Thanks for the tip mate! I am thinking of buying this lens, so will look out for one with the V.02 on a box! 👍

this video is a revelation after the day Ive had with my tokina 85mm. constantly causing my sony a7iv to freeze. I have updated the camera firmware tonight and will test thoroughly tomorrow. But after checking the lens firmware mine is version 01. , there is a firmware update for version 02. so it could well be the case that I also have to send my lens off for update which seems crazy!

Hey John, I found this while I was looking for information about my a7IV freezing when using this lens. It locks up and I need to remove the battery. So I checked the Tokina website to see if they have information and they show how to check your firmware version. I checked mine and it's already on Version 2. So, long story short, the newer firmware doesn't help those of us experiencing freezes on Sony cameras with this lens.

Hmmm I think version 2 came out before the A7IV release so perhaps it didn't account for this. I don't get any freezes on my A7III or A7RIV but I didn't before the update either. Have you done the A7IV update that was released (again) yesterday after having been withdrawn.

@@JohnJBloomfield Yeah, I've done that update. I don't think it's a very widespread issue as the lens has a huge number of positive reviews and just a small number of people reporting this specific problem. I mostly just commented in case someone found your video while searching for the issue I was having.

Might be worth dropping a message to your local tokina distributor maybe they'll do you a lens swap in case it's a production issue on certain lenses...just a thought

Thanks for info Rob, good to know. Did you try to replace it?

@@numistika I didn't. I sent an email and a facebook message to a few Tokina accounts and never heard anything back. I shoot 90% video where there's no issues so I kind of forgot about it for a while and when I remembered the issue, it was months after I bought it so I just accepted that there's an issue. I probably could have got a new copy pretty easily since I bought through Amazon but I'm pretty lazy and unorganised. Even if I knew it had this issue, I think I'd probably still buy it again. This lens, even at 1.8 is incredible. I have about 15 different lenses with a few Sony G Master and Canon L series and this is the sharpest lens I own when shot wide open. The optics are perfect. And the few times I have had issues, I've been able to fix it in a few seconds with just flicking the battery latch.

A few things to note here. - The methods of updating the firmware of Sony's 3rd party lenses are inconsistent across brands. - Sigma and Tamron lenses update exactly like 1st party Sony lenses. You update through the body, not by dropping a file onto the SD card like most other brands, but by downloading a small piece of software and connecting the camera with the lens to your PC to update the firmware. The software is made by Sony with the firmware bundled with it. - Tamron's newest lenses, however, are moving away from that by having a USB-C port on the lens, and you update the firmware by connecting the lens directly to your PC with Tamron's own proprietary software. - Samyang/Rokinon lenses need their proprietary dock to update the firmware, kind of like Sigma and Tamron lenses for Canon and Nikon. - Some Tokina lenses, including yours and the 100mm macro and possibly others, do not have a way of updating the firmware directly by customers. - I'm sorry to break the news to you but you should have gotten the Viltrox 85mm f1.8 instead of the Tokina. The Tokina is actually just a rebadged Viltrox, and the Viltrox actually has a USB port on the lens that allows you to update the firmware. On top of that, the Viltrox (and Tokina really) lens is actually physically an f1.6 lens and is limited to f1.8 by the firmware, and there's firmware hack you can do on the Viltrox to open it up to f1.6, which is obviously not possible with the Tokina because you can't update the firmware yourself.

I don't think I would have minded the sending it back to sort so much if it didn't have to be international! Having spoken to a lot of people to find out where to actually send it (still nobody responded to the official form) ! I was told twice that any subsequent updates will be done via the camera - that this update is a 'special case' Actually the Viltrox is not a rebadged tokina and the tokina is not a rebadged viltrox. But the optical design is the same it looks like they've both bought it from a third party designer then applied their own build and software to the bought in optical design. I covered this in my review of this lens and it's been covered a few times on various blogs etc. I opted for the Tokina over the viltrox off the back of the Tom Calton review of all the 85 f1.8's on Sony - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qZlja9GrzLKchHU.html Interesting that you can open it up to f1.6 but personally I wouldn't bother I'd assume there is a significant drop in IQ or why would the designers have opted to limit it? Interesting though what lenses shipping with USB ports might mean for the future. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment - appreciate you taking the time.

Indeed. The Tokina is far superior to the Viltrox.

@@JohnJBloomfield From what I read, the drop in quality is around the edges of the frame so not that big of a deal and of course you can stop it down to 1.8

@@lighthousephoto7143 The reviews are mixed. Some say the Tokina is less sharp, others say the sharpness is the same, but coatings are a lot better o Tokina, which is unsurprising. Viltrox is definitely skimping on coatings, which many people don't seem to care about but I see problems. The first one with Viltrox to me is that it seems to have worse light transmission than other lenses like 7artisans (that should be an insult). The second is that Tokina is easier to use with the more tasteful flaring and higher contrast. Colors are different too, where Viltrox seems to have a cool tone. I saw one review that concluded that there's no point in paying extra for Viltrox if you can get the 7artisans because it has a nicer look for slightly less. Anyway, there is definitely a sample variation going on.Lenses don't have absolutely perfect quality control.
