In the summer of 1990, a show about an eccentric town in Alaska debuted. “Northern Exposure” went on to become a cult classic. Now TODAY’s Jenna Bush Hager catches up with stars Rob Morrow, Janine Turner and Cynthia Geary as well as creator Joshua Brand, who says, “we knew we had something, and it was special.”

Is it HD quality and do all the seasons have the original soundtrack? On DVDs only the first season has the right songs, all the other ones have generic music instead.
@kimono5484
@kimono5484 4 ай бұрын
@@persereika7401I've never seen the original on TV or the DVD version, but I know that wiki says the DVDs used elevator music and what's streaming is not elevator music. I think it's mostly original music. I watch with closed captioning on always and there were only a couple of times when I noticed that the lyrics on the screen didn't match the lyrics I was hearing, which makes me think that the closed captioning was the original music and they changed the music in those few places.

I'm 61 and I'm not exaggerating when I say this was my favorite show EVER. Funny, quirky, amazing characters, beautiful scenery. Also, the plot wasn't so convoluted (like some of today's shows) that you could just relax and watch. Great acting too. For me, the perfect show...

I was going to write that but a little more cynically, because basically two of the people on the panel are a creator who stole the idea from somebody and a guy who spent half the show trying to get out of his contract. How bad the creators were was that their NEXT show was literally to have, what was it, a doctor in a caribbean location or something. I call that the Star Trek effect, people love the actors but couldn't recognize a writer on the street, and as you say, this was writers, pure and simple. I find that with Star Trek as well, conventions talk to the 'talkiing props' and yet the themes and symbols and metaphors are never discussed. Most of the writers went on to big careers because they were obviously great writers. Sadly when they talked about a reboot all they talked about were the main characters and not even Marilyn. It was very much a group show, even a TINY bit too much about Fleishmann and you'd want the guy eaten by a bear. But yeah, music is always a pain in the butt. For the FIRST run they are always accomodating. I still hold a grudge against Pink Floyd becaues the guy who did WKRP said that they got 17 seconds of "Dogs" for three thousand, but when it came time for syndication they wanted a HUNDRED and three thousand and this was just ten years later. And even now the Shout Factory put together a DVD and the one holdout was Pink Floyd so now the only decent copy of the show has them playing a 'soundalike', and of course nothing 'sounds like' Pink Floyd. This had John Cale, Lyndsey Buckingham, the stones, and on and on, so that would be a small fortune. But I think you can watch it on KZfaq, do people actually watch television anymore?

I’m originally from Calgary Alberta and my wife and were driving through Washington heading back from camping our way thru the state. We realized that we would be driving by Rosalyn so we decided to camp for the night. It was more than 10 years ago but I remember it like yesterday. All the indoor scenes were shot on set but the outdoor scenes were shot in the town. Walking the street... it was surreal and comforting. I loved the show. Walking the streets and taking it in... it was like my field of dreams. When the show was first on, I was Joel’s age ...roughly. Just as messed up... Now that I am social distancing, l am watching my beloved dvds again. Now I am Holling’s age (Irony, I did marry a much younger woman.) and I see the show in a different light. The series was so far ahead of its time and in 2020, it still stands up. It’s art and I am glad it was part of my life.

The next time, I was with the guy Obediah, and other lads we travelled to Regina , that weren't bad, into Montana too, scenic but one place we went to folk didn't wanna know us! Still spending a night on top of a mountain in Banff, with the firewatcher, now that was good, I'm 66 yrs do you still have these folk? Or has technology been introduced? 1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards.

Northern Exposure was a family friendly Twin Peaks with sweetness and optimism. @greyeyed123
@greyeyed123 5 жыл бұрын
If it streams or is converted to blu ray, they will either replace much of the music, or have to pay through the nose to get it...as the contracts were not written with DVDs, streaming, etc, in mind, thus the music was only included for broadcast only. This, I think, is the only reason it hasn't been around much. It would be awesome if other '90s shows like ER made a comeback somewhere on streaming also.

It remains my favorite series that I've ever experienced. Nothing's come close since, although there has been some really good television-- there always is exceptional stuff if you pan for gold. Northern Exposure was so winning and charming and quirky. I loved that it would feature different styles and genres of story telling; one episode might include a fable or fairy tale, another would be an addictive mystery, another would feature a really funny scenario, and another might deal with a tragedy. The show's a gem, no other way to say it.

For the record, Northern Exposure was written about my group of friends and a few other citizens who lived in Seward, Alaska back in the 80's and 90's. Though there are reports the show was based on the people of Talkeetna, AK, I'm witness to the fact that the writers stayed with my friend Maggie (the original Maggie) while they wrote about the people they met and observed in Seward. Chris in the Morning was based on Seward's quirky radio host and now college professor, Kurt Dunbar. Ed was loosely based on a man we affectionately called, Spaceman Bruce...

