I was born into mormonism and it was a large part of my identity. it was everything i had planned on in life and influenced my ever decision. It is so incredibly difficult to sever yourself from the LDS church in ways many people wouldn't understand without living the experience. as someone who recently escaped that abuse that i was born into, hearing you explain it with rational thoughts about the beginnings i am reminded how fully i was indoctrinated to truly believe this and "know" it was true for so so long. As someone who is currently being ostracized and demonized by my still very believing family, i have feelings of releif and so much pain. For those who are still in the church, i wish peace on you and hope that you see through clear eyes one day. and for those who know the pain of having such a profound part of your identity shatter when you realize the reality of the mormon church, i'm sorry and i get it now.

Probably should have been a bit more factual. J.S. wasn't alive in 1943 and he died on site, not months later. However, he was a horrible man. The men that lead the church now, have to be as bad because there is NO WAY they don't know the truth. All u have to do is pull up the history ( which is not advised, by the leaders) in a very short time, YOU KNOW. I wasted 33 years of my life..... Living the lie called Mormonism. I remember when I was younger. 2 Mormon missionaries one was American the other Canadian and they called on my friends dad, the Mormon religion is a big supporter of war in times of war and teach they have to kill when called upon. So my friends dad asked one of them if both countries went to war with each other would you kill your friend here. He replied yes, and the look on his young friends face was of absolute shock. My friends dad simply said because you are ok with killing your neighbor is the reason why I know your a false religion. Tremendously good reasoning I must say.

Very good! However, they are a false religion (as are many others), because they preach a different gospel than the gospel the Apostle Paul taught in 1Cor 15:1-4, that we are to stand in and receive through faith in Christ blood on the cross,, by God's grace are we saved. This is a different gospel than what Mormons teach. Plus they know Joseph Smith used a Seer Stone to supposedly translate the book of Mormon yet their missionaries still teach he translated it from gold plates. God's book is not an open Canon to add to as anyone wishes. And as Paul writes in Galatians, it is not another testament but a false preaching and is to be accursed.

I was a member of this church for 25 years. I spent the last 3 years researching Joseph Smith, following my hunch there was something rotten there. What I concluded after 3 years of research on only facts, no propaganda either way, was he was a psychopath. He enjoyed power. He loved to test his followers, see how loyal to him they would be .. would they be so loyal as to donate their wives, their daughters, their lives to him. He wanted it all. Wanted full loyalty from the members .. restrict what you eat, you wear, you drink, no smoking .. consecrate everything you own including your lives if necessary. Power and loyalty to the death was what Smith sought. I saw this video .. it scratches the very surface of what went on, but the conclusion is accurate. Smith was a lying, teen molesting, adulterous, thieving psychopathic con-artist narcissist.

More like a mediocre diagnosis. His diagnosis is an embarrassment. Joseph Smith ran for president in part because they had no rights in missouri, and also he opposed slavery, an issue he was willing to die for. He also freely forgave his enemies even when they beat him to the point of unconsciousness. For instance W.W phelps bore false witness against Joseph, and Joseph Smith spent months in Jail, lost 80 pounds, etc. W.W. Phelps later came to him, and Joseph freely forgave him. That is not what a Narcissist does. He draws the conclusion based off him having leadership positions, and ignores many evidences that he was not a narcissist, such as forgiving the men who tarred and feathered him. He doesn't even get the name of the church right. I give his diagnosis an F.

So in your opinion there is only one historical narrative pathway from which to legitimize any religious framework? If a religion is post dated outside that history it can’t be real? Hence “roasting” Joseph Smith? It was quite a dance you did with well placed deriding jokes that presume zero spiritual experiences exist for anyone who has ever lived, or written. I’m surprised the commenters give you so much prescience concerning religion altogether. The great dilemma is the individual experience of anything spiritual. I no more believe you can wipe out the existence of God with “this thing isn’t like the other things” than I can smack you on the forehead and thereby you get a spiritual experience of your own. Mankind will continue to debate the God experience and the pros and cons of the surrounding behavior instructing teachings, as well as the light and dark or good and evil, and all the varied propensities of human nature for positive or negative outcomes.

