Features I like about this radio:
Superb Weather Band reception.
Simple controls.
Nice Mid Range audio from the Speaker.
FM Reception is decent, with great reception on Locals/Semi Locals.
AM Reception is very sensistive.
Headphone jack is an easy listening experience with minimal noise.
Runs on Three D Cells.
AC power is an option with included cord of high quality.
No RFI when using AC.
Back Grip.
Nice handle.
Antenna swivels 360 degrees.
Features that could be added or improved on:
Improve selectivity on the FM and AM bands.
Add a power/tuning LED indicator.
Increase dial visibility.
Overall, with this radio under $30, there is not much that competes with it for overall function in a new radio. There are some that try and fail, this one will hold it's own.

As a follow-up to this post, a representative from Prunus contacted me by email. She advised me that she would send me a replacement radio. I have not heard or received anything. I told her I did not want to have to return 2 of their radios if the tuning scale is off once again. Nice that they did offer. Very good gesture!!

It`s probably a good thing that I have little money or I`d have hundreds of radios. LOL! I have 9 now and need to stop buying them. I just got the Sony ICFP26 and got lucky and got one that`s very sensitive on AM. I`ve been leaving it on while I sleep and using it a lot while awake since Feb 9th and the batteries are still strong. Amazing!

@@todderbert I think it`s more than 100 hours. I wish there was a local AM station that I could get 24/7 so I could put batteries in it and just leave it on and see exactly how long it will run. On the next set of batteries I`m gonna keep an accurate log of the run time. By now I know for a fact that I`ve used it well over 100 hours and the green LED is still bright. Do you have a schematic for the Sony? If the volume pot fails I want to repair it even if I have to hot glue a new one to the outside of the case. I hear they fail far too quickly. Do you think the value of the pot is identified inside the radio? I can`t find a single clue online and have given up. I think the radio will last for years if I could replace that one part.

@@tomjones239 The volume pot is probably a simple design with the wipers on the knob. I have seen this in Walkmans. You just have to remove the knob carefully and adjust them. They can become bent with heavy use. If your careful, you should have no problem.

Todd, I ordered and received the Prunus J-015 after seeing your review. Saved five bucks with the coupon your provided. Thanks! A good value. A few observations compared to the Retekus TR604 I ordered a little earlier.The Prunus red bar in the dial is hard to see, even in the day!The Prunus sounds a little tinny to me. I wish it had a bass-treble switch. Guess that would add some bucks. The Retekus would be unlistenable if it only had the treble. The front of the radio with the frequencies appears to be nothing more than a decal on the inside of the plastic. OK, minor quality looking gripe. I like the longer dial span of the Retekus, but I was surprised that the Prunus still separated lot of stations -if you linger. Don't know how that works.. ?Thanks for the great reviews.Robert in Nashville

You recommended this I'll be buying this probably after lockdown ends in India. Please do review of philips radios. There are several that are on sale on amazon india and are super cheap and they have SW bands

The first thing I thought, another Sony😁. Obviously made exclusively for the North American market. Cool. With everyone saying “Radio is a thing of the past “, there sure are a lot of radios out there - which means there is a good market for radios. Though I wish they would make them a bit better, more sensitive. But ......( typical DSP tuning). I’m still not sold on these DSP-analog radios. But , it does what it is supposed to do, and I like the big batteries for long run time. As always, great review. 📻🙂

I purchased this radio using the supplied discount code - thanks. I received this radio and was eager to try it out. It was packaged nicely, with bubble wrap around the radio within the box. The front of the radio looks nicely done, especially the metal grill. I was less impressed with the fit & finish on the sides of the radio and the back. I put in three 'D' cells and powered it on -- nothing! :( That's okay, that sometimes happens, but the real turnoff of this radio is the tuning know -- it wobbles more than Weeble Wobbles, and I found that I no-go for me personally. In my opinion, I think if you want a dual-power radio, the Panasonic RF-2400d would be money better spent, given that they are essentially the same price. If you want a 'D' cell powered radio, the Sony ICF-19 is the way to go; its fit & finish are FAR superior given that they are within the same ballpark price wise. Needless to say, the radio is on its way back to AMZ. That would've been the case despite it being DOA.

I just found out that there is a terminal issue with the positive side not connecting to the tip of the battery. I was swapping batteries and noticed this. I bent the positive "spring" terminal out some so it would make the connection. I found another radio similar and will be reviewing it shortly. I am finding that the Sony and Panasonics are great quality DSP radios, but I am also glad Prunus and other companies are trying for better quality units at a lower price.

A representative from Prunus reached out to me and offered to replace my defective unit. Their customer support is top-notch, eager to make things right! The new unit's fit and finish was improved on the sides and back, unlike my prior unit. The handle is a nice addition as compared to my Sony ICF-19, which only comes with a provided shoulder strap. I put in the exact same batteries as before and this time the radio powered up! The audio sounds good on FM as well as AM and my wife was able to receive her favorite station that is notoriously difficult for radios to receive in our house. I didn't go through the entire AM band, but I did pick up stations in IL and GA from my QTH in NC. The tuning knob isn't nearly as wobbly as the previous unit, but it is kinda rough while tuning; perhaps it will settle in with use? I did find the volume range to be somewhat short, with it going from on to distortingly loud in a very small turning range. Overall, it is an okay radio for the kitchen or garage that is tuned to a fixed station with the added benefit of weather band. For band scanning, I'd prefer using another radio however due to the relative roughness of the tuning dial.

One thing missing on these is tone controls. How is the audio on this? Notice a lot more mellow than the little one you have there to check the frequency.

Looks like, by judging the locations of controls, the Prunus radio and the Sony must be based on a same design.

Nice comprehensive review. I received this radio yesterday. At this price point, it has very nice construction. The tuner scale is off, sadley. 101.5 is closer to 103.0 on mine. I noticed in your video, the scale is off as well. The station is once again higher on the scale. I want to return it for this reason. Bugs me. I have messaged Prunus. I am waiting for a response. Sound quality is great. The Sony, obviously is a nicer choice. If the scale was correct, it would be a keeper. I only gave it a 2 star rating. It sounds ok, but I do not want to "fish" for stations. Thanks again for the review!!

I am always on the hunt for the perfect DSP radio, and the EP-Pro is my favorite so far. The Sony 506/19 and Panasonic 2400D also do a fine job.

So should I buy this I want to reach as many MLB broadcasts as I can I don’t have lotsa cash I’m 14 and using my own beans. Forty bucks is my limit.

If it needs to be new, the Panasonic RF-2400D is a worthy choice kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e9V5hrmLnLylhoU.html . I prefer the Sony ICF-19, but it runs on D Cells only, no AC option kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mJOniruj3qvKlWw.html . Links to the radios are in the video descriptions. They average around $30. If your budget allowed you a few extra bucks the Sony 506 is a good choice with an AC option kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gcBiiLR8p5bVcoE.html .

wataru kuriki PRUNUS J-05 RECEIVES 162.400 MHz - 162.550 MHz. It only use Narrow Band FM for Weather Band. Unlike USA Sony AM/FM/TV/WEATHER BAND that Weather Band receives only in FM broadcast mode. Weather Band are only available in Guam, Saipan, USA and it’s territories, Canada, Mexico and Bermuda. In some countries, WEATHER BAND also used as taxi or commercial radio services it depends on their location.
