An explanation of what "Toe" is on a car, why we need to adjust in or out and how it affects the vehicles handling and tyre wear.
Including explanations on toe in and toe out.
The steering geometry set-up is usually set by the manufacturer, and to maintain optimum performance and tyre life, we need to make sure that the toe setting is correct.

finally I found a video that confirmed my problem without spending any money! my car has inner tire wear in the front and feels wobbley on the highway. I will do a small toe-in adjustment today 😬

okey i tightned my front end, holyshit the car drives smoothly now! it used to feel like I was allways driving on a very fine gravel road, not I can barely feel the road under me through the steering wheel. it does sharp corners much easier now too

THIS! I've been wondering why my car drives so horrible ever since I put lowering kit on it. The gravel road comparison also hits home, feels like the car is floating and has no grip. Will have to try and adjust the toe-in accordingly.

@@NoName-oj5km I fine adjusted mine 2-3 times, it has more angle than what is stock on it. But the car feels more steady on the highway. One negative part about having abit too aggressive toe-in is the car is very sensitive to really small adjustments done one the steering wheel when driving. But the car doesnt float like a boat anymore at least

Just got my truck alignment done today. It had a total of -2.33 of total tow out. Front tires where wearing fast and hitting bumps etc made for weird handling characteristics. Is -2.33 alot?

This might be late but yes, -2.33 is a lot.

What are the effects on the rear wheels for fwd and rwd?
@EducationalMechanics
@EducationalMechanics 7 жыл бұрын
There would be very minimal effects on the toe setting for the rear wheels. The toe setting can be adjusted for specific situations, like autocross and FWD rally cars, giving them a tighter turn. Other than that, on a normal car, because the rear axle isn't steered, adjusting the toe of the rear wheels has a limited use. see this article for a bit more info: www.motoiq.com/MagazineArticles/ID/1936/PageID/3049/The-Ultimate-Guide-to-Suspension-and-Handling-Part-Seven--Tuning-your-Toe.aspx However, for cars that have a rear steered axle (Nissan Skyline, Honda Prelude) then the setting would be important to get the car to handle correctly.

I need to find Rear Toe Tool for 2001 Saturn SL2. Do you happen know where I can purchase that tool? Bcs of the age of the car the local dealers don't have that tool anymore in their inventory. When attempted to do alignment on the rear of my car the screen shows: a tool which looks like L-shaped wrench and it reads on the screen "Rear Toe Tool". Thank you for the film.

I've never heard of that tool. When I did the rear toe on my 96 SL2 I just loosened the bolts on the arms (17mm I think) and used a pry-bar to twist the wheel assembly in or out. Then tightened up the bolts and remeasured it to make sure. You might want to go on a site called "Saturnalia" and see if anyone has info on where to get that tool. If you're buying it from GM, you can bet it's gonna be expensive.

@@Cokie907 Thank you for the concern. I found the tools, they are: 1. "Specialty Products Company 78090 Rear Toe Tool for Saturn" and 2. "Saturn and GM Rear Camber / Toe Adjustment Wrench Tools Equipment Hand Tools". They are both on Amazon, but I bought them cheaper through one company online. I took them to the dealership and asked if I can watch how the alignment is done (never saw that procedure). They kindly agreed. I saw: they loosened the rear inboard lateral-link-to-crossmember fastener and started to adjust the rear wheel, moving the lateral link (can't tell in or out), using the first tool. Don't know if they used the second tool (I was watching on the distance).