Paul - it took 3 major back surgeries for me to stop long enough to finally studying Church History. I am here to tell you - there are a bunch of people like me whose activity in the LDS Church was part of the stability we craved in childhood. My parents divorced - & the Church was the one constant in my life. Being the typical type A perfectionist I was, the LDS Church was ideal for me to try to ‘earn’ my favor with Heavenly Father. Large stable families - who befriended my siblings & I & stepped in as a stable, kind example of good families we all craved. My dad was alcoholic & mother a narcissist who was bar hopping & gone most of the time - left me insecure - while a scholarship to Brigham Young University was my ticket out. I am horrified I didn’t know the real story about J. Smith until I was in my 50s. Thank goodness, my children figured it out a lot sooner. People, there are many brilliant people who are caught up in this religion & cultural ‘cult’ - family ties are deep. I relate to Leah Remini - this religion isn’t quite as loony - but has similar psychological features. Glad I am out. The lunacy is stopping with me.

I always find it strange that though it is extremely common for individuals to have multiple comorbid diagnoses (in my experience as a masters level clinical psychology trained person), these cases are always discussed in terms of one overriding diagnostic cause of behavior. For instance, isn't it possible that people like Joseph Smith and Charles Manson are both psychopathic and carry an Axis I thought or mood disorder, accounting for hallucinations/delusions? And if that's the case, wouldn't it be difficult to determine which is more causally related to antisocial behaviors?

I do not know anything about psychology. From researching cults for decades, I do know that a false prophet does not have to be much of a con man if the followers are willing to be easily duped. A good example is Jim Jones and also Heaven Gates' cults. The followers were basically begging to be manipulated. So it is with Mormons. There are no Book of Mormon ancient manuscripts, no Mormon history, no Mormon archaeology, no DNA evidence, no document trail, and none of Smith's translations are accepted as legitimate outside the LDS church. The Dead Sea Scrolls have absolutely proven Smith wrong about Old Testament corruption. Mormonism is totally based on one man's word and witnesses from two families, one family being that of Smith. Compare that with the 500+ witnesses of Christ's resurrection at Pentecost. As far as empirical evidence, the whole foundation of the religion is based on a fairy tale, the same proof as "Alice in Wonderland", but the faithful Mormon believers refuse to take off their mule blinders. The very idea that such a religion could exist, much less thrive and be wealthy, does seem to be a miracle. Believe me when I say Mormonism is the Eighth Wonder of the World.

This subject remains fascinating to me! I grew up in upstate NY, and until this day - Yep! - right up until 2022! - Joseph Smith is still spoken about as an incredible conman by many people. It is interesting to me that this criticism of Joseph Smith is not confined to those of any particular faith, or non-faith. Many of us in that part of the country trace our ancestry to the Mayflower passengers. It seems that some sort of "ancestral memory" is still ticked off at old Joseph for conning many people out of money or property while in the process of developing his religion, as well as for spiritual "sheep stealing", meaning luring people away from their former religion. Personally, I give the guy props! That whole requirement of having multiple wives thing is one heck of a draw! I imagine that many of my ancestors thought more than once about signing up!

