When you look at someone you do NOT see what is happening in their lives. People could have a lot going on that you don't know about and that not every disability is visible. Please be nice when you are talking or commenting about someone else, use nice, supportive, encouraging words. You never know, you might be the only reason they can smile or continue on with their day. I love my dog and I do everything I can to keep her safe and protected including using a harness and leash. I absolutely adore my 2 children, and love them more than everyone and everything else. Why wouldn’t I protect my children in every way I possibly could? Why would I protect them less than I do my dog? I used restraints with both my children. The type depended on how old my children were and if had 1 or 2 children. While they were wearing the harness would giggle and play games.

@@7Aheadfamily no, thank you for trying to educate people about life with autistic children, making yourself vulnerable in the process. I had a friend with 2 autistic children and I know how some people spoke to her. She ended up printing business cards explaining autism. No one has the right to criticise what you do to protect your children.

A friend had the perfect response when someone accused her of treating her child like a dog because she was using a toddler leash. "Yes I am. I love my dogs and do whatever is necessary to keep them from running into danger. Why would I do less for my child?"

My son with autism is now 10. We learned the hard way that a leash was a necessity. My so. Was non verbal and lost in a Kohls store. After that we never went without one. I used to get looks and rude comments but at least he was safe. FYI I love watching your family. Thank you for sharing.

I used s leash Just once. The emlloyees @ our local Store we're very Happy about IT but cistomers went nuts. One men even followrd us Home. Argued and attacked me on the Sidewalk. Soon after I Received a Letter From German child protection service & I had to explain myself.

we as parents know our kids and know them well. we know what is needed to help them so don't let it bother you what others say they are not the ones who have to live with the consequences of what might happen if we let our guards down. I think you guys are GREAT parents and doing a great job raising your kids. by the way also sharing your experiences with others and helping young parents with questions and don't have anyone close to ask. so, thanks again.

I went through a time where my son would do that too, from 3 to 7. He is turning 9 this week and thankfully now he is doing a lot better and understands to not run away from mommy. Praying Ezra will also surpass that phase, blessings 💙

I work in NYC and people need to do whatever is needed to keep kids out of traffic so I never judge parents for using leashes here. However, you have opened my eyes that some kids may also have leashes if they have special needs. Your parenting skills are amazing!

There is a lot of ignorance around using a safety harness leash on kids. I have an Autistic child too but actually used one on one of my kids who didn't have Austism, but was prone to distraction and getting lost when he was young. When we traveled to non english speaking countries he wanted it because he felt safe having that link to us in crowds if he let go of our hand. It's for safety and there are all kinds of reasons you may need one, I find the people who always want to comment are usually childless people who haven't been there and would be the first to judge if you had an accident without the strap too.

Though not involving kids with special needs, our family used harnesses with toddlers through 4 generations. mainly while travelling through railroad terminals, airports & other crowded areas.

Don't listen to strangers who do not know your family. A leash is a great idea for runners whether they are autistic or not. Their safety is paramount.

In the 60's, my mother used a toddler leash on me. It kept me safe! My autistic grandson is now tethered! Otherwise, as you pointed out, he'd be in the street in the blink of an eye. He KNOWS when I shout "STOP" to freeze, but God-forbid that ONE TIME he doesn't! :-(

Ezra is as precious and deserving of experiencing life as any other child. He is wonderfully and fearfully made in God’s image as are the rest of your children as well as mine. I myself am learning more about autism and may decide to get myself and daughter for an assessment for autism. I appreciate your channel. Btw I used leashes with some of my children at times on outings to keep them safe and it wasn’t because of autism.

We have a runner too, now she is 6 years old it is only when she have a AuDHD RSD episode in school, where she have no safe space to heal her brain. She still sit in the grocery cart when we go grocery shopping, if she isn't she will run around being very overstimulated by all the wrapping, the people and the food and things. She will also start a conversation up with everyone. As a family where we all are neurodivergente in many ways and combinations it is very stressful to do grocery shopping, and I prefer to do it myself in the morning when the grocery stores open, to limit the people who are in the store so I can get quickly in and out and get it all.

