Todd ranks the state DOT's signage in 8 Northwestern states. Watch as he counts down and gets increasingly more annoyed. Control City Freak is updated weekly and covers every two digit Interstate Highway in America. I'll be showing control city signs on each 1 and 2 digit (2di) Interstate Highway in the continental United States and will strive to make as complete a record as possible. I'll also be getting into the roadgeek weeds here and there, showing downtown skylines and state border crossings, and making corny jokes. I welcome all to join my geeky tour of every primary Interstate in the country!

US-395 should interchanges instead of intersections between I-82 in Kennewick Washington and I-90 in Ritzville Washington for 100 miles. Not too sure if they will upgrade to interstate highway as of future I-9. I heard that there are too many accidents on US-395 north of I-82, north of Kennewick Washington.

Not sure if you've started on the I-96 video yet, but here are some important junctions to cover: - US-31 in Muskegon, where I-96's western terminus is - US-131 in Grand Rapids, part of which is actually unsigned I-296 - US-23 in Brighton - US-24 (Telegraph Road), which is the western boundary of the city of Detroit - M-39 (Southfield Freeway), which connects to the Northern and Southern suburbs of Detroit, including Dearborn where Ford Motor Co. Headquarters is. - Exit 186B for Davison Ave, which leads to M-8, the Davison Freeway, which was the nation's first urban depressed freeway, completed in 1942. I was surprised that you didn't cover it in the I-75 video, as that's where the main exit for it is. Also be sure to include photos of the Local and Express lanes of I-96 in Detroit. It's HUGE. And I was wondering if in the westbound I-94 video you could cover Exit 215, the Lodge Freeway (M-10), which was the first completed interchange between freeways in the country. I feel it's a very historically significant one to cover. It used to be US-10 until 1987. Well, I can't wait to see the Westbound I-94 video. Am wondering if you plan to cover Michigan Stadium and Crisler Arena in that video as I was wondering what your thoughts were on Harbaugh's progress with Michigan football and the status of Michigan's basketball program.

If we explore U.S. Routes later, I think it’ll be interesting to see how the “control city” criteria changes. My personal method for Interstates (more than 50k urban area) seems to be good (for the most part), but it obviously won’t work the same for, say, U.S. 50 along the Loneliest Highway. Provo as the bottom line all the way from Carson City just isn’t feasible. Using my local U.S. Routes as a guide, my criteria for controls is a) if the highway has a freeway-esque feel and/or b) if there’s a (relative to the area) high frequency of traffic lights. The I 580 exit for U.S. 50 East in Carson City has Dayton and Fallon as the controls (Dayton has a couple traffic lights along the highway, and Fallon is the de-facto hub of Central Nevada). U.S. 50 West (a continuation of I 580 after the freeway ends in the southernmost part of Carson City) is signed for South Lake Tahoe (the largest city in a popular year-round destination). U.S. 395 North leaving Reno has Susanville as the control, and headed south from the Carson Valley (extending 15 miles south of Carson City) is Bishop. Along Interstates, Nevada seems to be considered among the best signed states. Does it also apply to U.S. Routes?

I think Idaho's worst signage is on 84. Could be a think with the two districts that cover that area, but they do a much better job on 90 and 15 imo. The two control cities aren't really that bad. they still have the main city on there so it's not really that big of a deal

You know, Todd, about I-5 in Washington State, in Salmon Creek, WA (Vancouver, WA suburb), where it meets I-205 OR-WA, I'll sign both Olympia and Seattle. Also, in Tacoma, WA, while meeting I-705 and WA 7, I'll sign Olympia and Portland there. Here's why I sign Olympia as a secondary because it's the capital of Washington State and again, for me, signing a state capital is very important.

6:47 as a (somewhat) local, I think all of these signs are quite good given the size of the region, maybe Pendleton-Portland would be better for 82, but that’s a stretch. Pendleton is incredibly important as a junction and an Oregon trail town, and Boise is a little far, so I think Pendleton-Portland is smarter, especially since if you have Boise why not put bend on the list? Other than that for Washington/Oregon I agree, also South for Vancouver wa is fine I think but only past Olympia, also 405 should prolly just be Bellevue. Also Tacoma is much further from the 405 than Everett. Extra stuff I notice: Also I like 84 west Nampa, but agree portland or Pendleton should be under it Twin falls is probably signed since coming from portland-salt lake (I’ve even done Seattle - salt lake like this) it’s a perfect halfway point to stop, same with salt lake-Boise, it’s just well placed for trucking and general trips Also the Nebraska thing with Sidney seems okay to me, as long as it’s not the ONLY control city, but I haven’t been there so I can’t say for sure Also I have never really had a problem with Oregon’s signage except for going into California (like Ashland). The signage on I-84 is fine, the baker city stuff is weird but not too bad. The US-95 stuff and US-30 stuff is fine. Going into and out of Bend the signage is fine, even the Madrass stuff since it’s the only thing. Portland and I-205 is ok. Also Medford is better North I feel, it’s way too important for such a small route, I wouldn’t mind a bottom line portland, but I think Medford is better than just portland. Also east Pendleton is better I feel, but it should be Pendleton-Boise, Pendleton is an important junction, especially if going Boise-Seattle.