This wasn't one of your better summaries. I left that organization many years ago, but I was in it for over 20 years. I therefore think I'm someone more familiar with the topic. Joseph Smith was obviously charismatic, because of the legacy which can be observed today. Visiting Nauvoo, Illinois gives you some historical context of who these people were in the early 19th century. There's a lot to unpack about this man and this church, if you want to get better insight from an outsiders perspective, read anything by this man, Karl C Sandberg, and you will have someone scholarly, I personally knew when he was alive. Karl Sandberg was notably an author of languages and religious texts. A great gift for story telling, he had traveled a lot, and was a constant student, even though he was a professor. When I heard your explanation of some of the things you talked about, I winced and thought, this isn't helping your credibility, if you knew the subject and the man. Smith rode to Carthage, Illinois, to stand trial, knowing that he wasn't going to be protected as the Governor of Illinois (Ford) had promised. They (Hyrum a brother, John Taylor, Willard Richards) first checked into a hotel in Carthage but were soon arrested and brought over to the jail. As jails go, it wasn't exactly a secure holding place. The window had no bars, and it wasn't a tall second story. The door wasn't locked, some reports say it wouldn't even latch. Once the local mob had gathered and essentially overran the place, Hyrum Smith and Willard Richards defense posture against the dozens of men now storming the jail, were to lean their bodies into the door. That didn't last because those that wanted in, were shooting through the door. It became chaotic all at once. People were trying to enter with muskets, while Taylor attempted to use his cane to knock down their barrels while they were shooting around the door opening. More chaos from without, as there were armed men shooting into the 2nd floor window from below. It must've been scary for those 4, but it didn't last long. Hyrum was shot at least twice, one of the shots entered his skull by his nose. Evidently a 6 shot pistol had been smuggled in and given to Joseph and after his brother was killed, he waited until a volley had been shot, then returned fire around the edge of the door. Only 3 of 6 shots were discharged. Keep in mind, all pistols and rifles of the day were crude. His 6 shot pistol would've been the only repeating type of firearm. The rifles required reloading with powder, wadding and lead ball, the flash given off by a single strike of a flint. A lot of smoke, noise and confusion. The stairwell was narrow, so the militia couldn't mount anything more than a single file attack with a small collection of men at the top of the stairs. Once there wasn't any hope of a workable defense, Joseph made a rush to the far window to draw the mob's attention toward himself. He got as far as the window ledge, then was struck at least twice, perhaps more. This pitched his body from the balance of the ledge outward, and he fell to the ground. This is the most obvious place to point out your error in reflection of events. One of the balls pierced his chest near his heart. The size of the lead balls being what they were, would've meant he would bleed out in seconds, not live for several days. Additional reports say that he either gathered himself from the fall sitting upright, with his back against the wall or was placed there by men on the ground. There were many with loaded muskets who were standing a few feet away by the fence. The account from the outside, he received several shots from these men. They wanted him dead, and they got their wish. I always liked the remarks of Mark Twain about Mormons and polygamy. He said he would take his hat off as a sign of respect for any man that could live in harmony with more than one woman at a time. Perhaps with all our serious criticism today, that might not be considered humorous. Undoubtedly, polygamy was an easy way to "apply the law", against the Mormon church. This is where you have to look past individuals and bias, and recognize the true differences. A Navuoo should begin to open your eyes to who these people were. They worked hard together. They were certainly different. They mostly voted in bloc. That's not easy for outsiders to appreciate. They had a militia of their own. Both Hyrum and Joseph were generals in that militia. In 1838 a violent attack by upwards of 240 armed militia attacked a Mormon encampment at what's named Hawns Mill. This was one of notable events, the assassination of Joseph & Hyrum Smith in 1844. The Mormons moved west after that and settled mostly in the Salt Lake basin. Trouble followed them there as well, and through the leadership of Brigham Young, they became more organized, perhaps as noted by other confrontations. The private practice of polygamy was instituted in the 1830s by Joseph Smith. In 1852, it became official and between 20 - 30% of church members participated or practiced it. The Supreme Court ruled against the practice, but it didn't go away until Utah wanted to become a state instead of a territory. Future practice was officially ended in 1890 by then President of the church, Wilford Woodruff. Neither he or any other men that had existing plural marriages, were required to cease polygamy. Some tiny splinter groups continued with it, and we've heard about them in the news. That's probably more than expected, but there's a deep history to Joseph Smith and the LDS Church. I left for my own reasons. I'm no longer a religious affiliated person.

I read your disagreement with Dr Grande, but you've spent most of it explaining in great detail the events of Smith's death, which sounded like something out of a John Wayne Western. The bottom line, and history has proven it, is that Joseph Smith was a psychopath, pathological liar and narcissist of incredible proportions. In the Bible there's not a SINGLE prophet who did anything remotely close to the barbarian behavior of Joseph Smith. The Scriptures clearly show that God was very intolerant of the slightest deviation or misbehavior by any of his prophets. The case of Moses trying to take credit for certain miracles was enough for Jah to deny his passage into the Promise Land. Jonah didn't fair very well when he disobeyed. Aside from those two, no prophets ever veered off too far from the path of righteousness. There's no way that a cretin like Joseph Smith would have God's blessing to carry out prophecies beyond the book of Apocalypse. He wasn't worthy of such an honor.

