Todd is truly a drummer that amazing technically but he is musical with his playing as well. Also he switches from one "feel" to the next so seamlessly and makes it looks so damn easy. Love this dudes playing.

"Please this lick is not a toy, so use it well". That's not only a hilarious statement, but it defines what this "Lesson" is all about. He's just showing players that know how to play it, how to play it in more then one way and not get carried away with playing it in one way and ruining it for everyone!

He is so amazing. I saw him in a clinic last year, his solo's are second to none. Blew the whole room away. He's a really cool guy too, got to take a picure with him and he signed my methods & mechanics 2 dvd.

Thanks Todd, thanks for clarifying an old lick that's been a favorite of mine for years and I was always mystified by it when I heard Tony Williams do it with Lifetime and Steve Smith on the Vital Information album and in clinic. I love the projectile vomit analogy too... very true if not used wisely.

Todd is my fav drummer. He is so well rounded in playing different styles and has such a solid groove and great chops and with his feet too. So much more versatile than we see with Styx, I hope one day soon we see him playing in some sort of fusion band when he's ready to take a break with Styx.

"However you wanna stick it"....Hmm. Todd is a cool down to earth, bad ass drummer. Sucherman, seems very genuine to me. I love his sense a humor. Drummers, need to check their egos and find a sense of humor. Even Thomas Lang said he don't take himself seriously, yet he's serious about the craft.

@WGIfan also licks, at least in the drumset world (dunno about drum corps) are much more than what's written on the page. the history and stylistic approach make it much more than a sterile "swiss flam drag."

@WGIfan I think it's because some of these hybrid rudiment stuff are used only for snare drumming. So I guess the history was just who are the ones that applied it to the kit and made the lick famous. No idea where the name came from, just that it's like a onomatopoeia way of naming it.

@Tristnator4 I feel like even then you couldn't judge him as a teacher because you aren't having like a one on one with him where his goal is actually to TEACH, you know? I can say, after watching a lot of this DVD I have learned more about playing drums, both in being a better musician and learning some amazing new sticking ideas, than from a majority of the teachers I've had. You have to do a lot of work yourself too to make the most of his DVD I think..

Nice video and Todd is a great drummer, but it would be nice if he broke the lick down and showed how to learn it instead of just demonstrating how well he can play it and how many variations of it he knows.
@DeanWuksta
@DeanWuksta 7 жыл бұрын
Daniel Casher he started with the premise that he wanted to demonstrate its variations to drummers that already understood the lick. He possibly made a reference to Steve Holmes at the end there where he said 'it's not a toy' whom also did a great video on this lick, he breaks it down to the bare bones too. It's likened to a flammed paradiddle diddle, with some Swiss triplet thrown in.

Watch Gavin Harrison's video on the blushda, too. He applies it in some of the best ways I've ever heard (and some of the only!). The sticking is: Flam, double right, left. It's a swiss army triplet with a double on the right hand (or left, depending on which hand you're leading with).