This video only addresses a few I-15 signs, so I am sharing my thoughts: Idaho: Good: mileage signs that have Blackfoot, Pocatello, and Salt Lake. Mileage signs with Pocatello, Twin Falls, and Salt Lake. Overhead sign with Pocatello and Salt Lake. Bad: Mileage sign with Idaho Falls, Dubois, and Butte. Dubois doesn’t even have 1,000 residents, and Butte is smaller than Rexburg. After Blackfoot, mileage signs should have Rexburg and something that tells people how far they are from Yellowstone Montana: Good: having mileage to Lethbridge Bad: not telling us that Lethbridge is in Canada. Maybe it should be “Lethbridge, AB”

I figured out what Washington is doing with deciding which Tri-City to sign. Basically, the first city the route in question enters is what is signed. If entering from I 82 eastbound to I 182 eastbound, Richland is the first Tri-City. From I 82 W to U.S. 395 N, Kennewick is the first one. And if entering from U.S. 12 W or U.S. 395 S, Pasco is the first one. In all honesty, this system is far from bad. If one city were significantly larger than the other two, then the significantly larger one should be signed for ALL entrances. But that is not the case here at all. According to World Population Review, Kennewick is currently the biggest at 87k, with a growth rate of just over 1% per year. Pasco is currently 82k with a growth of just over 2%. Richland is currently 64k with a growth of just under 2%. This means that while Kennewick is the biggest Tri-City right NOW, it’s not guaranteed to remain the biggest one for long.

I'm not super experienced, but I think the problem with Nebraska Signage is they prioritize their smaller cities more than the larger ones. For example, going west straight outta Lincoln, I'd sign for Denver and Cheyenne as Bottom Line and Secondary and then whatever city is up next, but Nebraska signs all their cities right away. Same way for going Eastbound, we get more signage for smaller cities than not, and this is also a problem in Colorado and Wyoming. In Denver, I'd sign 76 East Lincoln/Omaha. 80 eastbound into Nebraska from Wyoming is perfect. Most Nebraska signage is also out of the state as well. Iowa, SD, and Missouri are godawful when signing cities. Instead of 29 north or south Council Bluffs it should be Omaha-CB. 80 west from Iowa should also be Omaha and just Omaha which I see Iowa is starting to change. Just my take

Yeah Nebraska is very inconsistent. Much like California,Texas,Florida & New Hampshire. What’s interesting is that I’ve seen them mention Denver & Cheyenne west of Lincoln sometimes.

Having Oregon below Wyoming was a surprise, but I’ve been saying for a while that it should be among the 10 worst signed states. And what is infuriating is that, along rural highway, Oregon can do some S-tier signage. For example, headed south on U.S. 97 leaving Bend, a junction for OR 31 advertises that the route leads to my hometown of Reno. And mileage signs along the highway constantly list Reno as the bottom line, so it isn’t just a one off that is immediately forgotten. Considering Reno is TWO states away at this point, and OR 31 doesn’t even reach the Oregon-California border, this may be one of the best signed rural highways possible. Meanwhile, at an Interstate junction, the only two possible Oregon cities that could be signed are used instead of one of two cities of 80k apiece (or even their smaller 52k component)? My only real complaint is in Idaho’s ranking. Among the 8 states ranked, I’d probably have it 5th as well, but I think it’s closer in quality to Washington than Nebraska. The west end of I 184 is really the only black eye the state has (much like Ellensburg leaving Yakima is Washington’s only real black eye).

I agree that signing 84 for places it doesn’t go makes no sense, but since more Idahoans are driving to Pocatello than SLC, I think the solution is to redesignate 86 as 384, so that signing its control cities on 84 makes sense Also why does a X0 interstate like 90 go through the middle of nowhere? Shouldn’t 94 from Billings to Tomah, Wisconsin be I-90 while I-90 from Buffalo, Wyoming to Tomah, Wisconsin gets signed as I-86, and Buffalo to Billings gets signed as I-25?
@benjaminchandler7919
@benjaminchandler7919 Жыл бұрын
Alternatively they could make 212 from Rapid City to Billings an interstate and have it be I-90 and then have Rapid City to Buffalo be part of a new I-86 that goes from Rapid City to Cody, WY
@ControlCityFreak
@ControlCityFreak Жыл бұрын
That seems like a good way. Wonder why that wasn't the route. Heavy lobbying from Sheridan and Buffalo?
@benjaminchandler7919
@benjaminchandler7919 Жыл бұрын
The alternative might be better simply because South Dakota is north of I-88 in Illinois. Of course that can be dealt with by redesignating it as I-86 and I-90 though the plains states as I-88, but I’m not sure that’s necessary to do, especially since more Montana traffic is going to Mt. Rushmore than Bismarck, but we should definitely make the fastest route there an interstate and the route between Mt. Rushmore and Yellowstone I-86
@benjaminchandler7919
@benjaminchandler7919 Жыл бұрын
@@ControlCityFreak probably because Sheridan and Gillette are bigger than anything on 212, and because building along 16 from Buffalo to Gillette is less expensive than building along 14 from Sheridan to Gillette? Definitely don’t like it though. They should upgrade 212 to interstate standards and reroute I-90 through it and then redesignate the route from Rapid City to buffalo as I-86 and connect it with Idaho’s by upgrading US 20 and US 14 ALT to interstate standards. Especially since US 20 is already up to interstate standards in Rigby and Rexburg
@benjaminchandler7919
@benjaminchandler7919 Жыл бұрын
And about control city signage, extending I-25 to the junction with 212 would allow Montana to sign Cheyenne. Additionally, Idaho already signs Pocatello on US 20 west from Rexburg to IF, and Twin Falls as a secondary on mileage signs between Pocatello and Blackfoot. Wyoming should use Cody and Sheridan as secondaries with Yellowstone and Mt. Rushmore as primaries
