BWV 565 Organist Diane Bish plays the Massey Memorial Organ at the Chautauqua Institution, the largest outdoor pipe organ in the world, with 5,640 pipes. The organ was built in Chautauqua's 5,000-seat wooden Amphitheater and was dedicated in 1907. The instrument was a donation from the Massey family of Toronto.

Diane and the environment around her approach dangerously close to absolute perfection. Watching her videos is like entering a portal to a higher dimension.

The reveberation in a live hall or large cathedral adds so much. Lacking in an outdoor instrument.

***** Years ago I was playing Max Reger when a piece of the ceiling came down, loosened by the 32' pedal Bourdon. In organ I most love the way mixture ranks make the notes so "shiny".

Yes, a very essential component of a great organ is also the building it is housed in... it's actually part of the instrument and minus the housing it lacks the essential reverb for sure! It sounds almost dead imho! That does not detract from the wonderful organ playing of Ms. Bish however!

Wife and I were at anotherecital when something fell from the ceiling. Dem 32s be dangerous. Never happened when I play Bach because no 32-foot reed should ever be used in Bach.

This is a very unique rendition of my favorite piece. The middle variations are crisp and nuanced, not something you normally hear , giving it a brighter feel, really lovely. Enjoyed the difference. But as an organist, nothing compares to opening the ranks up on this one.

Tied for my favorite piece of all-time, your version of it helped me stop being intimidated by it. I can see that it is a lot easier than I imagined. On guitar, which I transcribed it for, it is next to impossible. I play keyboard, too, and I SEE what you're doing! Thank you again!

Wow! Awesome. This is such a majestic piece of music, not everyone can do it justice, but Ms. Diane nailed it! This is the tempo I first heard Virgil Fox do this and it definitely fits the outdoor acoustic's. However I have heard this played indoors in a smaller venue at this tempo and some of the low frequency notes get slightly nulled by the long waves running into each other. Plus it's nice to hear the decay between parts indoors, but outdoors it seems to favor this tempo because there is no nulling or dissonance to disturb this wonderful music. I love watching Diane's little feet dancing on those pedals. She might be a small woman, but she is a giant at any keyboard.

The organ is not open to the weather and elements all of the time. Just when it is being played. There is a cover that goes over it, and it is then climate and humidity controlled. However, it does need to be opened for performances, and that certainly does sometimes present some difficulties. They have it well maintained.

According to the Organ Historical Society: Orig. built by the Warren Church Organ Company (Op. unknown), it was twice rebuilt by M. P. Møller Orgelbyggerei, in 1928 and 1972 (MVV 5236), then by Paul E. Fischer Pipe Organ Sales & Service in 1992; as of 1992, it is a four-manual packing 94 ranks controlled by 75 stops.

Outstanding rendition of BWV 565! BTW, what builder and Opus number this organ? It is obviously a fully Classical instrument with no concession to the theatre, unlike Austin Op. 453 at Balboa Park, San Diego, CA, USA, which uses Hope-Jones-based specifications for its Swell, Choir and Solo manual divisions.

I think she did an amazing job on this piece, but I didn't like how she sped up at the very end. It's supposed to be slow, but instead she made it faster. The ending wasn't as triumphant as it should have been, but I did like the last chord.

Bigger is not necessarily better...in fact it usually means the opposite. The sound is muddied and the timing is all over the place. Less showmanship and sequins, and more authenticity would be good. The fugue is too fast and the timing is inconsistent.
