TOEFL Reading - Don’t Do This!
In TOEFL Reading you can easily make mistakes that cost you a lot of points. I scored 29 in TOEFL Reading and I talk about 5 things that you should not do in this part of the TOEFL test. Some of the mistakes I talk about will slow you down making it impossible for you to finish the TOEFL Reading section on time and answering all the questions. Others will simply make you lose points. You can easily avoid all of these mistakes if you know about them. When doing the TOEFL Reading task always remember them because you must absolutely avoid them if you want to get a high TOEFL Reading score. Don’t let these mistakes get in your way!

HOW TO WORK WITH THIS VIDEO
1. Watch the video and make sure you understand everything.
2. Download the illustration.
3. Use the illustration for your TOEFL preparation.
FYI
The examples I use in the video and in the illustration are made up by me.
1) DON’T READ THE WHOLE PASSAGE IN DETAIL
When you start the TOEFL Reading task do not read the whole passage in detail. At that point you do not know yet what the questions are about. Therefore, it does not make any sense to read the text in detail because you do not know what you need to focus on. First, skim the passage. You only need to know where the information is roughly located in the text. Second, read the question. Third, go back to that particular passage in the text and read it again, and this time you read it in detail so that you can extract the necessary information to answer the question.
2) DON’T TAKE NOTES
In TOEFL Reading it is not necessary to take notes. It can even hurt your score! In TOEFL Reading everything is given in the passage, you just need to figure out the correct answer. TOEFL Reading differs from TOEFL Listening, Speaking and Writing in this point. In these TOEFL tasks it is important to take notes because you must prepare your answers. However, in TOEFL Reading taking notes does not provide any value to you. You only need to know where you can find the information you need and then you must figure out the correct answer. Don’t slow yourself down by taking notes in TOEFL Reading!
3) DON’T SKIP A QUESTION
In TOEFL Reading it is really tempting to skip a question if you do not know the answer. Do not do that! If you do not choose an answer, this can go terribly wrong. For example, you may run out of time or you may forget to go back; TOEFL Reading is a stressful situation so this can easily happen. In TOEFL Reading you do not get penalty points for wrong answers, therefore you should always answer a question even if you are unsure about it. If you do not answer the question you will risk losing a point. Also, you can always go back and change that answer if you have the time.
4) DON’T CHANGE AN ANSWER OUT OF A WHIM
Guys, honestly do not do that! I did this several times in my TOEFL preparation and most of the times it turned out that this was a bad idea. What I did was I answered the questions, went on answering the other questions and then decided to go back and have a look at questions I had been unsure about again. Then I changed some answers without reading the passage again. It turned out that most of the times I had converted a correct answer into a wrong answer. Therefore, if you want to change an answer, always read the passage again. If you do not have the time to do that do not change the answer.
5) DON’T SPEND TOO MUCH TIME ON A QUESTION
If you do not know the answer to a question in TOEFL Reading do not spend too much time on this question. Of course, you should always take some time to figure out the answer to a question, but not too much! The TOEFL Reading task is a race, you need this time for answering the other questions. Therefore, if you are unsure, choose an answer that you think is plausible and go on.

Hi Juva, how much time do we spend on a quick glance. During my practice, i hurt my score coz i missed some important details mostly because I was running against time. Also i do mess up the last 2 mark question as i haven't read the complete passage. Finding them in the last few minutes puts me to panic.

@@mohitindumukhi7319 Hi Mohit, I'd recommend spending about 1-2 minutes on skimming the passage. Then have a look at the questions. When answering them, make sure that you read the relevant part of the passage in detail. This should help you to find all the information you need to answer the question correctly. The Offical Toefl guide practise tests, there are 4 reading practise tests, did you use several toefl offical guides? Also - do you remember how similar the offical TOEF reading test was compared to the ones in the offical toefl guide reading part? Is it also 3 reading passages, same amount of questions and same time frame? Kind regards from Denmark!

Hi Dennis, you're so welcome! I'm so glad the video is helpful to you. I used the practise tests. Honestly, I was shocked when I did the reading section in the TOEFL. The texts were much longer and more complex. But don't worry! If you do well in the practise tests, you will also be able to manage TOEFL Reading. Apart from that the real test is totally similar. However, you may get a fourth so-called 'experimental' passage in the real test. They sometimes do that to test new things for future tests. Hope this helps :) Lots of greetings to you!

Thanks Juva for the great videos you share with future test takers. Anyway, I have 3 questions irrelevant to the video topic; 1- If my exam starts at 10:00 A.m. and I understand that I need to be there 30 minutes before that time., but the question is, if I arrived early and finished the regular security check and these stuff early, will I start the exam immediately and get distracted by every student entering the test room? or all students enter at once? 2- Is it better to reach the the speaking section before other students in order to focus more on the tasks? (for example by skipping listening for the directions, do you recommend such a thing), or it's better to slow down and start a little bit further than others in order to hear them answering speaking questions and get an idea about the tasks? 3- Perhaps this one sounds silly but it's really got me thinking about it lately, What is the best location in the room to take the test? I mean near the entrance door, or in the middle, or may be as far as possible from the door? and do we have the choice where to sit in the room? or it's just their decision and we can't discuss this matter? I know that was too much to be asked, and I apologize for that. Thanks a lot Juva, really appreciate it 💖

Hey Nisa, both aspects will play a role in TOEFL Reading. First, if you have a broad range of vocabulary and are used to reading English texts the reading section will be easier for you. Second, knowing the question types is very important because this will save you a lot of time and you will know what you are looking for. I'd recommend practicing with the free ETS practice tests, especially in order to get to know the question types. Hope this helps :).

Hi Nuseyba! Don't be too hard on yourself, the reading section is really difficult. However, you can quickly improve your reading score if you have the right strategy. The first thing you need to do is reading it in the right order. As I say in the video: 1. Skim the passage 2. Read the question 3. Go back to the relevant part of the passage and read it in detail Further, it is important that you know the question types. If you like, have a look at this video where I give tips how to boost your reading score: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qtx9eaZq1amlg2w.html Hope this helps :)

Its maybe a strange question but do we have to save our answers at the end of each part before that the time is over or it saves automatically ?

I know you are concerned about the listeners around the world, cuz they watch your video. I would like to suggest you to speak a lil bit faster. It feels like you talk slow. I might be wrong but just saying. Once consider this feedback. I have watched this video in 1.25x and 1.5x speeds.

Hey juva how much practice do we need for toefl? I mean 6 hours a day is enough or how much you put your time on teofl.
@juva
@juva 2 жыл бұрын
@@asy858 Hey :) This depends on your current level of English, the amount of time you have, and the score you need. However, 6 hours a day is already a lot. It may be hard to concentrate if you study more.
