Oriental is a unique and interesting varietal of small-leafed, sun-cured tobacco that varies considerably in flavor profile depending on the grade, offering notes ranging from bright citrus to deep, earthy spice. It's also the base-leaf from which Latakia is made (after a prolonged period of fire-curing). On this episode of Tobacco Selections, our head blender Jeremy Reeves takes a closer look at our two main grades of Orientals -- Basma (from Greece) and Izmir (from Turkey) -- explaining their individual flavor profiles, as well as how they work together or with other components in a blend. Enjoy!

Jeremy I enjoy your vides and the chat about pressing tobaccos we had at the West Coast Pipe Show. Please consider doing a video reviewing the pressing changes C & D has made to your cake blends and the modifications you are making to bring the cakes backs to the more densely packed cakes you had a few years ago. Thanks 🍭🐓👶

Another interesting video, very informative too. There are alot of turkish/oriental varities and i wish they all get explained but the rare stock and limited supplies render that almost impossible. Fun fact, basma means a smile. Best regards Al janabi

I once got some basma-type oriental leaf from a german tobacco leaf vendor and it smelled and tasted wonderful, very light so you need something stronger to blend with it to use for cigarettes, I used another oriental variety (long dark brown leaves) I got from another vendor that delivered that "throat hit" like strong virginia leaf (which is very hard to get besides virginia orange). But only this basma type leaf had this very aromatic smell that could stand on it's own, thousand times better flavour than the usual perfumy or hay like american blend and virginia cigarettes. I got a new mix of oriental varieties, some look very high quality, like thin leather and others like silk, they smoke and taste smooth but they don't have this special flavour the basma type stuff had.

@@jeremyreeves6425 Hey Jeremy, do you have an european (or even better german) distributor or importer? I love the descriptions and reviews of your tobaccos and would love to smoke them some time. Yes, we have some small and amazing blenders too (HU Tobacco, Pfeifen Hubers „Hausmarke“ house mixtures, who have an amazing Balkan Sobranie 759 successor and HU has the Fayyum Krumble Kake which is almost like a small Penzance and the Epikur plug which was created for a german pipe Forum and is full Virginia for example) but almost all your tobaccos sound like they are perfectly fitting my palate. I hope you had a peacefully thanksgiving with your family in these crazy times. Thank you and best wishes from Germany, Lukas

So are the Basma and Izmir pressed into a brick and aged a bit before being tumbled out into broken flakes? I always thought that the bulk Oriental C & D used looked like it had been pressed. Also, I wonder if the old Egyptian cigarettes that were popular before the first World War had any Latakia in them. I know they were primarily Turkish style cigarettes of the period, just made outside the Ottoman tobacco monopoly. They were made by Greeks usually that had left the restrictive Ottoman Empire. It was and still is these Greeks that were the genius blenders of Oriental tobaccos and the people responsible for Latakia, then and now. Cypress is half Greek half Turkish island. When Syrian Latakia was banned they just picked up and moved a few miles off the coast to the island of Cypress

The plug cutter in that photo is one that I use in the office for slicing up plugs for sampling. It is called "The Plug Cutter" by Daniel Jud of Switzerland. We have had this one a long time and I do not know if Daniel Jud still sells these. Worth looking for on ebay.

Some of the Old Ones blends contain Oriental leaf from Greece called Katerini, and some of the blends contain Kasturi which is sometimes used in cigars.
