In Part 3 I take a closer look at the activation of the lower abdominal muscles that create the tucking action that brings the forefoot down to the ground following the placement of the heel. Visit my website: www.movementsp...
This action is coordinated with the rotation of the upper abdominal muscles on the same side of the body that helps to shift the body forward. The proper coordination of upper and lower abdominal muscles controls the initial contact and change of weight. When done properly, this cushions the change of weight, keeps the spine aligned, and keeps the knees aligned properly over the ankles.

This Flow Motion series has been enlightening - I think I've been making the mistake of alternately placing the arms forward, but not really rotating from the rib cage as well. I'll be out walking tomorrow to try it!

perfect. The arms should be completely relaxed. All of the arm motion should be coming from the rotation of the torso. You should not have to make them swing.

Dr , so ever when we walking must stay in flexion the back leg and then in normal position?. Maybe my error is i walking with my back leg extended and then to try extended more I end up walking as tiptoes

Make sure to watch my hip function videos. I think it is clearer than me writing it out. Simply put, to release your swing leg from the ground you should use an intention of lifting up and forward from the standing hip, not pushing backward.

Could share your opinion on Racewalking technique? I just want to find a way to walk as efficiently as possible. Love your videos...Thank you!

Hi Peter. I am glad you are enjoying the videos. I have thought about doing a race walking technique video, but unsure how many would be really interested. It is a very fast way to walk and very good cardiovascular exercise. It is different than what you would call power walking. Race walking has very specific rules and technique that require having a fully extended knee at the mid stance position. Outside of the sport, probably most people would not be interested in it because of the dramatic hip swivel that results from the technique, but it is very effective.

@@ToddMartinMD Thank you so much for your response Dr. Todd. Any down side of the dramatic hip swivel and the fully extended knee? I wonder if you could produce a video comparing Race and Power Walking? That would be great!

If your goal is an extreme cardio workout then racewalking is good. If you are just trying to walk efficiently, there is no need for it. It is a sport. Regular power walking as I demonstrate in my power walking videos is more logical. You can also just walk with the normal technique I describe, it do it quickly, like I discuss in How to Change Speed when Walking. You can get good exercise with all 3. You can only compete in the olympics with Racewalking

Is tuking the pelvis shold be happned in the bouth side or just in the stand leg
@ToddMartinMD
@ToddMartinMD 3 жыл бұрын
Just on one side at a time. The ticking action is what roots the leg while the other leg is unrooted as the tick is released in the other side. Tucking both sides leads to a posterior pelvic tilt and remaining split weight.

Its the same action, tucking and rotating. That is the function of the lower abdominal muscles.

It was hard to find a good video with his foot placement. But he has a very clear, slow change of weight which gives it a very controlled look. He does roll his shoulders a little forward which is not necessarily a good thing because it is bad for the rotator cuff. But it does give a relaxed swagger to the walk. Denzel Washington does that also. The forward shoulder position can be seen by looking at his palms, which are relatively forward over the front of his thighs instead of pointing to the side of the thighs. The forward roll of the shoulder allows him to counter with a little backward rotation from the shoulder blade that gives the pronounced swagger. He is trading a little bit of good posture for the sake of a cooler vibe.
