This is a good demonstration of just how powerful pipe organs can be in the hands of two talented organists.

I worked next door in Ms. Bish's golf community in Naples, FL. It was like seeing a unicorn in its habitat. She has the carriage of a dancer. Someone worthy of admiration. Relentless discipline and raw talent.

Here are two world recognized, marvelous musicians, of organ fame, playing standard pieces in a non conventional arrangement utilizing pipe and electronic organs in antiphonal style. This takes respect, humility, talent and a very high degree of professional skill. The sonics are a treat, even if the video is dated and faded. Thank you very much indeed for posting this and the other "two organ arrangements." The composers would be delighted if they had been in the audience.

I regard Diane Bish as a National Treasure. Splitting up the music between two Organs, a feat that can only be accomplished by a Master, is what we have come to expect out of Diane. Creative and resourceful. Sit back and let the Master craft a work-of-art. She also Directs, and Arranges. (A pipe Organ and an electronic Organ at the same concert. Novel. I couldn't tell the difference.)

They're two separate organs. The pipe organ is played by Diane Bish and Simon Preston is playing a digital pipeless organ. They are frequently used to stage "battle of the organs" concerts in venues with pipe organs ;-)

I attended Friends University beginning in 1961. As a piano major, I kept hearing stories about an organ student who had studied there with Prof. Dorothy Addy. Among music majors, she was already a legend. Unfortunately, I never had an opportunity to meet her but, her artistry exhibited on these videos illustrates that her reputation from even her first performing occasions is richly deserved!

The first time I heard this song I was hooked. It is still my favorite organ piece. Would love to hear Diane play this on the organ in my church. 20+ foot ceilings, stone floors in a church built in 1755. The organ is a free standing pipe organ made in England by J. Walker & Sons; a tracker organ. Solid mahogany raised panels cover the organ. It is a magnificent instrument.

To those who commented about the need for two organs, and the fact that it sounds like only one playing... Well, until the invention of the electronic machine, the chances of getting two organs together in one room were, well, nil. I have this concert on two discs, and it's done for sheer fun. And it's historic, as you have arguably the finest male (Preston) and female (Bish) organists in the world together in one concert. How often does that happen? It doesn't. Search for their renditions of Widor's "Toccata" and Yon's "Concerto Gregoriano". Same concert. Absolutely outstanding.
@canyoubelievethis2209 жыл бұрын
Agreed 100%. While Simon is an awesome organist, it's kind of sad to see his hands shaking at every moment he is paused to play while little Diane's hands never shake. She seems so easy going and never rushed or in a hurry. Wished I had that style of playing. But as my dad always used to tell me before a concert "you're as cool as a cucumber."

Oh, the actual recording of Bish and Preston in itself is of terrible quality, compared to what it could have been. It was cheaply recorded for a TV program, not a CD. The dynamics are horrible. But the chance to see two great artists in concert trumps the terrible audio. And any church that has two compatible organs is very fortunate.

Hum Hum..... Do you know Bach? He was everything but a B52 pilot! I often go in St Thomas church, Leipzig, i know some Silberman orgel and something is sure/ No noise, no athletism, Nothing like Nascar run of Diane Bish or Carpenter. Bach was not a circus director. Just somebody with a fantastic sensibility!

non.

Logan..so you can play this piece without pistons on a two manual. Well, bully for you. Can you fill concert halls all over the world? Do you have hundreds of works tucked away in your memory and can you improvise without music on virtually anything like Ms Bish? I thought not so keep your zero- piston-two-manual organ for your personal playing pleasure and let us enjoy a master at work, okay?!

Bernard; read the comment from quickfoxes - obviously a musician which you apparently are not. But I was surprised at them using the score - unless it was as a prompt to remind them of who was playing which bits. But - what "deception"? (note spelling).
@22bernd19576 жыл бұрын
I did not like the interpretation either. I have heard many versions of this piece that I like much better than this. I also believe that they made the "pipe" pipe organ sound as close as they can to the electronic organ. I believe they used softer stops more quietly played. The pipes of the pipe organ can tremendous volume and expression. On top of that, we are hearing everything just through a small speaker in our home. A real life experience of an organ is a totally different thing.
@lucieleimbach Жыл бұрын
The tempo is to fast. This takes away from the performance. It would be more pleasing to a persons ears. Sounded like both organs were running together.
@zimnaya6 жыл бұрын
I am surprised at Simon Preston associating himself with such a pointless exercise. And these HUGE titanic organs so beloved in the States - again pointless. The music becomes muddied and "too thick" in texture. The fugue was better than the toccata though, as is often Miss Bish's wont, played too fast.

The idea was to show, despite the blinded imagination and bias of theJakeman789, that a good modern digital organ, cannot be distinguished from the real thing. Also to bring these two great organists and organs together.

Can you play a pipe organ Karlakor? If you cannot then your comment is invalid sir. If you want to learn more I would suggest studying a true master, the late E. Power Biggs.
