Sorry to hear you were homeless. I drove a city bus for 9 years in Phoenix and developed a soft spot for the homeless that nobody will do anything about. Because there is no money in it for them. There are more homeless than one can imagine. You just do not see it, unless you are in it like I was with the bus. Never turned away a single one. Especially to and from the soup kitchen. Most of us are on tragedy away from it. Very scary. Glad you climbed out somehow.

I’ve been homeless myself, and I’m sad to say, it is a pretty common misconception that “no one will do anything about it.” Myself and the people I knew habitually chose drugs over the shelter/shelter programs with paths to assisted housing. The shelters and programs required that we undergo drug treatment (and take it seriously) and we chose to get high instead. Once I made the other decision, I owned a home within 4 years of sleeping outside. It’s not that no one will help. We just can’t recognize help when it’s offered sometimes.

I was at the riverport shows right before soldier field. I remember Liberty encore on the last night. They played a bunch of late hunter tunes that summer. I remember seeing Jerry look like the wizard like you described. I had followed the dead for years at that point and I walked out of that amphitheater knowing, for some strange reason, this would be the last time I saw Jerry. I said goodbye leaving that night. Magnificent career and musician.

For a lot of us on tour then, this was the end of those roads we were traveling. I made it to Deer Creek that summer tour , gave my Soldier Field tickets to my friend and headed back east where I was living at the time. My friend was set on seeing every show because somehow he knew Jerry would be leaving us. He just felt it. I thought I would just pick up on winter tour and life would be the same......I was wrong. Man , was I wrong. Life has never been the same.

This song brings a tear to my eye every time I hear it. Hope you'll do more reaction video's in the future and please consider doing a lesson on this song. Certainly one of my favorites as well. I only had the chance to see Jerry and Grateful Dead once on April 4, 1995 the first of two nights in Birmingham, Alabama. I wasn't real familiar with them other than the songs that were always played on local radio, but on a whim my roommates at the time and I decided to go check them out and see why people followed them from town to town. While many long time deadheads consider those 2 nights some of the worse shows, for me it was a magical night. It was such a complete different vibe from all other concerts I had been to and the hippies were great. My roommates didn't dig it as much as I did but I felt like I had finally found my people. The next day I went out and bought One From The Vault, Dead Set, American Beauty and Workingman's Dead based on the recommendation of the store clerk. I think my roommates got a little aggravated when all I wanted to listen to after that night was Grateful Dead.

Great video, Davvy, love it. Love all you do. Really appreciate your love, dedication, humor, talent, and kindness. This song and “Days Between” are two songs from the final years that never fail to move me. Just beautiful. I had the good fortune to catch a few dozen Dead shows in the 80s, and saw a handful in the 90s, as well as some JGB shows and a Bobby show when he toured with Rob Wasserman in the early 90s. I caught my final Dead show in summer of ‘93. Soldier Field, so just about two years before this show. I probably just hadn’t been in the wrong place at the right time before, but it was the first and only show where I saw a heroin overdose. I have to admit, it haunted me for quite a while. Still kind of does. But the band sounded good and put on some great shows that summer. Jerry seemed better - healthier - than he was in ‘95. Everyone who saw him had the same reaction you did, Davvy. They could see it. They knew he was using again, hard, and it was bittersweet that last summer. Such a paradox when news of his death broke. No one was all that surprised but everyone was still shocked and it cut deep. Thanks for keeping the incredible creativity and art of this band alive and fun!

My dad was at this show in 95, he went to a bunch around this time period it was all sold out but he had my aunt who was a senior in hs go to the Ticketmaster and buy 8 tickets for every night somehow and they went with her to her first dead shows, now they go to all the Chicago dead and co shows, and he’s taking me to the one next month in Chicago, my first dead show as an adult, we used to go to gathering of the vibes every year from like 07-2011 and I loved it as a kid.I was luckily raised on the dead, and as a guitarist I’m glad I was.

We loved that they were human, just like us. We learned to embrace our flawed humanity. But these days, all mistakes are hidden. Everyone now lives in Disneyland. So when they encounter a real tiger, they get confused. They don't get why we prefer a mangy, wild, unpredictable tiger over a clean, shiny (plastic) one. You can certainly polish a plastic tiger, but it will still won't do anything new.
