My husband is bipolar with anger...he twists everything so that he is innocent and blames others. But yet he is the one blowing up. It’s hard to live with. I have ptsd from being abused. But his anger issues and blaming me for them is making me have more issues then from my original abuse. How do others suggest living with someone you love that has such anger and blames everyone except himself. Not to mention the physical attacks. Just the verbs for now. It’s hard having your husband call you such horrible disgusting names while he is stomping around breaking everything in the house or running to garage to drink. This is NOT who I was lead to believe that I was falling in love with and married. Only reason I stay is because I know his softer side but the dark side always out weighs the good. One minute nice next hateful never know what you getting from moment to moment. But he like to blame others he always finds an excuse for him self. Thanks for letting me get this off my mind.

My heart is broken . My daughter is so aggressive toward me . She got diagnosed almost 2 years ago at the age of 16. She gets in my face and throws things and slams doors and calls me names and most of it is when I have a difference in opinion on her cores and values. I am so lost I cannot even lay down boundaries with her. I will ask her to let me be alone for a minute and she won’t she will break into my room and demand we have a discussion which means her yelling at me violently raging face red spit flying everywhere while she screams and balls her fist up and threatens me . I’m seriously scared we may get into a physical altercation. I do everything for her she’s my only child and her dad and I have been separated since she was 2. I placed her in dance for years, put her in programs to make her feel worthy and even have overstepped my core values by allowing her boyfriend to spend the night at our home because if I can just get one night of peace before going to my highly mentally demanding job, that’s all I ask.

Please forgive those who have bipolar aggression and anger. Believe me they are hurting more than you will ever know.

My grandma has bipolar disorder, and she takes medication for it so you wouldn't think that she has it; the sweetest grandma. My dad also has it, but doesn't take anything for it, and doesn't know he has it. As someone looking in, it is explains his behavior/episodes and so forth. He has highs and lows in emotions, depressed/suicidal, or very excited/grandiose talkative and all over the place, or aggressive/rude out of nowhere.

When my sister had her episodes, she was terrifying. She would have out of control violent rages. Since shes on medication now she just gets snappy, not as scary. Our useless parents refused to deal with it. As a result bipolar people terrify me, but I learned a lot over the years. thanks!

This is so true. I was put on an antidepressant and it sent me into my first aggressive manic episode.. I told one of my nurses i would pop her eyes out like grapes and was put on close observation for 3 days until the lithium kicked in. Then I was sat next to a patient who had yet to find the right medication who was making the same threats that got me hospitalized. Sounds very accurate, my husband has bipolar 2 and can get very aggressive, but never even hints of violence. I would like to know in more detail how the aggression in bipolar 2 works. Is there anything I can do in the home environment that can reduce aggression or is it just something that needs to go away on it's own? I wish I had a true clue of what being married to this would be like , my advice especially when you see abusive and isolating behavior and destructive and if you defend yourself from the flying proverbial swords and at times things.....think LONG AND HARD if you want a life of hell. I'm battling serious sickness physically and every day is like , are the cops gonna have to get called, is he going to make me watch him kill himself, will I hide ANOTHER dislocation etc... because to protect him? YOUR life will be left in shatters in ways you can not imagine, the people calling out what this is really like should be commended and there are quite a few Bi-Polar people who are empathetic enough and smart enough to not involve another human in this hell. I wonder is there is a difference in the types and frequencies of of aggression when comparing those with Bipolar I or II disorder with a history of trauma with those who do not report such experiences. Still, lack of recollection doesn't mean it didn't happen, so it would be difficult to study. This was really informative in terms of discerning between the 2 diagnoses. Thank you!

They are definitely very aggressive. The funny fact is that they have two faces: the nice one and the aggressive one. They often have the need to receive the other's approval, that's why they pretend to be nice and friendly at the beginning. When they cannot get what they want they start to target the "enemy", which includes showing angry grimaces, shouting, etc. Other times, they give something to another, only for that person to feel indebted, and then the anger starts kicking in. The grimaces are similar to a three years old that gives tantrums. They are very emotionally draining because of their constant approval-seeking and playing various characters (the false self).

