Hi Josh, I just want to say that your videos are really helpful. I got 100 in my TOEFL ibt Home Edition. I only had 10 days to prepare and you have no idea how much I am grateful that your videos exist. These practice tests help me to achieve 100/120. I had no other resources for the test and it was my first time trying. I literally had no experience and knowledge about TOEFL. I found your videos. I practiced these 2-hour tests. And I reviewed my wrong answers like you told in other videos. I read the explanations. And I tried my wrong questions again. Also, it is your another tip (you suggested that we should practice with the same test.) I didn't believe it at first but it WORKED. I strongly recommend to anyone who is reading this to do the same test at least twice.

Thank you for the video. At question 83, i understand the reason why B is correct, but i think A might be right as well. It says: "The term "cancer" usually describes diseases that cause irregular cells to multiply uncontrollably" and the text mentions: "Cancer is a broad term that describes diseases caused by abnormal cells in the body dividing uncontrollably." I think divide and multiply have the opposite meaning, so I thought it was the correct answer ..
@TSTPrep
@TSTPrep 2 жыл бұрын
Ah, I see your point Amy and that is an interesting perspective. In this case, "divide" doesn't mean the same as in math (i.e 8/2=4) but instead "divide" is more like "split", so if it splits, then it is synonymous with "multiply". I hope that clarifies!

Hope you don't mind to reply your comment..... Can i ask u a question? You got 30 in reading which is marvellous. How difficult the reading section was? Is it as difficult as the official toefl IBT book volume 1 and 2? Anyway, thank u!
@thisisakr
@thisisakr 2 жыл бұрын
@@hannahsanchez138 It not too difficult. One thing that helped me was instead of reading the entire thing and then attempting the questions, I directly went to the first question and solved it. So I read paragraphs which were required for the questions I was on and since the questions generally go in order by the time I reached the last question I had read all the entire passage. This helped me in two ways 1. Saved time as I didn't had to re read if I forgot something. 2. Not too much pressure on memory to remember the entire passage. The difficulty level is similar to iBT book I would say; NOTE: I prepared in just 1 week so I haven't gone through the books extensively. However, the practice tests were almost of similar level. I was scoring 28- 29 in free practice test they provide along with the book.

@@thisisakr Thank you! Also, you must've had an excellent English skill to score 30. Can i ask you one more question? i promise this is the last one. But, if you think the question I asked you might upset or offend you, it's absolutely okay not to answer my question. "Which kind of speaking mistakes you think you've made?" like topic development or not enough information of the lecture... I'd be greatly appreciated if you can tell me ur speaking tips, too😁 cuz one of my friends don't know where to pause when he speaks in English. Thank you and really sorry for bothering u alot.

@thisisakr 2 жыл бұрын
@@hannahsanchez138 Nah it's not offensive at all 😂. I am not a native speaker so what's the shame in getting less score plus 110 isn't that bad either 😂 So, What happened was the prompt was a negation type. Like Do you agree/ disagree this should NOT be ... Something like this and while preparing my thoughts for speaking I forgot about the not and while speaking it came to my mind that oh shit I forgot there was a Not .. So you see If I prepared the material for I disagree with ... It sounded more like I agree with it bcz the question had a not in it. This is very confusing isn't it? I think @Tstprep Josh might be able to explain it better or maybe do a video about it. To sum it up due to this my mind went totally blank for few seconds and then I had to hurry up and finish things. So definitely the way too long pause and unable to complete cost me. I should say I was unable to complete the speaking in a min in 2 questions. And tip for your friend about when to take a pause, well think of it in this way, you take a pause everytime you reach a full stop or a comma. So if you feel what you are saying if written down would need a pause or full stop you pause. Again I am not an expert

It's definitely important for you to read more than just TOEFL materials if you are looking to build vocabulary and improve your reading skills. The first site we would recommend is LingQ. It is a program designed to give you a ton of reading content, from news articles to short stories at all levels of proficiency. It also has flashcards and other tools to help you remember vocabulary. The second site we would recommend for more "TOEFL-like" materials is Scientific American, which is an academic journal with similar types of passages from the test. If you need to talk to a teacher, you could also try a trial lesson at this link and they can give you some pointers - tstprep.com/store/toefl-trial-lesson/