I think a leash for an Autistic child unable to listen a follow directions makes perfect sense. Especially in a crowded place where he could get lost or the chance of falling off a dangerous cliff. You are brave. We drove through the park with my 4 year old Austin son with ADHD. I wouldn't let him out of the car because he had mild autism but was more worried about the ADHD. Some people are not aware of the danger. Even a neurotypical child or adult could fall too.. I think it would be safe to have a leash on all neurotypical toddlers and preschoolers too,

I’m 100% for toddler leashes. I used one on my son because he was a runner. Later in childhood he was in fact diagnosed with autism. Even if he wasn’t, I still don’t regret the leash.

67 years ago my mother used a leash on my brother, he was not autistic he was just a robust little boy who would never have gotten to adulthood if she hadn’t of used it! Keep your boy safe, heck with others thoughts!

I think a toddler leash for a typically developing kid his age would generally be a bad idea, but Ezra needs to be safe and the alternative would be to deny him many experiences.

On lookers as I call them don't know anything just judgemental humans .I don't even play no mind to on lookers when my littles has a meltdown in public. I give side eye and they get hint pretty quickly don't mess with mama bear☺ Love your videos 💙

Old Sturbridge village in Sturbridge, Massachusetts is also a good place to see how people lived around that time if someone happens to be in the area. The water wheel that I saw in this video reminded me a little of the water wheel there. I think the Old Sturbridge Village water wheel was bigger. This reminds me that the first compound word that I learned (during the school field trip to Old Sturbridge Village at age seven) was “Water Wheel”. Not long after I learned other compound words including “hot dog”. Being on the spectrum (level two when I was growing up) it took me much longer than normal to learn compound words. Sturbridge is not a national park but it’s one of several places in Massachusetts that is worth visiting (along with Boston, Lexington, and Concord). Incidentally even though Simon is not much of a runner you would still want to have both Ezra and Simon on toddler leashes if you go there. On one trip to Boston when I was older than Ezra I threw the box of tea in the harbor and almost went overboard. Luckily my parents grabbed me just in time to prevent this. In addition Boston has many distractions and a lot of traffic. Like New York City I would say that most kids around Simon’s current age or younger (whether autistic or neurotypical) should probably be on toddler leashes for their own safety. If nothing else in either city it would be easy for a kid to take a wrong turn, get lost, and begin panicking. And panic can cause mistakes (even for adults).

I think they're entirely appropriately when used correctly. The black harness looks much stronger and safer than the gray/blue one, espeically the way the chest clip was up at his neck. You do what needs to be done to keep your kids safe.

Don't listen to those bad comments. The Fact that Ezra is using a Toddler leash is YOUR choice, not theirs. The people who gave you bad comments are just rude and salty. People need to mind their own business, Do you think that?

My first is 15 months old and just had my first 'don't put that child on a leash.' He was walking by a road. I don't trust my wobbly car obsessed 15 month old's short attention span and toddler level self control. He's also so short I can't walk along holding his hand without great discomfort to me and him. I didn't know there was so much controversy about it.

Toddler Leashes: ✅ Yes I approve!!! Its for Ezra’s own safety and wellbeing. Without the toddler leash, things could of ended differently. Luckily they didn’t. **Parents get the final say in their children’s safety.**

We are going there next month but next week I am taking my ADHD son, my ASD son and a toddler on a week long trip, by myself. You already know, my ASD son will be attached to me wrist to wrist and I don't care what people say. So tired of stares and judging, either because I do "nothing" when he freaks out or because he is" leashed". Cause people don't ask why, they just judge. It will be fun!

