Same here. My parents along with me, at 4 yrs old, defected from the USSR. The strength, preservence and courage that they had from the moment they made that choice to leave to this very day is something not many people possess. They continue to work towards success and happiness and quite literally live their best lives (not like an IG pic of a pretty cappuccino... I'm talking about the real thing) They are kind humble and don't take anything for granted even 32 years later. It's easy to judge others especially when they are in the spotlight, but imo when you experience a life with day to day oppression and are finally freed, there is no shame in aiming as high as you can.

You hit the nail on the head with Ivana having been an athlete and physical educator not wanting to admit physical defeat. As a soldier, your body is EVERYTHING. If it doesn't work, you're NOTHING. They say they leave no one behind. It's not True, physical maladies in another person is terrifying because you're afraid it will happen to you. And you'd rather DIE than not be 100% sound physically.

It seems the not-admitting-defeat attitude is an attribute aqcuired by trauma. My mom and aunt were twin sisters, their childhood was really harsh. Especially my aunt would shame others who needed medical attention, or help of any kind. She died because of her untreated health problems, she continuously refused help. The soldier analogy is great. She had to be like a soldier growing up in a dirt poor, overly religous family. She broke all the rules and ended up leaving the country to live life the way she wanted to. Worked for all her money and wouldn't accept defeat of any kind. But the lack of self-care in the end is what caused her multiple organ system failure at 67. That's trauma for sure.

100%. We might not agree with elderly's reasoning...but we need to be careful we do not fall into "AGEISM". Treating them as children or unable is something many elderly resent. Many become stubborn BECAUSE they feel they are less valued or a burden. Many times the last thing they have is control of their body and home. Now that I am retired as a RN...last thing I want is some whippersnapper telling me what I should do medically or safety wise even if I know it is unsafe to climb a ladder to fix a gutter. When you can't do it...then you simply can't do it. Just sayin...offer help but let them make the decisions as long as your able to. IF a family member says don't call 911 and let them die...tell them maybe they won't die and you don't want to go to jail for elder abuse. Then leave them to think about it. WORKS.

She had a old motorized wheelchair and watered her plants. We have arthritis in the family and she knew her limitations. She didn't drive anymore and I did grocery runs and we'd do meals together. I was working at night away from home 83 miles round trip. We'd chat on the phone on my way home! Fortunately Mom never had any broken bones. I used to live in Prague, the capital of Czech Republic. This country is former Czechoslovakia which used to be communist until 1990. This is relatively recent, meaning that CZ has been independant since 32 years only, as of day. Based on my personal experience as an expatriate in CZ (Czech Republic), and comparing this to other countries in Europe, Asia and North America where I lived in too (not only traveled to) - I still observed a high level of poverty outside the capital Prague, an attitude of scarcity that others might take away something from them, envy observing others having more than they do themselves, and a lack of awareness and acceptance of people of color and generally, of everyone and everything that looks different from the Czech stereotypes. I assume this is largely due to the former communist regime. All in all, people appear to be traumatized by the communist regime and as a coping mechanism, would sacrifice everything to never be poor and manipulated again and to be as wealthy as possible and to be validated by others as much as possible. This is something I observed in Ivana, in her children and in a lot of elderly people in CZ. Some are indeed not like that, and there are also a lot of Czech people who are welcoming, open-minded, curious and warm, especially the younger generations. Also, Prague as a city, has become more innovative and with an excellent infrastructure, and has been a magnet for expats like me. Nevertheless, it's important to address the elephant in the room: Yes, people still feel traumatized by their communist past and can sometimes suffer from their underlying need, to never ever be poor, looked down uppn, inferior etc. again. I feel that Ivana was striving for this until her late days, maybe also generating an NPD - but I am not here to diagnose that and also unable to do that. Just wanted to throw this cultural and historical fact in here, as for us Europeans, our culture has a big impact on our identity. Yes, Ivana has lived in the US for many years, but she did still spent her childhood and teenage years in CZ, still speaks Czech.

@@PHlophe I feel bad for her children too. It's very difficult to lose your mother and no one should have to go through the pain of losing a child at any age let alone at 96. Also, her mother's longevity shows that Ivana had many good years left had it not been for that tragic fall. I read that she was planning to go on an exotic vacation. Looks like her destination changed. (sigh) As far as blaming her kids, I get what you are saying but I don't feel that we can. I think Ivana was strong-willed and independent. I doubt anyone could have convinced her to move. One of her closest friends said she tried to persuade her to move on several occasions but to no avail. She refused to leave. Her friend said that the stairs were extra steep and scary. Part of me wondered if she could have been pushed. I doubt it but you never know. I'm not talking about family. I was thinking maybe it was a hit (no pun intended) based on an enemy of Trump.

I believe just as it is for older men to want to marry younger women, to make themselves seem as though they're still attractive, Ivana was attempting the same in her later years. By now, Trump is a "Yuge" target for criticism, jokes, as well as law suits. If he could use his ego to generate electricity, he could power most buildings in Manhattan. Interesting she was against younger wives and older men but she was 23 years older than her Italian husband. Or was that satire lol. True that, Jennifer Bray. My "war paint" has gone everywhere from Goth to just lipstick in 40+ years - each phase a reflection of how I felt about myself & the world around me. Gotta say, Goth was the best tho. 😉😅

I was on the same plane as Ivana Trump, a flight from NY to Puerto Rico in 1992, she left the plane first and when the door opened the press were already there. I was amazed at the press interest in Ivana Trump. Not that I hold it against her.
