2 things I noticed about your windows... 1=typically I would not put the peel and stick across the bottom as you have done because it may tend to hold water. Usually that bottom layer is just a couple inches inside your framing on the bottom. 2- I also would run the right and left pieces of trim flush at the top but down to the length of your bottom trim also to prevent possible water intrusion so you have a vertical seam not a horizontal seam. Just a suggestion from a carpenter with over 35 years of experience

Yes, when the side piece would come down on top of a horizontal sill, the horizontal piece should be sloped for drainage, so the bottom of the vertical piece would be cut to the slope. A horizontal butt joint should be t&g, shiplap, z-flashed, etc... If not sloped.

Agree on point two, but even mfg instructions for Andersen 400 series say a drainage method or a sealed method are both okay. I prefer sealed for a tighter building envelope

Nice job, except that wouldn't pass up here in Canada. We require the top trim to be double flashed. One flashing directly above the window, and the second above the trim. All flashing ends also require an end dam to prevent wind driving water behind the trim. I also seal the backside of the trim with primer/sealer. Also, it's better to have the trim prouder than 1/16", that way your caulking will have more wood to stick to. Hardie recommends to extend the side trim all the way to the bottom of the bottom window trim, and not the top like you did. Reason for that is to prevent standing water to get into the end grain of the side trim. Cheers.

So no one's going to mention how the first piece of trim shifts upward when he goes to grab the gun, and he nails it in anyway, making like a 3/16" gap at the bottom right corner. Then goes on to give advice "If it sucks, tear it off and redo it. Don't be scared to fix your mistakes. Don't live with a crappy job..." BUT LEAVES THE GAP! It's so big, you can still see it when the camera is 30 feet away from the house!

Why on earth would you not use 5/4" trim instead of the extra step of shimming? The bottom joint should always be vertical, not horizontal. I have trimmed hundreds of openings such as this, and always joint them on a bench with pocket screws, as perimeter plains are never perfect, then the joints are always perfect. The back side, against window are always back cut to allow for nailing fins. But, everyone does it differently.

They make that same trim 1" thick. You would avoid having to shim like that, other than maybe to offset the thickness of the nailing fin.

Construction adhesive?? I don’t think so , how about silicon like every contractor has done for the last 40yrs. You should have used a pocket screw tool to join the window casing as a unit. Joints would line up better and could be made water tight.

you should run the side boards past the bottom of the widow frame 3.5'' and the set your bottom between the side boards so water has a place to run out and does not lay on the sill

As you do this job more you will see there was a few small mistakes….the tape has been pointed out. The directions of your seams on the trim will s also wrong and that product requires a metal flashing at the top of the window. Even a little standing water will wreck that product over time I have seen it in as little as thee Years swell up and crumble

Ok ... wow...check that big old gap there at 5 and 23 seconds... tear it and redo it... but wait for the glue to cure first... I do however like the top trim a tad bigger ... nice touch

Looks like your flashing tape sits under the window flange instead of on top of it, like you flashed the rough opening and then installed the window instead of installing the window and then flashing around it as is the normal practice.

Totally random question.....before winter I want to fill in cracks in my sidewalk, where the sidewalk meets the house, and a crack in my garage. So confusing on what is best to use. I see there is a self leveling but someone told me it is really runny. Any advice?
@TodaysTask
@TodaysTask 4 жыл бұрын
I have never used them myself, but I know that they are super sticky, co you need to run masking tape along Bothe sides of the crack, and then peal it off after the leveling has settled but before it cures. Hope this helps

I have that nail gun and tried putting up that trim with hot dipped ring shank nails, my gun bends and jams the nails and they will not go through the trim. What nails are you using on the trim?
@TodaysTask

Galv ring shank, they are a metabo nails. I ran into a few that did that. Make sure your gun is lubricated and check to make sure there are no burs on the firing hammer and slide where they come out of.

I am curious why builders don't miter the trim around the windows. I have seen this same style in my area and call me weird, but I am just not a fan of it. NO hate to you and your channel, I did learn a lot from this video. I just am curious why I don't see the miter look on exterior trim that often.
@TodaysTask
@TodaysTask 3 жыл бұрын
I think it's because getting the miters to line up on what could be an out of square corner is very difficult and time consuming.... Good on those that can do them.

Hi Joel when redoing a roof do you recommend taking the old shingles off im just asking because I know someone who had there roof done and they just put the new ones o we the old ones?
@TodaysTask
@TodaysTask 4 жыл бұрын
It depends on your building codes, I think you can only stack one set of shingles. so if there are already two sets you will need to take them back to the wood and apply new tar paper and frost seal. Good luck
