Let me say as a Bahamian, (born, raised and still lives in the Bahamas) it is so true. We don’t have a identity crisis about being black or who we are. No one (NO-ONE) can make us feel inferior. My heart breaks for my black brother and sisters in America who don’t have that. I had the opportunity to move( for work) to the US, last year, and finically it would change my life for the better. But I have a 6 year old beautiful, intelligent black (chocolate ❤️)grandson that I am raising. And I cannot let America shape his identity of who he is. So even though Sir Sidney came from poverty, at that time in the Bahamas. He had already formed an identity. And so when he moved to the US at 15 years old, his identity of self was already established. And money can’t buy that. My grandson attends a private school in the Bahamas with children of all color and backgrounds, he will not have a race (black or white) conversation in his school or community. His identity will not be measured on that, but rather how nice and good people are, and for that, I can’t trade that for no amount money. And so I understand this all to well!

When l heard this point mention l remarked that this is so true. Most of us who were born in the Caribbean and later immigrated to North America or Europe do not have that inferior complex . We are proud of who we are and we can represent at any level. We do not feel inferior to no one. This is so true of myself and all of the people l know .

I started reading biographies in 1982. My very first biography was “This Life by Sidney Poitier”. I read it while riding on a Greyhound bus going to Charleston, South Carolina. The first Sidney Poitier movie I ever saw was “They call me Mr. Tibbs”. The next was “Buck and the Preacher.” Eventually I watch some of his iconic movies on tv. Patch of Blue, To Sir With Love, A Raisin In the Sun, Lillies of the Fields etc. I loved his movies.

Sir Sidney Poiters book; The Measure of A Man was absolutely moving to me in my late twenties when I read it. Especially as someone who is fatherless and an adoptee. Having lost my dad and most recently adopted mom. Now in my early thirties, he’s such an inspiration and I’m looking forward to seeing this documentary.💜

The ( award winning) audio book that HE NARRATED was & is SPECTACULAR ! I have listened to it several times. It is so fresh & full of WISDOM & LOVE every time ! There was nothing like Sidney Poitier ... he changed my life. Loved Him to the core of my being. What a most excellent human being he was. "A Patch Of Blue" needs to be spoken about when his 1967 block buster films are spoken about ...as it was JUST as moving, life changing, socially important & paradigm shifting as each of the other three movies.

Sidney Poitier is one of my favorite actors and I definitely agree that Integrity is the best word to describe him as a person, without having the benefit of ever meeting him. Intriguing to watch and with a captivating voice I learned to admire him from watching his films. Wish people would talk more about his independent work like Brother John which was really powerful to me and something unexpected.

Sherri is so much like her father. She sounds like him and gestures like her father. She should have been an actress if she isn't but closing my eyes, I could hear Mr Poitier. He will always be one our greatest legends!! He was a Legend in his time but will always be remembered for his excellent dignity and contributions to mankind. Oprah is becoming a subtle Dr.Maya Angelou.Angelo's. This interview brought tears to my eyes especially when his daughter said it was like an Amen to a sermon. that was so endearing.

Sidney Poitier, one of my major Speech Influences, was a very 👍 GREAT ACTOR among actors of all ETHNICITIES, CULTURES, INTELLIGENCE and HUMANITY. Born in Florida, United States, of (Bahamian) African parents from the Bahamas, Sidney was blessed with having been raised initially 🙏 among 🙏 people who were overwhelmingly Caribbean Africans - no color barriers or entrapment to countenance, "defend", explain or unwisely to accept. I am about to see him in "The Lost Man", one of my masterpieces in which Sidney Poitier demonstrated eclectic class, second-to-none. Rest In Paradise, Sid.

A truth that many of us will not admit--or don't realize--is that for black people, we want to see one of our own rise up and break the barriers. But, simultaneously, we (some of us, too many of us) are immediately suspicious of the person who achieves what we wanted to see. It's a reflex response, asking how the person did it, and what unholy sacrifice was made, what Faustian bargain. As Oprah says Sidney told her: CARRYING SOMEONE ELSE'S DREAM is fraught with suspicion, derision, and grief.

There was a very good documentary about him here and I don't know if it's the one made by Oprah but it was very detailed . Watching that you see how he was able to make a success of his life but I was shocked to hear that for a couple years due to McCarthyism he actually left stage and film and took regular manual labor type jobs . In that documentary at one point in his career he is being criticized by his own fellow black men ... so that comment he made he really knew what he was talking about .
