Dark Fired Kentucky is another varietal of fire-cured tobacco, but unlike Latakia, which is smoked over smoldering softwoods, Kentucky is cured over hardwood fires for 14-16 days. Similar to smoking a brisket, this process imbues the leaf with a deep, woody, mesquite flavor, turning it a rich, dark shade of brown. On this episode of Tobacco Selections, Jeremy takes a closer look at the fire-cured leaf we use, discussing everything from its curing process to its individual tasting notes. Tune in for more information about Dark Fired Kentucky, plus tips on home blending and some recommendations from Jeremy's personal cellar.

I love that Bluegrass blend, and had no idea Kasturi was in it. Also G.L. Pease Cumberland is very good. The Ky, Va, Perique medley seems to work really well. The big 3 Rattray’s tobaccos use this combination too.

Very educational thanks. I just tried straight Old dark fires Kentucky from Mac Baren vs straight dark fired Kentucky from D&C. Both very interesting, I found more nicotine and spicyness in the D&C, more difficult to smoke straight, More powerful, and the Mac Baren kind of reminds me More Latakia. Both are great.

Smoking through my first tin of Cumberland and it's really growing on me. I prefer JackKnife, but Cumberland is a little rustic, a bit sweet and a whole lot of stout. Goid stuff!

One of the classic recipes is to mix dark-fired with matured Virginia, and then press and steam and cut into flakes. I assume this is how they made St Bruno for more than a hundred years. Very flavorful, very satisfying with a slow enjoyable burn. Have you experimented with this formula, or are there similar blends in your lineup?

I watched a video from The University of Kentucky yesterday that showed the process. According to that video , most of this Tobacco goes to make moist snuff.

That’s why that stuff has so much nicotine. Way more than regular chewing tobacco, and more than cigarettes too, it just absorbs more slowly into the bloodstream.

As of late smoking pipe has been lacking keeping irish flake in stock have you guys ever thought about a match blend id much rather buy it from you being an American made product using American grown tobacco . Also being from ky and working in tobacco stick cutting/ hanging/striping. Although not dark fired I still take pride in it

Great video and explanation!! I bought a tin of speakeasy a couple months ago and wasn't really hip on it. I smoked 2 bowls yesterday and was amazed at the flavors.. tonight I've had 1 more and am looking forward to the next. I think I found my new favorite blend! Buying more to cellar and hope I make it to 75 when this is suppose to peak...

No, you'll be fine, I would say similar to perique nicotine wise (IMO)

Agree with Holdswath. I would recommend JackKnife Plug to get a good feel for the leaf. It's a bit more stout than Elizabethan, so you may want to start with a small bowl. I think you'll be fine with it.

@@sunset3052 It has a very strong taste so a little bit goes a long way. I would start with a very small amount mix then try and add a bit more if needed. It will also change and may get a bit stronger as it ages so I'd keep that in mind. Hope this helps.
