I scored 30/30 in TOEFL Writing and I show you how you can write an introduction for Agree/Disagree questions in three steps. In the independent task of the TOEFL writing section you have to write an essay. This essay must consist of an introduction, a body paragraph and a conclusion. If you want to score high in TOEFL Writing it is important that your essay has a specific form. Regarding the introduction this means two things. First, the introduction should contain all points that are necessary to tell the reader what you are talking about in your TOEFL essay. Second, you should present them in the right way. I show you how you can write an introduction that will make you score high in the independent task in TOEFL Writing. Practice writing an introduction several times to nail your TOEFL essay! Are you ready? Let’s get into it!

HOW TO WORK WITH THIS VIDEO
1. Watch the video and make sure you understand everything.
2. Download the template. You will find a short explanation of every step and examples there.
3. Use the template as a framework for your TOEFL preparation.
FYI
The examples I use in the video and in the template are made up by me.
1) HOOK
What is a hook?
The hook is a sentence that introduces the topic of the essay and catches the reader's attention.
How do you write a hook?
First, have a look at the prompt. It tells you what your TOEFL essay will be about. Now, think about how you can rephrase this sentence and make it sound interesting. Do not copy the sentence in the prompt. If you want to score high in TOEFL Writing, you must show that you are able to express the information given in the prompt in your own words. Go through the sentence step by step. Filter out important words and find synonyms for them. After that, think about the main idea of the sentence. Now go on and write your hook: Express the idea of the prompt using your own words.
2) THESIS
What is a thesis?
The thesis is your main point, it is a direct answer to the question in the prompt. For example, in the video we talked about an Agree/Disagree question. This question asks you whether you agree or disagree with the statement. In your thesis you need to answer this question.
How do you write a thesis?
Before writing your answer, remember to start this sentence in a way which shows that you are talking about your answer to this question, that is about your opinion. For example you can start your sentence with: In my opinion,…
This usually works well with most questions. Since we are talking about an Agree/Disagree question here you can also write: I agree/disagree that…
If you totally agree/disagree with the statement and you want to emphasize that, you can write: I completely agree/disagree…
Then go on and provide an answer to the question asked.
3) TRANSITION
What is a transition?
The transition is a sentence that leads the reader from the introduction to your body paragraph. Remember what we were talking about in the video: It is a bridge. It tells the reader how many reasons you will provide in order to support your thesis.
How do you write a transition?
For instance, you can write: I think this way for two reasons which I will examine in this essay. Of course, you can also express that in another way. In fact, there are many ways to say that. Just choose whatever sentence you feel comfortable with.

@@lilianifeomaezenwa2461 I'm so sorry that this confused you! I hope everything went well nevertheless. This means that 10 of these questions were experimental questions. They sometimes add an additional passage in order to see how test-takers perform on that. It's just for their information. This passage will not count towards your score. However, you don't know which of these passages was the experimental one.

Hi Juva, I have a question for you. I followed your templates in the integrated task,, there is written in the introduction- "The article and the lecture both deal with ...." So if the article provides three examples of how to prevent nutria's spreading and the lecture disputes them, What should I write in the first sentence? "The article and the lecture both deal with nutria" or something like "The article and the lecture both deal with preventing the nutria from spreading.

I'm so glad you like it 😀. In the hook you have to state what the topic of your essay is. Whether you agree or disagree is part of your thesis, so you don't need to worry about that when writing the hook.

@juva
@juva 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Geovanna, thank you so much!! No, there was nobody correcting my essays or speaking. You're right, it's difficult to know how you're performing when you don't get any feedback. I'd recommend writing the essay and then checking it yourself: Go through it and check whether you really answered the question, whether you paraphrased, whether you repeated the same words too often. In order to check your speaking, record yourself and listen to it afterwards. Check whether your speech is fluent, whether you repeat words and so on. If you like have a look at the playlists called "Speaking" and "Writing". They can help you assessing your performance. Hope this helps :)

Thank you so much! I'm so happy you liked it! You can absolutely say it in this way. However, I'd recommend adding a bit more information. Hi Ethar, I'm so glad you like it 😀. When you write an essay, think about words you can use instead of the ones given in the prompt. Then write down these words in a document or notebook. Do this every time you write an essay. This way, you will generate a list of words that you can use in your TOEFL essay.

Hi Simo, yes, it's a must! If you want to have a high TOEFL Writing score you must show ETS that you are able to paraphrase. @juva
@juva 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Onur, you're right, your example is definitely a challenge. Let's have a look at it: I wouldn't replace the words 'universities, colleges, sports, social activities, classes, and libraries'. What I would do is use these words but rephrase the sentence in my own words. For example you could do it like this: Since sports and social activities are considered equally valuable as classes and libraries at universities and colleges, it is argued that they should be financially supported in the same way. Note that I changed 'financial support' into 'financially supported' - this way you can easily rephrase the sentence without having to use other words. Does this help? :)

Hi Juva, I love your videos so much. But may I ask a question for my problem. I had a little problem in how to state what my hook is talking about, or simply, writing hook using prompts. When the prompt is not clear enough, my vocabularies do not work well to rephrase it and I wanna be stronger in this field. For example, I received a prompt : Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Universities should give the same amount of money to their students’ sports activities as they give to their university libraries. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion. I have a little difficult here cause I dont know if the prompt is talking about the "Imbalance between sport and libraries investment" or " Inclination to libraries activities of school investment". I'm still on my way preparing my test so your help would mean to me a lot. Thank you so much.
@juva
@juva 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, I'm so glad you like the videos! Sure, I'm happy to answer your question :). That's an excellent question to practise. Have a look at it again: Does the question talk about an imbalance? No, it says nothing about that. Does it talk about about an inclination to investing in libraries? No, it doesn't do that. What the question simply asks you to do is to argue whether schools should give the same amount of money to sports activities as they give to libraries - nothing more. So it's really important that you only talk about that. Don't read something into the question that isn't there. In your hook you just need to rephrase this idea - it doesn't seem so difficult anymore, right? Hope this helps :)