Recently there has been a debate, more specifically, in regard to the passage, the writer puts forth the idea that the frog population is decreasing in the last few years, and suggests three solutions to this problem. In the listening, the lecturer is quick to point out that there are some serious flaws in the writer’s claims. In fact, the professor believes that these are not logical and practical solutions to this problem, and addresses in detail the trouble with each point made in the reading. First and foremost, the author of the reading states that pesticides used by farmers are harming the frogs, and that is because these pesticides spread from farms to the habitat of the animals and kill them. He goes on to say that these people should stop the usage of such chemicals. However, some professionals stand in firm opposition to this claim. In the listening, for instance, the professor states that, if farmers would stop using pesticides, they would in a disadvantage, and end up losing a lot of money because the crops will die, so they will be less competitive on the market. Second of all, according to the text, a fungus has spread in the world and has caused the decline of the number of frogs. In addition, the author mentions that scientists have created an antifungal medication, if this medication is put to use on a large scale, it will heal them and seize the spread. On the other hand, the lecturer addresses this point when he states that, the use of this treatment should be on every frog in the population, on its own. If scientists wanted to apply it on a large scale, they should have spent a lot of money and effort, so this idea is not practical. Finally, the author brings his argument to a close by suggesting that the decline is caused and threatened by human activities, for example, water draining. If the use of water is reduced, many frog species would recover. Nevertheless, the speaker thinks, that the real reason for the decline is: global warming. Moreover, he said that not only frogs are getting extinct, but lots of marine species are being wiped. To sum up, both the writer and the professor hold conflicting views about the solutions to the decline in the number of frogs. It is clear that they will have trouble finding common ground on this issue.

Hi Josh! Thank you for such comprehensive video covering all the question types for practice. I need your help with Q57. Why option C is incorrect? I choose C because next sentence is starting from the word "Yet" which then mentions a contrasting idea. I do not understand why concluding sentence would be after a sentence which provide a different idea. Can you please explain?
@TSTPrep
@TSTPrep 10 ай бұрын
C cannot be answered because the sentence we are trying to insert says "these explanations." If we put the sentence in C, then there is another explanation directly after it. Therefore it needs to go in D and serve as a summary.

Hi there Adrian and thank you for pointing that out, but in this situation, we do not need a subject (it) since it is only a vocabulary question and "made up of" is a phrasal verb that could be a synonym for the word in the prompt. I've just got back from a summer camp in the us, I've talked in English for three months straight fluency, and now I still can't correct those types of question. You would have to work with a teacher to get a more specific answer, but everyone has strengths and weaknesses. Listening tends to measure your ability to understand the gist of what is being said, while the reading focuses more on details. So, your comprehension might be fairly high, but when it comes to looking at details and figuring out the difference between statements it is more of a challenge. This is just a guess though. You can always meet with a teacher for a trial lesson if you want more specific answers for yourself at this link - tstprep.com/toefl-store/toefl-trial-lesson/

Hi there and good question, I just looked at the question to doublecheck and "departures" is the best answer since in this case "deviation" is supposed to imply "leading away from" "astray", and "departures" is the best answer here when compared to the other three, "inclination" means more like a "preference for", which doesn't fit the meaning of "departures" here, I hope that answers your question.

@TSTPrep
@TSTPrep Жыл бұрын
Hi there Gleb and thank you for bringing this up. I think I understand your point, but yes, interpreting it as "the first chemists who ever lived" could be confusing. The passage begins with the phrase "as early chemists worked.." and the phrase "first chemists" is meant to be synonymous with "early chemists" and is a good summary option for the first paragraph. "Mendeleev and Meyer" is a separate subject handled in other parts of the passage.

