two absolutely brilliants in one day!! uncle nigel is such a star. really excellent vocals and guitar playing!! i actually found myself listening more to him than to toby!! he has great timing and musical awareness and i have a sneaky suspicion that he's a major reason as to why toby is so good so young. i would still like to hear father and son playing guitar together or all three of you playing in some sort of jam. that would be mega. good choice of songs. great family vibes here and a lovely sense of fun and enjoyment in playing when these two team up!! happy birthday uncle nigel and it's good to see that your full name has been credited here!! if there's ever a toby lee blues band uncle nigel would surely have to be in it imo!! thanks for this double-helping of blues today i've really enjoyed this sunday special!! 🎶🎸🤗🤗🎸🎶

for "mustang sally" toby if ever you get time check out the amazing raw growling spitting guitar brilliance of a then ten year old nathan gill's live performance (6:27) on yt from back in 2008. it's my all-time favourite version!! that low down mean bluesy distorted sound of nathan's guitar with the long long guitar outro is just a sound to die for imo!!

3.30....best solo I've heard you do yet. There was real sensitivity and some space in there as well as lovely controlled runs which complemented the melody perfectly. Your playing is really maturing as your knowledge and understanding is enabling you to put personality into the music. Well done...a real pleasure to watch you.

Tony Gleeson i absolutely agree with everything you say!! i've played and replayed this so many times now. the solo at 3:30 is exquisite!! often less is more. slow bent note is blues in its purest form imo. i definitely think that in kids there's a tendency towards showmanship and associating skill with playing as many notes as possible as fast as possible!! another young guitarist who seems to think like this is dustin tomsen in germany who recently put out a video of himself just playing faster and faster in three speeds!! i asked him recently if he would consider playing some guitar with his dad who is a guitarist on youtube. he says that he will soon so i'm looking forward to that and hopefully having his dad on with him will lead to some serious playing because he's very talented if not all that prolific in his output but also seems to get a bit giddy at times!! generally gain speed lose feel and without feel blues becomes soulless. perhaps guitaring is like life and you just slow down naturally as you get older!? toby is a very bright kid and still only thirteen. long career ahead of him!! in most instances i'd rather hear him play than some adult guitarist because there's a freshness and almost experimental quality in his playing that I find so musically exciting. only brandon niederauer in the states impresses me as much as toby. it's top of the premier league stuff and i'm following both teams!!

I find it really interesting how his face completely changes when he begins to play. His focus is great. He has very good listening skills and seems to draw inspiration from everyone he plays with. He also has very subtle but effective communication skills - looking at other musicians, nodding, smiling and then waiting with some considerable humility until someone gives him permission to go for it! And then he does.!! I know some don't like his presentation style but to me he comes across as a very bright young lad with good 'in front of the camera' skills and THEN he begins to play. I love it when anyone has clearly 'found their thing' and what he has achieved is a result of hours of work. How great would it be if he hooked up with Avery Molek?

Tony Gleeson it's uncanny!! like you're reading my very own thoughts!! again i agree with everything you say. if you look a little bit more deeply into things it often pays dividends in the form of insights!! i have now listened to toby's "bluest blues" 200 plus times and i'm still amazed by the sheer musical brilliance of his playing of it!! compositionally as well. previously i called him the "young mozart of the guitar"!! i noticed on bb that as you say his face changes and he almost looks a different person at really intense moments of playing. he's "in the zone" as they say and it's beautiful to watch!! concentration is key to success at everything in life!! in so many ways brandon niederauer is the same as toby. one of his youtube videos playing with ghost note and mononeon is described in the header as a "face melting solo"!! i've noticed with toby that even at eight or nine years old if you study his back videos from then like "8yr old blues sensation" or say "happy blues on dad's strat" at 9yrs his playing seems brilliantly smooth and flowing even then!! a lot of my favourite stuff of his comes from this very early "experimental" stage of his musical development. before 8yrs old i've seen nothing at all as i remember. toby must have acquired his "skills" before 8yrs old. but just how good he was at 7yrs 6yrs or even younger still i just don't know. i've seen the video of james bell strumming away on an acoustic guitar in his "video to remind me who i am" at six years old. but i don't know how competently he was playing it. i also noticed that both toby and james had plastic ukuleles when very young. i think that toby's appears in his "red house" video for a small cameo and james has his in some sort of "pirate" video imr. brandon's very early playing doesn't seem as good as toby's. it's more pedestrian and far less fluent imo. it all seems to come together for him at 10 or 11 yrs old. btw the reason for the great nvc between toby and his uncle is i believe that he is at least one of toby's teachers and his "guitar mentor". about avery molek? check out toby lee and john "the stickman" from 2016 playing "sweet child of mine" together in a "collaborative" video if you've not seen it already on youtube. but to be honest i think that i prefer to hear toby's guitaring pure and unadulterated sans drowning drums.