I was diagnosed with Bipolar 1 When i was 22 years old. I definitely see how i was Manic and aggressive when i was inpatient. Its taken me 6 years of intense outpatient therapy to get where i am. Ive done some not very good things like stripping my cloths off in the ED & when i was locked in a soclutuon room i got really upset and angry for not having the dr see me and in ks or where ever the hospital was there bed for restraints was there and got so upset i went to the wooden bathroom door and took all of my energy and strength to Slame it against my head. I did it 2x before the nurses Restrained me.. they checked me eyes bc they feared i had given myself a head injury. The nurse did it for every 2 hrs for over 24 hours .. I still remember doing that. I dont know why but thats been a thing that happens when i get super upset. The dr back then put me on thorazine. That stuff helped but was nazty bc of the side effects

My sibling has type 1 bipolar with psychotic features. Their episodes have been increasingly violent and they’re in psychiatric prison for assault with a weapon. My parents are in denial about their addictions so when it goes to court they always get off without court-ordered rehab. They just go to a psych prison till they’re stable. It makes me mad because they’re stable when they choose to do drugs and they know what will happen if they do so in my opinion they’re still criminally responsible.

I can’t say that I honestly agree with you on your opinions in this area. I’m not questioning the fact that of course certain individuals with bipolar disorder have a tendency toward aggression - however, in my own personal experience, bipolar disorder is far more dangerous for the individual who has it than other individuals or society.

Kraeplin described aggression in mania, so too the Greeks. Why the DSM V so awkwardly describes mania is a genuine mystery.

I am a 32 year old female and after 1 consultation they diagnosed me with bipolar 2. (Which is also very strange) I had reckless behaivior towards myself but never had agressivness towards others. Honestly i mostly suffered from others being physically or emotionally aggressive towards me. My son is 10 and i never ever showed any physical aggression towards him even when i was not treated. I believe that agression depends on the level of your own consciousness and ability to be empathetic. Even with bipolar you can have a very high level of empathy which will prevent you from doing harm to others. It feels very strange that by giving you a diagnosis they generalise you to a paticular group and behavior. Please fellow bipolars do not wear those ideas on yourself and refer each situation to your own set of values and ability to be empathetic.

I have Bipolar 1 and the isolation we are going through is really upsetting. I am also a *17 polymorph which makes me sensitive to 55 marketed medications. No one knows how to treat me and I feel really desperate. I feel my anger turning to rage only when provoked... I do not tolerate others aggression or the rage of others well at all. I am safe... but I cannot imagine this being worse than it is.

I have a close female friend who is bipolar, 1 minute she seems really nice to see me and happy that I'm around and then lately she seems like I don't even exist and that I'm virtually invisible. It got to the point where I had to walk away from the toxic situation that I keep finding myself in. I'm unbelievably heartbroken and wish things were different but at the end of the day I need to do what's best for me.

Could you do a vid on coping with unpleasant bipolar relatives? I found out through my father that my aunt has bipolar but she refuses to admit it & continues to make personal attacks on me, just because I'm there, refuses to resolve anything even though she's upset me, which is very convenient for her self-esteem. I in the meantime am feeling very upset. I have confronted her about her behaviour, her usual answer is "don't email me again" then she resumes emailing as if nothing's happened, when I am still upset about the last extreme encounter. My next confrontation will be about her bipolar, but I'm not sure I'll get anywhere.

I've read people's anecdotes about this online, but I can't seem to find any reliable research about this, nor any videos covering it. Sometimes is is so difficult to be in the person's space. One has to try very hard to look out for their own mental health. It is so exhausting and draining. My sister has this disorder and was diagnosed aged only 15 yrs old, she has just turned 70 yrs old. I do what I can.

I sincerely never wanted to get aggressive, or angry. Or severly easy to trigger. Over sensitivity, mixed with tiredness as well as stress, and 'surprises'. Left in peace I hardly got angry, nor feel any rage.

I just watched a bunch of episodes. I would love to see more about eating/sleeping disorders in major depressive disorder. I feel like as a parent, this daily habit pattern has really compounded my children's inheritance. For me, sleep and diet have been major symptoms of my MDD and subsequent Bipolar disorder dx. How do you go about addressing eating disorders that don't have anything to do with body image?

I get furious sometimes for the smallest reasons and sometimes so bad I start crying cause it's suppressed and want to "off" myself to get rid of the anger.

Agressivity may be on a mind game level, which is équivalent to torture, by slander, insidious comments, lies, and annexing other indivixuals to convince them, by inference of their victim s so called nocivity to the maniac. This delusional behaviour, directed against a person, who is just getting on with their own life and in fact barely knows the bipolar individual, has an extremely négative effect.

