And this was the last time Ruyi cried and it wasn't for that jerk emperor, but for the man that truly cared for her and protected her.

During the first episode of this show, the emperor's father, the previous emperor gave him some advice when he was still a prince. He told him that "with every decision you make, there is a benefit and a cost". I have kept that in my mind while watching this show and it makes alot of sense. Every main character that made a particular decision gained some benefit, but ultimately they end up paying a heavy cost.

This is a sadness that you cannot express, it lingers and you can't even cry you can just feel the loss. Ah, the pain is immense. The actress who plays the Empress has completely won over my heart.

I thought Hailan and Rongpei could also be considered soulmates. Now I think about it, Ruyi and Yunche are different. They are the the same soul and person. The same pure heart and integrity.

It is so sad to lose a faithful friend in such a horrible way because of lies. Ling was always there for the Empress and ahe loved his friendship and protection. She will never forgive Hailan or the Emperor.

Ling Yunche was one of my favorite characters...i was sad when he died...he saved Ruyi and Suoxin so many times...i was proud of Ruyi for standing her ground and investigating, refusing to sacrifice him even if it meant her life would be in more danger...and even more proud when she stopped having anything to do with Hailan after she found out she went ahead and sacrificed Ling after Ruyi told her not to do anything brash

I don't get why the King punishes Ruyi so much while he goes so easy on the others. They are worst than her. No wonder she cut her hair and left his ass. She deserved better. Yongji when he died, my heart broke too. He was such a good son. Very loyal to both, his mothers and his father. Freaken Ling.

No love is purer than this.

Ling Yunche is the best example of true nobility, courage, and honor. The emperor has become despotic, cruel, and vindictive to the extreme. Hailan has grown from a weak character who has grown strong enough to ask Ling Yunche for great sacrifice and to honor him by staying until his very last breath. Ling and Hailan together saved Ruyi even though she doesn't see that her plan would have led to more suffering and disgrace for Ling Yunche. One of the saddest episodes in the series.

It's just sad to think that people, no matter how loyal they are, can still be treated as a chess piece. And that remains the same until today, specially in politics. :(

This is why Chinese women team sports compete better internationally than their male compatriots. After 2000 years of imperial system with a harem of wives competing for one ruler's favour made them compete better. It seemed like your chances of surviving a war was higher than surviving in the harem.

I think there is a phrase I do not remember where Ling says to Ruyi or something similar: As well as illuminate your path, so I will illuminate it when you return. For the same reason she was looking at the light through the window, she knew that Ling was waiting for her to return Ling preferred to die because she knew that although Ruyi could prove his innocence, the emperor was already half crazy and would think that Ruyi defended him for something, in addition to all the jealous women who put bad things into him to bring Ruyi down. Ruyi and Ling were united by pain and death would unite them again, for the same reason she stripped herself of everything leaving everything earthly to in a certain way go unattached to heaven.

Hailan was correct when she said, "There are no shortages of people who are in difficult circumstances / had terrible backgrounds and even worse state than Consort Ling. And yet they don't resort to the evil and wicked crimes that she did. *It's an issue of her character and lack of morals and humanity. It has nothing to do with anyone else.* And that one should not make excuses for Consort Ling." Ling Yunche was too kind, perhaps owing to the fact that she was his first love. It's so tragic that it had to end this way for Ling Yunche because of the Emperor's distrust, his arrogance and determination to punish the Empress for his own shortcomings. Hailan and Yunche both knew this and they loved the Empress, so they did whatever they could to save her.

The emperor should have more consideration for others. When he sends servants away to be tortured, he never considered that a mother persevered through severe pain and agony to bring them into the world, so being responsible for harming innocent people is something he should work hard to avoid. He blames others for his sins. He deserves to be with consort Ling.

The way she says "Li yucheng" at the end is probably the part where Ruyi was the most vulnerable and let herself completly to her raw emotions. Zhou Xun is such an incredible actress.

Hailan became wild damn lol. Honestly I love her. She's made an excepcional evolution.

Ling Yuche love is beyond compare. Sad to see this part. I hate the Emperor. I think because of this their empire/monarchy was not able to exists until this age because they govern their hearts and minds with cowardice, selfishness and clamor for so much power.

The sickening thing is that the selfish emperor doesn’t really care for Consort Ling but only the Empress in his twisted way. Because Empress was formerly his first love, he sought to control and force her into submission. It has already been announced throughout the show that the emperor was suspicious of every tiny little thing by almost all of the other major characters, Ruyi included, hence his heinous actions towards every death and punishment that he had sentenced. Spoiler alert for those who haven’t seen the series and are planning to: . . . . . I couldn’t finish this series after seeing the Princess of Former Empress XiaoXian showing up - I knew Princess Hejing was going to help ruin Ruyi and be a stepping stool for Consort Ling. Watching the clips here and there makes me glad that I chose not to finish. I’m sure I would have ripped whatever’s left of my hair out. Even Consort Ling’s end was meh in my opinion; she deserved worse than that. Ling Yunche was one of my favorite characters in the show; his end was cruel and despite Consort Ling being brought to justice at the end, I felt it was not enough to compensate for his sacrifices. I’m glad that Hailan doesn’t die though. She knew how to play this treacherous game and wanted to just protect Ruyi, despite going against Ruyi’s wishes most times behind her back.