In question 82, why cant the answer be "B"? The paragraph says the surface is covered with ice; not water. I understand why the answer can be "C" also because it says in the answer option that it was renewed "once" (which is not written anywhere in the text). But why not "B"?
@TSTPrep
@TSTPrep Жыл бұрын
Good question. In the paragraph about Europa, it states, "In this, it resembles Earth, which has a layer of water in its surface, but in Europa's case, the water is capped by a thick crust of ice." In your opinion, water and ice are two separate materials, whereas others might argue that water and ice are the same material in different states. Further, the passage even states that Europa has water with the top layer in the form of ice, hence C is a better answer than B. It's tricky, but I hope that clarifies why C is the best answer.

@TSTPrep
@TSTPrep Жыл бұрын
Hi there and good question. One important thing to keep in mind is that this is an inference question, so the answer is not always directly stated. As the answer key states, "C is correct because paragraph 1 begins with “one technique we can use to measure the amount of heat”, and also says, “using this approach”, both of which indicate that this method of measuring is not the only one. Even though the passage states "the heat is exchanged with a calibrated object (calorimeter), D is still incorrect because this is an inference question, not a detail question." B is incorrect because it is never implied that it can "only" be used for this purpose.

Hi there and thank you for the question. This is an interesting point since in this sentence there is a referent to the previous sentence "these planets are in such a position" so you do need to look at the previous sentence to understand the context. In general, you usually only have to focus on the highlighted sentence, but you may need to look around the sentence for additional contextual information around the highlighted sentence sometimes since it is part of a longer passage. Question 42 clearly states that incorrect answers leave out essential information. Shouldn't the answer be Option C instead of Option A? Option A clearly leaves out the crucial points and takes only the outline of the information and that is how it's supposed to be but when compared to other questions of the same sub topic, Option A feels very deficit.
@TSTPrep
@TSTPrep 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there and thank you for your question. I understand your point. The reasoning for option "A" being correct in this question is that it includes the most important information from the sentence, the fact that Mount Olympus is the largest on Mars. The information about the diameter and height could be cut away and the sentence would still be complete and still contain the crucial information, the fact that it is the largest mountain on Mars, hence "a" being the correct answer. Sorry for the confusion and hope that clarifies a bit.

Great question! Actually, if you can answer these questions in less than 90 seconds that would be fine, I just gave 60 seconds here so the video moves along a bit faster, but feel free to pause at any time. If you are still having trouble, check out this video on time management, which might answer some of your questions - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a8uHZtWcm8yuYaM.html

We have mixed opinions about our tests, some people find them easier others find them more difficult than the TOEFL iBT. Here is a link to a free TOEFL practice test from ETS if you want more of an idea of how the test will look/feel - www.ets.org/toefl/testtakers/ibt/prepare/tests/

I don't understand why in question 46 the answer is A, since that information it's not mentioned in the highlighted sentence.

@@TSTPrep I have the same doubt, the explanation in the document still not clear to me. English is not my first language. I still go for A as the answer.

@@arianarivera6519 thank you for the follow up. The document states, "A is correct because it explains the main idea using synonyms. Option B is not actually stated in the sentence. Option C is not the main point, and D is more of an inference" You said "I still go for A as the answer," but A is correct, so I'm not sure what you are asking.

@@TSTPrep The explanation in the document means option D but it states that B is correct. This is confusing because both seem correct to me.

@@spree9053 Hi there and thank you for your question. I'm not sure what part of the answer key you are referring to, but B is indeed correct here. D is incorrect here because it would read "This passage suggests that meritocracy is not solely based on merit but other factors as well," however, the very definition of meritocracy is based on merit. The passage states that SOCIETIES are not based solely on merit, but on other factors. I hope that clarifies.

In question 24 why cant option D be the answer . the answer given in the key is option A but no where in the passage is it mentioned why the philosophers spoke about scientific topics. i think it should be option D because the philosophers of that time held a prominent position in the society thus allowing them to comment on topics out of their domain.

Hi there and thank you for your question. One important thing to keep in mind is that this is NOT a factual information question. It is not asking you WHAT was said. Instead, this is asking you WHY the author mentioned something. You will have to make an inference based on the information provided. This passage, in general, is not talking about what philosophers knew or why they were important (option D) but instead focusing on ancient scientific theories held by philosophers, which makes A a better answer. I hope that clarifies a bit.
