I was watching an interview with Toby Keith he was asked how he came about writing this song. He said he was golfing with Clint Eastwood and asked him how does he do it, how does he keep going? And Clint said, every morning I get up and go outside, I don’t let the old man in. Both fabulous cowboys!!

RIP Toby 😔 I’ve never been a big country music fan. I don’t dislike it, but just wasn’t raised with it. But when I was a Soldier in Iraq, Toby visited our small camp and put on a wonderful show that brightened everyone’s spirits. His willingness to get away from the big venues in Kuwait and Baghdad, where large numbers of Soldiers were stationed, and get out to the smaller, less secure areas, really impressed me. He seemed so down to earth, and was willing to chat with Soldiers about their families, their concerns, or whatever they wanted to talk about. I have a lot of respect for this man and and his music; especially this song.

Met him at a gas station in Oklahoma. I had hurt my hand and couldn't get my gas cap off, I was cussing like a sailor when he walked up and asked if he could give me a hand. I just about fell over. He opened it for me and told me to have a good day. I said thank you thinking I've just had an absolutely fabulous day. Very much a gentleman. Thank you again Toby....RIP heaven got a fabulous man.

What I’ve read about Toby Keith. He’s a Christian, married to the same woman for 40 years and loved being a father to 3 kids. You don’t find many people in that business who can accomplish that. Although your wife and children will miss you terribly, they will be comforted knowing you are with our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

My mom used to play all his music when I was a kid, we went to see Toby Keith at a rodeo, I wish I was old enough to remember. I loved all his music, the sentements, the stories, the laughs, I just found out he died yesterday, found this song today.... Didn't know he was sick, Didn't know this song existed, all within a two days, you hear this, hear about him passing, and it hits like a ton of bricks. I wish I found this song earlier.... Im only a young man, but I'll play this song until the day I die. RIP old man..... you were who I looked up to when I didn't have a father figure, and now your with your father. FLY high Mr. Keith.

I can relate- I am 67 and have always loved country music since 1980. I live in the Dallas area and would always see the billboard signs advertising Toby playing at Winstar in Oklahoma just 45 mins from where I live. I wish had known about him then- now I will learn about his music and discover it even after he is gone. I saw an interview where he said if he did not start to get some some success by the age of 30 he was going to go into another type of work. He was signed to a record label a few days before his 30th birthday. He really deserved that success and he used it to give back to others. Wow. What a humble and talented man. Very sad that he left so young. God bless his family and friends.

This reminds me of my Dad. He was so young. He retired at 65. He lost 70 pounds for the heart problems he wanted to avoid. 3 months later, he was diagnosed with ALS/progressive. He chose to write a no resuscitation note. A month before he turned 66, he got pneumonia and passed away. He was a young man all my life. He had long given up his addictions for the Lord. Great song Toby! 74 years old and lost my wife of 48 years suddenly last September. Was feeling pretty old and lost for a while but want you to know how much this song and video made me think about my life and where I was headed. Was a rough go but doing okay now. I listen to it every morning and it motivates me to be the best I can be. Thanks, Toby!

Toby. This is the story of my life. I am 81 years old and embarking on a new career writing and teaching e-courses in the medical and dental field - an area in which I have been involved for over 20 years. Every morning I wake up, bless what works, ignore what doesn't, walk for an hour along the shores of a beautiful bay, here in Sydney Australia where I live. For me, this is the best line in the song “Ask yourself how old you’d be if you didn’t know the day you were born”. And, when the time comes to 'look out the window and smile, and let the old man in', I'll be ready for that. Thank you for this amazing work.

My friend at work is 73 years old, and he works 10 hour shifts about 4 nights a week. Some of the guys make fun of him for being old, or needing to catch his breath for a minute, and it infuriates me. He unloads freight trucks and stocks merchandise, and what makes me laugh is that he comes to work when guys young enough to be his grandchildren call-off because they're too tired or don't feel good. A 73 year old man shows up 25 year olds. But he don't let the old man in, he stays young at heart and mind.

Janson Gander Janson- I could give you a several similar examples such as you described, but one that comes to mind, several years back with my Flooring company, I employed several hourly installation guys , as well as subcontractors as needed, while working on a rather large commercial apartment complex, I had an older man, slightly slumped over, grey hair, grey beard drive up & ask for a job, this was not uncommon, but the installation of carpet, tile, vinyl can be very physical taxing work, exposure to weather conditions, rather hot or cold, on one’s knees most of the day... back breaking work, definitely a young man’s type work, most of my guys, between 18-26, maybe a couple in 30s-40s, Anyway because I needed extra hands, he seemed like a nice honest guy, and needed the work so I thought I’d give him a chance - over the next 2-3 weeks, I watched him, he was slow, but methodical, always working, slow & steady, I would pull up to job site, while others were taking a long break, I wouldn’t se him, but could hear the steady beat of his hammer, as he nailed down the carpet tack strips. He had trouble with steps, had bad knees, as a Vietnam Veteran he would kindly ask for a day off, later I would find out he had gone to the VA clinic to get an injection or fluid drained from his knees, He never complained, he never laid out, he never said he couldn’t or unwilling to perform any task... I never told him, he wasn’t able to do certain procedures, but tried to delegate the heavy lifting & 2nd , 3rd Floor projects to the younger guys, I let him work as much as he felt he could do, He was a fantastic employee & great overall guy, he was about 68+ I believe when he started with me & worked for me for 5 or 6 years, til one day he told me his wife was making him give it up & slow down. Again, I could give a few more examples of older men out working or out performing guys 1/2 or 1/4 their age, Never give a second thought about hiring an older guy, they will typically surprise you.

