TOEFL Writing - How to Write an Independent Essay for Agree/Disagree Questions
I scored 30/30 in TOEFL Writing and I show you how to write an independent essay for agree/disagree questions in task 2. We write an independent essay that gets you a high TOEFL Writing score. I tell you tips and tricks to improve your score quickly and considerably. I will walk you through the whole process of writing an essay for task 2 of TOEFL Writing step by step. 1) Note-taking
Do not start writing your independent essay immediately. First, take notes: write down a few keywords and think about how you want to structure your TOEFL essay. This is useful for two reasons. First, you make sure that you actually answer the question given in the prompt. This is very important because you only get a high TOEFL Writing score if you answer the question directly. Second, taking notes for your independent essay in TOEFL Writing is useful because it ensures that you do not forget your reasons and examples while writing.
2) Introduction
The introduction of your independent essay must tell the examiner what your TOEFL essay is about: there must be a hook, a thesis, and a transition. Do not forget to rephrase the words given in the prompt. If you have troubles rephrasing sentences have a look at my video where I explain how to do that step by step (link above).
3) Body
In the body of your independent essay you should provide reasons and examples to support your thesis. You can do it like this: First, state your first reason. After that explain your reason. Then provide an example that supports your reason. This can be an example from your personal experience or another example. I recommend providing two reasons and two corresponding examples. If you have more time, you can also provide a third reason and example, but this is not necessary to get a high TOEFL Writing score.
4) Conclusion
In the conclusion of your independent essay you should restate your thesis and reasons. Remember to rephrase everything. It is very important that you write a strong conclusion. The conclusion is your final opportunity to convince ETS that you deserve a high TOEFL Writing score.
5) Score Boosters
For high TOEFL Writing score you must absolutely include these elements in your TOEFL independent essay:
Structure
Make sure that your essay is well-structured. Your independent essay must consist of an introduction, a body, and a conclusion.
Transitions
In the independent essay in TOEFL Writing using transitions can improve your score considerably. I used many transitions in my TOEFL essays. Transitions improve your TOEFL Writing score for three reasons. First, they show that you know a lot of vocabulary. Second, they help you write a well-structured TOEFL essay. Third, they help you increase your word count. In short, transitions are awesome because they get you a high TOEFL Writing score!
If-clauses
Use at least one if-clause in the independent essay in TOEFL Writing. If-clauses show that you are able to write more complex sentences. Consequently, this will get you a higher TOEFL Writing score. If- clauses are not easy. Therefore, you should practice them during your TOEFL preparation so that you can use them with confidence.