i agree this video would be better if it was more detailed but the format for these vids doesn't work well for that. you can't accurately compress that much data into fifteen minutes, you'd need a few hours at least. and you gotta bear in mind dr grande has a patreon and a day a job. these videos are the product of his labor he performs at least in part for money. it is unreasonable to expect him to perform more labor without additional compensation. as for his demeaning attitude toward the mormon faith: A devout mormon would likely feel personally attacked because mormon is an identity as well as a structure. when mormons blow up at you when you confront them with corroborated history and the whole of their belief the structure that tells them what it is to be worthy and how to be worthy, that also has provided them with its own fabricated narrative is in contradiction to what you are telling them, you are challenging really deeply held beliefs and frankly constructions of reality that they rely on for emotional security. i think dr grande exhibited a good laypersons understanding of the historical fact, which is enough i think to cause a feeling of disgust and it winds up as invective out of his mouth at mormon people (who are victims) and not at the mormon church (the perpetrator) because he has not realized that distinction. if i am right in that estimation then i think its worth acknowledging that dr grande is a human person has his own beliefs and construction of reality that appears morally opposed to mormonism. he may be letting a bit of righteous anger through with his harsher words. i would say that's certainly not ideal but it is human and we all have our moments.

@@clay2633 its a terrible analysis. Joseph Smith freely forgave those that tarr and feathered him, including forgiving W.W. Phelps who bore false testimony, and had him end up in jail for months with the coldest winter on record. Lost 80 pounds. He later freely forgave that man and welcome him as a brother. He also ran for president and was going to try to end slavery by using the sale of land proceeds. He said he was willing to die not just for his people, but over the slavery issue. Essentially he ran on an anti slavery platform while in Missouri. There is little to no evidence that Joseph Smith was a narcissist. He literally said before he died "I go as a lamb to the slaughter." Like the man doesn't even get the name of the church correct. I know most people are impressed. I am not. I give it an F, not because I am a believer but because his diagnosis is bull crap, and ignores the nuances of a man that wanted to end slavery, and reform the prison system, outside of his religious claims.

In today's age of "anything goes" as far as sexuality and relationships go I consider polygamy a rather harmless pursuit. I dare say in Russia and the Ukraine because of their deadly war the balance of females to males is so one-sided that polygamy may be the only way to repopulate these countries. Will Durant--my favorite historian and philosopher mentions in one of his books from the Story of Civilization that Germany was so destroyed of the 30 Years War that the German Diet allowed polygamy to be legal. There are times where necessity takes over from community norms. If a man can marry now, why can't a man marry two women? It's a private matter and really isn't the governments business!

I read a book about his life in high school - 50 years ago. At the time, I couldn’t understand how anyone would have ever followed him. He sounded like a shyster to me. In college, I attended a social event where I was warned ahead of time there would be Mormans, and to beware of their tactics. Sure enough, two nice looking young people managed to get me alone, and started asking questions about my beliefs. It started out friendly, but then they got pushy. Luckily, one of the adults from my group came looking for me and said it was time to go. Some of my friends were also having the same experience elsewhere in the same building. It generated good discussions afterward.

I told him I wasn’t interested. He kept asking me why I would not admit we were dating and why I was breaking up with him. Weird thing, he didn’t seem crazy. Having done extensive study in the history of the LDS Church and of Joseph Smith, Jr., I tend to agree with the last analysis, that Smith was a manipulator. Though shrewd, he wasn’t always careful enough to conceal his exploits. The Book of Mormon contains plagiarisms from works available to Smith and some of his “scribes.” Furthermore the book is highly anachronistic, being indicative of someone who is not well taught in world history. The use of the “Reformed Egyptian” as an alleged medium on the hidden record kept curious intellectuals away from Smith and his church. Egyptology was in its infancy at the time, a fact which seriously cripples Joseph Smith’s and Martin Harris’s version of the latter’s meeting with Charles Anthon. The weirdness didn’t stop with Smith’s assassination. In the time between that and Utah’s statehood, LDS leaders were frightening settlers and others with talk of beheading “gentiles” (i.e. non-Mormons). The insanity and egregiousness didn’t end with the LDS founder/prophet, and a steady stream of incredulous followers helped him pull it off.

