivates him to save as many people as possible. Making a Spider-Man game where ignoring crimes has no consequence is about as thematically inappropriate in my mind as making a game where you play as Batman, that's also a first person shooter.

In some ways maybe ASM2 the game got that pressure right, being under pressure to get every crime done trying to recreate the huge responsibility he has as spider man

I always had an idea that some events should be a choice between doing a spiderman responsibility or a peter responsibility. Imagine after a cutscene where MJ calls Peter and asks to go on a date, and he says yes. Then when you start swinging there, you get a dispatch saying Rhino is causing a rampage a few blocks down. You now have a choice to either go on the date or stop rhino, both having consequences. If you go on the date, rhino hurts people and there are casualties. If you stop rhino, you stood MJ up and she'll call you and say you're a jerk and POS for not showing, which will impact your relationship with her
@EnvyOmicron
@EnvyOmicron Жыл бұрын
@@puffpuffpassmako I had a similar idea, except I would have it so that both responsibilities are each on a time limit, and if you're fast enough, you could theoretically do both, but *only* if you're fast enough. And then later on in the game you could have not just two, but maybe three or four active responsibilities, and you have to start planning out your routes for how to take care of them as efficiently as possible (kinda like a speedrun), while prioritizing which ones are the most important just in case you can't finish them all on time. You would have to try and keep several plates spinning at once, similar to games like Dead Rising or Majora's Mask, and if it was done well, it could really emulate that feeling of being a 20-something New Yorker overextending themselves in too many directions at once, making you feel more like Spider-Man.

WHERE IS HIS SUPER STRENGHT INSOMNIAC...I CANNOT LOCATE IT😭. I love this video! Your video really portrays your love and passion for this character. I always was a big fan of Spider-man, ever since i watches the Sam Raimi trilogy on the old TV of my grandparents when i was too young to understand half of it. I remember the first time i played The Amazing Spider-Man on my old Xbox 360, it really was a fantastic game. I was young, probably like 8 or 9, but I still loved it so much and it let me feel like Spider-man. Since i didn't own a Playstation, I never played Spider-man PS4. Last month it finally released on PC and i could play it and it really brought me back to the first time i played The Amazing Spider-man. I think i completed it in a week, even though i still have school. Your video really brought me back, and I'll definetely look out for more of your videos!

great video! i do think your take on ultimate spider-man is a little reductive. while the swinging definitely has less momentum, ultimate spider-man's new york is undoubtedly better in my opinion. the map is larger, and contains more unique and defined buildings, neighborhoods, and storefronts. and it's written by brian michael bendis, the writer of the ultimate spider-man comic which the raimi movies borrowed almost EVERYTHING from, as well as every subsequent movie. what it lacks in mechanics, it makes up for in style, story, and tone. Your first task as venom is literally to eat a child, spider-man 2's story is really just an on-rails imitation of the movie. I love spider-man 2, but i will not accept any ultimate spider-man slander

web of shadows is by far the best for this IMO. especially the wii version, which- get this- has motion controls that add a lot to the immersiveness and feel of the game. Sometimes I will just boot that up with no intention to continue the story, literally just to swing around and kick ass. The way that the game designers get YOU, THE PLAYER addicted to the symbiote suit and it's power, just like how peter is, is nothing short of genius game design.

The video is awesome, man! Like I commented in another similar video, I only have one real complaint about PS5 Spider-Man, and it is that it doesn't let you make mistakes with the swinging. I mean, in the Spider-Man 2 game, Ultimate and Web of Shadows the game required you to get used to the swinging system for you being able to move smoothly through the city and not getting smashed into a wall losing all momentum. In the last one that doesn't happen, and every misclick is automatically corrected by the game to make you feel like you did nothing wrong. I mean, it's more accesible for newer players but I think it takes out the little skill you had to put into it in previous games