I’m 17 and autistic and I could use one for my mum or dad or sister to hold when I’m having trouble with like crowds or stimulation so that a balloon popping doesn’t make me run into the road I wish it was more socially acceptable because there’s been a lot of close calls especially when I was younger

Well in this case it is to insure Ezra's safety. I fully approve. Now if it was used for cruel and unusual punishment then I would be like no a ah no way! But y'all are not even near like that and you don't use cruel and unusual punishment or use it to torture him or for fun or anything. Y'all are using it to protect him. So that is fully understandable. Seeings as you guys fully well don't use cruel and unusual punishment. Plus he is Happy and comfortable. So that's all that's matters. So I agree with the person who commented that

That harness is totally reasonable. I'd just like to call it a harness than a leash. You might also want to try those designs that has a tiny backpack so it's more stylish or kiddie. Sometimes even relatives might disapprove of this. It's not being lazy as a caretaker, it's just an extra protection for the kid. And if anything unexpected happens, at least you or strangers around could easily rescue him. I'm have autism too and I feel more secured if I always stay close to people I know while walking but many things still distracts me. I really don't like getting lost because crowds are really overwhelming especially for a kid with autism.

I would just like to add that I work in a special needs classroom and we often use harnesses provided by the physical therapist for students that can walk but still need some assistance walking, for balance issues, seizure risk, fall risk, etc. It has a strap in the back to hold onto that has a loop to put our hand in before holding the strap so it can't slip out of our hand. Some kids can jerk away from just a hand grip. This should say something about the fact that simply holding a kids hand may not be enough, for whatever reason. It is a tool/ medical device, much like a wheelchair is a tool/ medical device for people who can't walk. We also have padded helmets for children who have seizure risk, hit themselves, or bang their heads on the floor, tables, etc. They are tools for safety or to help someone be as independent as possible. This also applies to small children who may need that extra safety tool. I hope this helps in making people more aware and accepting.

It's very good for them autistic chidren to have a siblings because they can learn from them also😊 me also i have a 6 yr old son with mild autism and he has a little sister and a big brother and aside from us parents they can also relay to their siblings to learn to communicate and a playmate...

Aspie here, I did research many years ago for a friends son with autism who is a wanderer/ runner, I found a company online run by a lady in Canada called Elaine, who makes custom harnesses for people with autism and other conditions, I recall Autism Family using one for their son Ian with a video or 2 showcasing the harness. from what I researched they are much stronger and longer lasting than the generic brands. Lastly your family is lovely and you are great parents.

I had the worst looks of judgement from people in my neighbourhood and patrons of a resto tables of people sat staring. I was alone with my asd 3 yr old. He was trying to bolt towards the lake which was across the street whilst there were trucks literally speeding by. He is too focused on gettong to the water but, not the cars. He knew we were in public and started screaming pulling trying to slam and run his face along the pave ment. In this case, i wish i had a harness type attachment so, i could defuse the trantrum, prevent getting hurt. And present to the ppl staring how positive parenting can be a challenge. But, is this the lazy way to deal with this issue? Specifically in high traffic urban public areas?

That’s a great question. Simon can unbuckle himself but he doesn’t do it. And Ezra we use a car seat that is a bigger booster seat and we use a lap and shoulder strap on top of that and since it’s buckled on the side, he can’t reach it. But if he were to just sit without a booster seat, he would escape.

A toddler leash is good for toddlers or kids with autism, because toddlers are crazy and want to go everywhere. With kids with autism that doesn’t notice the danger in so settings especially when you’re traveling around the U.S.

totally believe in toddler leashes. it keeps your toddler safe, especially from their impulsive, dangerous decisions. rational thinking is not developed yet in toddlers so instead of forever correcting and making a stressful situation, you give the toddler space to be without the infinite corrections and accidents.

My son is 4 that’s also autistic and he’s unaware of danger…. He loves being outdoors but I’m afraid of him getting hurt, I thought getting him a safety leash as well so we can both enjoy the outdoors safely and without me worrying about him getting hurt. Or worrying that he will run into the road.. I think a safety leash is a good idea for kids that are unaware of danger.

Yes, I personally believe national and state parks should require harnesses on kids on certain trails that might have elevated risks. I have used harnesses with kids ranging from 3 years old up to 10 years old I see no problem with it. A 9 year old was killed after falling 100 feet off an edge in the Shawnee so yes, nothing but positive towards harnesses on kids