I can believe it. I played up in Juneau for six weeks back in the late ‘80’s. I lived in Seattle for thirty years. I also played at Janine’s 30th birthday party at her home in Redmond. As they say you either love Alaska or you hate it, there’s no middle ground. I always felt that a writer or others had to have spent some time up there. The first night we were there we had a bear on our front porch. Since I was playing at a club out by the airport called the landing strip I got to know many of the residents. We were picked up at the airport by this guy named Bob. He pulled up in a big 60’s Cadillac. While he was driving us out to the band house he asked us if we wanted a beer. We declined but he had one. I asked him what he did for a living? He said I’m the chief mechanic for Alaskan Airlines. I said so you’re off today? He said no I’m working. Our drummer said they have squirrels up there that are black, weigh 400 pounds and kind of look like a bear. 😆 I’m glad I had the experience but it takes a certain kind of person that wants to live there. If you’re into the outdoors you’ll be OK otherwise you’ll end up an alcoholic.

Even the DVD's are not fully part of the original show. Something about the music that was played. They didn't have the rights when the DVD were released. So am guessing that is the reason why it is not streamed. With Waltons and LHOTP, the music was produced specifically for those shows So no rights had to be acquired.

I'm Scottish. In my teens in the early 90s one channel showed American programmes (shows) like 'Little House', 'The Waltons', 'Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea', 'Time Tunnel', 'Land of the Giants', all on a Sunday, and I watched them all. They took my mind off the knowledge that I had to go to school the next day. 'Northern Exposure' was my favourite, but it was on very late, about 11pm if I remember rightly, on Wednesdays. I haven't seen a single episode since it ended.

@Mac Tex flex capacitor It's not because of the artists or the band, it's because of the record companies and publishers that hold those publishing rights. The artists themselves don't get a say in it. Those publishers only see what money can be made, that's their sole goal, not what is best for everyone. It's why there was such a long wait for the DVD's to release and even and even a question of IF the later seasons would release. It's happened to so many shows from the pre-DVD era. DVD rights weren't a thing when the shows aired, so the publishers decided they could cash in on it. Nowadays it's different but not back then.

I worked on the show from the 7th to the last episode and Janine Turner was even better looking in person than on the show, and had a sweet manner of speaking and smiling at everybody, hard worker, and everybody liked her in the cast and crew alike ... Once, we were at the airstrip and I was the same height as Barry Corbin so was standing in while they lined up the next shot with Janine as they cheated the camera, that is, instead of moving everything 180 degrees to get the opposite actor's view, they just move the camera a few feet so the other actor's background looks different ... standing inches from her face (actors stand unnaturally close to each other to be in frame) I decided to tease her a bit. I said, Ugh ... and she said, I know, I hate cheating ... and that gave me a chance to say, Yeah, I can never keep my story straight, either ... to this, she blushed a little and said: Oh, you MEN! ... with a big smile and I had made her day a little more fun, so it made my day ... You really do stand around a lot waiting for setups ...

My great grandparents and 2nd Great Grandparents lived and raised family there. I did not know this fact at the time in the 1990's, that my musician first husband and myself chose to limit all of our t.v. and movie entertainment to 1 sit com choice each with an occasional VHS rental. We stuck to that for years and kept the same choice each so as to free up time for friends, family and projects. My choice was Northern Exposure. I finally got to visit Cle Elum around 2007, where one of my ancestors is buried. Sadly, I was on a work schedule and did not have time to make it to Roslyn. Of course, I mean to make it back someday to visit all of my ancestors gravesites. And of course I agree with every fan here, that Northern Exposure was magical and a wonderful, relaxing treat to be entertained with each week. Seems I have an extra connection. Perhaps that is why I took my one choice for a sit com to pick Northern Exposure?

Northern Exposure was such a delightful, original show at a time when there was, like today, so much crap programming to wade through. How many reality shows, talk shows, cooking shows, and bad sitcoms can one stand not to mention some of the forgettable series drama shows of the time. Northern Exposure, like MASH, hit a vein in the hearts of a lot of people who endeared themselves to the quirky characters of this series.

I've thought how show business/ Hollywood just so neglects some of the most beautiful faces. I've wondered how both Janine Turner and Cynthia Geary are off into some oblivion.... both so perfectly beautiful... recall the ways of John Corbett wafting into soliloquies... one fascinating character, thoroughly enjoyable... Sue Ann (forgive me, I forget her name) the elder citizen.. she has passed away... Many, many times I've said in writing or to friends there is nothing today (except for Shark Tank, and Columbo 70s reruns, Jeopardy) that I watch/ And here we get to be reminded of the Greatest of all shows ever --- nothing like it anywhere.

That's how shows used to be.. You had shows that represented real life people and nobody complained about their race.. This show had natives with westerners and they just lived with each other, no talking about invasions etc.. So many shows were like that.. But it all changed around 7 years ago during Obama when everything was polticol and everything became about race.... Watch the show "The Pretender" which is about the most feel good action show every made.. Just look into lots of shows from back then.. I have given up on knew shows now becsue of the poltics so now I just buy other shows and watch them.. Now I get joy from watching shows like I used to instead of getting mad at the rubbish they insert.