Gosh Dr Grande 👏💐💐 I just discovered an even higher respect of your expertise 🏆 I was diagnosed at age 50 a decade ago. I had an alcoholic Mum who attempted to abort me twice with the need for emergency C section at around wk 33wks, and I was 2and a half pounds at birth. I was raised from age 18mths til 3 by a loving aunt of mum's.then eventually immigrated to 🇭🇲 from Ireland. As only child of working parent's I was alone but content as that. Dad was an angel and mum was verbally abusive to both us. With the usual discipline of smacking me sometimes just in anger. I also was diagnosed ADHD which helped me realise I wasn't just lazy or as a couple of teachers thought, stupid! As Mum was the way she was I was sneaky naughty and ruined my own Xmas every year til I left home for marriage haha, I had always found my Xmas presents and played with all of them and re wrapped them, I was accused by Mum of being ungrateful, not particularly happy on Xmas morning 🤭 I find that hilarious now as I didn't like doing it but had never been caught and couldn't help myself? I had always had depression but I also " chose" to Live by my dad's values and even veered away from alcohol as a mental image of states my Mum would get into made me embarrassed. I was simply a scaredy cat as far as drug experimentation as mum seemed to get dependant also on prescription drugs and my brain thought if that's what overuse of medicine does, drug's would have to be worse? Kept me on straight and narrow. Eventually I crumbled more with the depression, walked into the hospital and cried! Got referred to amazing psychiatrist now retired and my current is brilliant also. The anger I also direct more inwardly at my self in criticism and frustration but I've always attended work shop's provided and did a 12 wk " balancing bipolar one 👍 that's 7 yrs ago and lost my notes. Yet this video (brilliant) reminded me of much as I've just come out of a 4day busy phase, after previous wk of depression. I'm aware now, go back to mindfulness techniques, and I will be balanced for hopefully a while 🤞 I desperately try to stay positive as I remind myself that ultimately good or had I'm responsible for how I react, feel and treat others. I have bipolar disorder, trying to learn about read everything I can to reduce the likelihood of me ending up in jail, divorced, or hospitalized. I focus on the nutrional aspects of the disorder, but fully realize it is very controversial. Non organic wheat with traces of glysophate set me off horribly, I speak only for myself.

I rapid cycle. Usually I’ll be hypomanic for one day and the next day I go to a deep depression that could last months. Sometimes I could go from depression to mania and back to depression, and one day.

So I got handfuls of meds prescribed with a five min diagnosis. No therapy. just handed loads of meds and switching them whenever I just wanted to. I live in a small town and I cant hold down a job so medicaid is all that help pays for. Than you again Dr. Grande for helping me to understand people seeking help from a health team anywhere who have Bipolar Disorder in more than one possible setting.I agree that Bipolar Disorder hsould not arbitrarily associated with a risk of aggression. Is there any research being done to determine if genetic factors are involved more often in Bipolar I than in Bipolar II which could have more environmental factors involved with that disease occuring in a person like substance misuse or substances that were prescribed like Amphetamines for ADHD or occupational hazard toxicicty like high levels of mercury ending up in the most available there food soures or whatever? Is there any research being done concerning a higher rate of Bipolar Disorder being diagnosed more often in some occupations over others or in some geographical areas first and then looking at research in trying to find patterns of inheritance for that disorder? I would think it would be more important to look at all of the possible environmental causes for Bipolar II first if that is why the 2 categories were made.

Aggression doesn't necessarily mean action. Just because someone feels like tearing your appendages off doesn't mean they will try to do so. Many of us with bipolar are very peaceful people by nature, we have an affliction that makes our mind behave erratically. I struggle, I'm not trying to give you a hard time, I'm having a hard time

Hello Dr Grande. I was wondering if were planing too do a video where you discuss how the five factor model compares to Myers Briggs and other personality models? When I took the myers Briggs years ago I came out as an E(high)N(very high)T(negligible)P(moderate). And after watching your videos I'd very roughly rate myself as moderately open, moderately conscientious, high extraversion, high agreeableness, quite high neuroticism. But since learning about Myers Briggs its made sense to me too think of people as more and less intuitive, more and less thinkers and feelers. And i see traits like intuition a lot in everyday life with people I relate too. But I don't find that those traits correspond at all to openness and agreeableness on the big 5. Does the big 5 model look at things like intuition?

There seems to be a lot of people venting about their aggressive family members in the comment section, and people that just want validation. You don’t know what it’s like to be them. Also, not all bipolar patients are violent towards others - some are aggressive and violent towards themselves. Bipolar does not equal abuse. If you are in a relationship with someone that’s physically and verbally abusive, that is not just because they’re “bipolar”. They are abusive. They could possibly benefit from behavioral therapy. People with autism are aggressive as well, and they receive behavioral therapy to reduce their aggression. This is stigmatizing mental illness.