So funny story or not, I got in the car and my hubby drove it yesterday to work bc his truck is broke down and when I got in it his Playlist from his phone was playing and this song was on so I got on here to listen to the words and here I sit crying. He was diagnosed with leukemia about a year ago and now last week he was told they will be looking for stomach cancer on his endoscopy. He has always been very fit and active and he's starting to struggle, he went from 70 hour weeks to barely 30 and he was outside after work today and I didnt know what he was doing but realized he weeded our entire flower garden, its a big garden. He says he's feeling so weak and I know he's scared to death about possible stomach cancer but just like he did with leukemia he will never show it and will always do for his family as he's done his entire life!!! They just don't make them like him or Toby anymore!! ❤

Don’t Let The Old Man In The song was written by Toby Keith after spending some time with 88-year-old actor-director-filmmaker, Clint Eastwood. Keith asked Eastwood, “what keeps you going?” and he said, “I get up every day and don't let the old man in.” The rest is history. Keith wrote a song for him called 'Don't Let the Old Man In.’ The song, released today and will be in the new Eastwood movie ‘The Mule,’ which will be released this year on December 14. The Mule is American crime film produced and directed by Clint Eastwood, who also plays the lead role. The screenplay is by Nick Schenk, based on The New York Times article "The Sinaloa Cartel's 90-Year-Old Drug Mule" by Sam Dolnick. The film is based on the true story of Leo Sharp, an award-winning horticulturist and decorated WWII veteran known for his prized daylilies when he was busted for running drugs for Mexico’s Sinaloa Cartel, and sent to prison at the age of 90. He was transporting $3 million worth of cocaine through Michigan in his beat-up old pickup truck when he was arrested by the DEA. Sharp was sentenced to just three years after his lawyer argued that his client’s dementia sent him down the wrong path. As many of you know I'm on the path heading toward my twilight days and times like these really are supportive on this journey...

@@arvindkala5191 Especially since he never had a temper. Just a growl. And a smile. That smile could stop wars. God bless that treasure. He will be missed and leave a gash in everyone's hearts. Not only because of his unforgettable characters, but because of his love for people. My all-time favorite movie of his will always be Gran Torino. Where we saw a war-weathered, curmudgeon shell of a man have life breathed back into him when he met his new neighbors, and gave his life and his beloved car to them. That is growth pure and simple. God knew *EXACTLY* what he was doing when he gave us Clint Eastwood. And I couldn't be more thankful. God bless you Clint Eastwood. Do not go gentle into that good night Dylan Thomas - 1914-1953 Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Though wise men at their end know dark is right, Because their words had forked no lightning they Do not go gentle into that good night. Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way, Do not go gentle into that good night. Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light. And you, my father, there on the sad height, Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray. Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

The problem is whose gonna fill their shoes now. Toby Keith is a 90's era country artist with continued success well into the 2000's. But things have drastically changed. Sure, Chris Stapleton is the best-selling country artist for three years running, but he's an anomaly in the country music market. The mainstream -- i.e., Nashville's industry elites on Music Row -- is populated by the likes of Kane Brown, Kelsea Ballerini, Sam Hunt, Walker Hayes, Florida Georgia Shit, and the latest pop incarnation of Keith Urban, just to name a few. If things don't change at this level, then the Opry and the Hall of Fame are going to irretrievably forsake the proud history of true country music.
@jds2010ful

@@rockpaperscissors82 Point well taken...however, I tend to differ with your comment, "If things don't change at this level, then the Opry and the Hall of Fame are going to irretrievably forsake the proud history of true country music." The 'proud history of true country music' will always be just that. And since it's inception, each generation comes up with it's on version or twist, because it wants it's on identity...just like each generation before it. For example...I recently turned 76, so my generation grew up with the early days of rock'n roll. I still prefer the songs of those days, but doesn't mean I don't like, not all, but some, of today's music...such as ("Millionaire" by Chris Stapleton (Country))...("How Long" by Charlie Puth (pop))...and ("Calling You" by Steve Oliver (Smooth Jazz), and ("Gettin' Jiggy Wit It" by Will Smith (Rap/Hip Hop)), just to mention a few. So I encourage each and everyone reading this to hold on to the music of your generation, but welcome and listen to some of what the current generation is listening to. Yes, you probably will not like a lot of it, but once in a while, bet you just might hear something you do like.
@rockpaperscissors82

I'm 36 and still keep up with what's happening in mainstream music. Yes, each generation will be biased toward its own era. I grew-up with 90's country and 90's alt-rock, and I'm definitely inclined toward that era. But even when I was a kid, I loved to explore what came before. I had a Led Zeppelin poster in my bedroom. But what's happening now in mainstream country music is pathetic and simply Nashville's pursuit of a monogenre, by which Nashville and not NYC/LA benefits. I like Jon Pardi, Eric Church, Luke Combs, Midland, and a few others in the mainstream -- and obviously Chris Stapleton -- but the rest is garbage. The lyrics repeat the same cliches and lack any meaningful narrative. Check out Grady Smith's video for "This beat is killing country music." It's a brilliant video and has over 2 million views already. He gets it.