On the second visit the pastor approached us as we were leaving and asked us if we would like to come to the Tuesday service. We asked, what is a Tuesday Service? The pastor said that he invited only the people he believed were actually saved to come for communion. He went on to try and convince us that he was responsible to God to make sure that no fakers were present. So only special people got invited. 😳 it was creepy, but immediately I felt like I was being recruited into a cult. But you can see how some people would have bought into this! I’ve read many comments from former Mormons. I think the members of each church make a huge difference on people’s experiences. My sister has been a member for almost 50 years. Her church still embraces those family members that have quit going. Her church has always been very kind, loving and accepting of family who are non members like me and our parents.

Oh sweetie lol that’s just to your face, if you only knew what they thought or said about behind closed doors if they know they can’t convert you. Mormons are really good at looking kind, loving, accepting etc. but they are far from it. I was A member for 30 years and their beliefs and teaching are full of racism, misogyny and judgment. I think it's all down to how "religiously" some Mormons follow the official teachings of their religion in relation to the shunning of those who leave the religion. You may just happen to know Mormons who do not follow the teachings of the Mormon church in relation to the shunning of apostates & admittedly, not all Mormons follow this teaching of their church - nevertheless, it is still an official teaching of the church, whether church members actually choose to follow it or not.

The LDS church is the 19th century version of and template for Scientology. Both require a level of credulity and gullibility on the part of believers that makes belief in older traditional religions appear positively reasonable. The absurdity of the ancient religions benefits from their antiquity and their connections to even more ancient beliefs and traditions, while the modern "religions" which have emerged in modern times clash more obviously with modern understanding of science, psychology, and history. The fact that the LDS Church and Scientology have managed to recruit thousands of believers in the modern age is an indictment of the deeply imbedded credulity of human beings.

I think like a lot of beliefs, religon is passed down through families. If your parents, grandparents, cousins, and neighbors all believe in it and you are born into it isn't hard to see why people would go along with it. A lot of Mormons are Mormons before they were old enough to even really think about whether it's true or not.

So far, the only 2 things I see differently, in the scriptures, from their teachings, are about when the rapture will take place, and that the Sabbath is on a Saturday. They are definitely Christian. Eh I am not impressed. Joseph Smith did not show signs of narcistic behavior. Part of the reasons he ran for President is he was opposed to slavery. He was going to use the sale of land proceeds to buy the slaves their freedom, all of them. He also wanted to reform the prison system, and he actually had a very progressive platform. He believed that slavery was evil, and was willing to die for the issue. Also he didn't even get the name of the church right. I am sorry but I give his diagnosis an F. He also ignores the abundant evidence that contradicts his diagnosis. For instance Joseph Smith freely forgave those that tarred and feathered him. Doesn't sound like a narcissist to me. The opposite in fact.

I agree with your line of reasoning as the LDS church is truly 24-7 church and not just a Sunday hour and half experience. I grew up in Utah and the church always had something you could do every day--Family Home Evening on Mondays, primary-mutual on Tuesdays, Relief Society several days of the week, etc. etc. If you are one of them, you are in an all-encompassing bubble and that isn't necessarily a bad thing. It is way of bringing meaning to your life and the church provides that succor!

he was nothing compared to Brigham Young. Smith was a cub scout when it come this Young. Smith talked a lot but Young established the cult in Utah. one thing I have to say good about these people is that they gave up their multi wives thing in order to become a state yet the muslims will not at all. Like some guy needs a lot of women when he cannot even made one wife happy with his junk. I could never understand that. Smith was probably a drug user. another thing about mormons , is that they are prepared for the end times. Smith was also a free mason , 33% and the cult is based on freemasony and not Christianity. they do not believe in the Divinity of CHRIST or that GOD was is and will always be GOD. they believe HE was a man first. which is kind of stupid.

The Gold plates supposedly were buried there after the Lamanites lost (or did they win-can't remember) and the church always used pre-Columbian developed tribes such as the Aztecs, Incas, etc as the possible lost tribe of Israel in America. How these tribes moved the Gold plates from either Peru or Mexico to the exact spot where Joseph Smith lived nearby in upstate New York has to be the coincidence of all time I dare say!
